If yer gonna cut it wrong...

Cut it long

That's a big house that cut all to hail.

The lumber problem stems from the mis-communications between the guy ordering the lumber and the lead carpenter who manages the job site.

Builders are no longer lead carpenters. Most are totally ignorant of accurate material take offs. Those who think they know something just count rafters and joist then add one 2X4 per lf of wall.

Seldom is an estimate cut sheet issues to let he lead guy know where things are used for economic's sake and it's always because the moron doing the estimate just jacks up the price to cover his ignorant ###.

PS, I was a carpenter and craftsman for 30 years with a Construction Science degree from Clemson.

oh I know, my boss is always upset about it

Nov 25, 2015, 7:01 PM

But I'm thankful because I just needed a college summer job, and if they utilized their materials correctly, there wouldn't be any work for me to do!

Are you still in the business 88? I'm hoping to maybe learn from my boss right now about some more of the home-building industry.

That's about an extra 1000 dollars worth of lumber they didn't need. (Depending on the price of lumber now. Haven't worked in the lumber yard in 2 years). Worked at a hardware store over the summers to pay for my college. Had contractors who would bring whole loads back because they miscalculated. Some would tell the customer some wouldn't. We have a few contractors around here I ONLY use. Then there are some I wouldn't let build my dog a house.

after a few early bad experiences with wood framing, when presented with these opportunities now, my response is "my wood pump is broken "... steel, concrete, or masonry only for me haha

SIPs, beams and concrete... and 'simpler', smaller design...***

Can't see the whole house but if that's all of it, not bad

Nov 25, 2015, 7:58 PM

at all. Those valley cuts and gables alone would make a stack. I see a few 2x4s that could have possibly been used, but most of that pile is end cuts off of dimensional lumber that's only available in 2' lengths. If that's all, I'd say the guy did well. I've had my license for 29 years and I'm a stickler about waste... There are designs that can keep it to a few wheelbarrows. That house is not one.

It's a pretty large house, and it's a build up of the past 4 months. Hasn't even been roughed in yet though!

Built my first house in 1969,built over 400 since. I've seen many piles that big but now in Ga. we have to have a container on site, can't just pile it up in most jurisdictions.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Same here... There's a lot of random blocking material...***

yes we have to have a container too

Nov 25, 2015, 9:38 PM [ in reply to Re: Any of you guys here home builders/contractors? ]

Isn't it amazing how much trash DOESNT make it to that container??

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That's actually not that large for a house that big

Nov 26, 2015, 2:30 AM

Looks about average to me. I don't see lots of wasted long pieces, just saw-offs, stringer waste and temporary support pieces.
