A Border Tale of Mass Media Manipulation

I read a lot about the border these days given it's an election year and the media like to harp on it.

I'm middle-aged now. But all my years growing up and matriculating in Texas, immigrants were part of life. They were in many ways part of our family units. Most all of them were Mexican. Some were Latin Americans. All were really, really fine people who loved us and we loved them.

Border counties aren't geared to handle the humans, they have no tax base, no revenue, no real way to do anything about it, which is why the state gets involved.

It's why Abbott's shipping them off - he wants other places to get a taste of what it's like to have this moving, fluid, almost impossible human crisis on their hands.

(Abbott is a fine man, by the way. I've met him a couple of times and he's got one of the finest spirits I've ever encountered in a politician, and I've known a few. He isn't doing this because he's racist, or inhumane. He's communicating with Washington, sending a message.)

But please don't be manipulated by the media's coverage, which is SHALLOW at best, and flat dishonest at worst. Same goes for the talking heads and politicians.

Here's how it works: A border county judge calls Abbott and says we've got an influx that we can't handle. We need money, and we need some help.

So Abbott sends buses and maybe a few guys with guns.

The local LEOs string some razor wire to slow down the tide and the humanitarians show up to help out, pitch their tents and set up shop. Local network-owned news stations get wind of it and send a crew.

So it ends up in the network feed.

Then some network producer decides to work it into the A-block for David Muir or Lester Holt to read about.

Now it's on the evening news, and they're platforming it on social media, and all the sucker fish are working into their feeds, and because it's on the evening news and social media it MUST be a national crisis, right? So now the pols have to answer questions about it. Or seize it to make political hay with their bases.

So, if you're gonna go vote this year, vote our wallet, vote your conscience, vote your party. Whatever. But don't vote FOR Trump because he'll fix the border. He can't. Don't vote AGAINST Biden because he won't fix the border. He can't.

Build a wall if you want. But it won't stop people from coming. The border is not a red line on a map. It's a vast, untamed region that is pretty much a law unto itself.

Yes, human mobility is of course beyond what even my folks experienced down there in the 50s and 60s and 70s before they sold the land off. Pretty much, if they saw folks traipsing across our land, they knew they were migrant workers, seasonal.

Now, migration is a hemipsheric event leaving open the possibility that someone from another continent with bad intentions is heading to the border. I get it. And reasonable policies should be put into place.

But I'd submit that a kid in Beijing with a laptop and wi-fi could do more harm to "our way of life" than a battalion of wanna-be terrorists trying to figure out how to cross the big empty with just a gallon of water and a compass.

IF you read this far, thank you for your consideration. I hope it's received in the same spirit of reason in which it is given.

Noooo - the "news" media wouldn't do anything like that.

The media is your friend. And it is always right.

And the semi-hilarious (but pitiful) take I often hear from family members is that the media cannot be trusted while they're streaming FOX or CNN 24/7.

"I'm Tucker Carlson, who lied openly to your faces about Dominion, telling you you can't trust media, but you CAN TRUST ME."

It's beyond absurd.

Another absolutely hilarious (and also pitiful) take I often hear is "Yeah, we know Trump's kinda gross, but, he's the best bet we have against the corrupt deep state."

And yet when I ask what's the "deep state," they go blank. They don't even know what they're afraid of. They just know Trump's the only one who can fix it, even though they openly admit Trump's kinda gross.

I'd reply "Yeah, I know. He's kinda gross, but he makes the trains run on time!" if I thought they'd get the reference.

I'm a conservative, and have been entirely orphaned by the party that claims me as a voter.

I agree with much of what you said. I don't really use the term, but my definition of the 'deep state' would be something like the NSA spying on its citizens.

I don't think the "No Such Agency" sees us as its citizens.

The NSA is a group of citizens, themselves, who've taken a pretty serious oath, and will do just about anything they have to in fulfilling that oath.

I'd agree that FISA courts became something of a mockery post-911, and I believe they've helped agencies use big-data sweeps that have invaded my privacy on a regular basis for 20 years.

But then again, so have the marketing companies who spam my butt with emails because one of my vendors sold my address to them.

Big Data is big business, and we're all dependent upon it.

Which is why I often have to remind myself that the words "right to privacy" don't show up in the Constitution.

Anybody who compares Trump to Mussolini is only proving how little they know about history or even what's happening today. Nice posts troll.

But I earned it 30 years ago and may have lost a step or two. It's been a mostly useless degree in the marketplace, but the mental disciplines have come in handy.

My thesis was on Mussolini's use of "fasci di combattimento" as a grassroots paramilitary force that eventually led to the successful march on Rome, and the parallels with Hitler's unsuccessful Beer Hall Putsch. There are some other ideas in there around the roots of fascism in post-WW1 Europe, but that was the gist of the thing.

It wasn't particularly earth-shattering.

And what I will say is that Mussolini doesn't really resemble Trump. He was far less capable than Trump.

But Italy of the pre-Mussolini years does in many ways resemble America. There was a vast, angry middle worried about the rise of socialism and the loss of their national identity, in search of someone to save them.

So when you read "He makes the trains run on time," you're interpreting it poorly. I'm talking about people like you and me. Not Trump.

We share a 2,000 mile frontier with a culture that births two humans for every one that dies, and the two humans who are born, are born into poverty and systemic corruption.

But yeah, Trump will secure the border. He's crafty like that.

so the manipulating part is easy.

I think some people believe that it is like controlling how much water comes through a ###. Like it is that simple of a problem to solve, like there is some kinda mechanism that can be turned on and off, lol.

The electoral politics of illegal immigration should be called "Getting the Rube Vote".

My one and only encounter with border patrol went like this:

I went down to the river (Rio Grande) to pee. No kidding, I was driving through Hudspeth County and there's nothin' but nothin' in Hudspeth County.

Too much coffee. No gas stations. Just me, my truck, and my bladder.

Pulled off to find a good spot to take a break. Went through a space in the Trump wall.

Did my business, got back in my truck, drove back down the dirt road and onto the black top, where I was met by three border patrol SUVs with lights on.

"Sir, you pulled under a tree there by the river. We need to get a look in your truck."

I'd been under the watchful eye of a drone I neither heard nor saw.

That's what it takes to "secure" the border. Not a dern wall.

Exactly...doing their job and not spending time processing illegal immigrants.***

The open borders thing really gets people riled up. The fear of unknowns flooding across the border even though many who are afraid of it never see it in their daily lives.

The propaganda for it has been so effective that it’s gone beyond the USA. I ran into an English guy on a soccer discussion board who was all passionate about America’s “open borders” as he sat in Yorkshire.

It doesn’t help that Elon Musk has decided to go all in on that propaganda as well, rarely ever tweeting about Tesla or tech anymore and instead parrots outright lies about illegal inmigrants voting.

I wonder why nobody asks or wonders what his motivation is for suddenly going full throttle with the illegal immigration stuff.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That's the thing ...

the borders aren't "open." People use that word to imply it's just one happy, friendly, hospitable zone where folks just stroll on over to San Antonio, or Houston or Austin or Dallas.

But anyone who's ever been to South Texas or West Texas knows there's nothing friendly or hospitable about that country. Just driving across it can be a lonely feeling, never mind trying to sneak across it in a pair of old Nikes with a gallon or two of water.

It's why so many folks *WANT* to get caught in the homeland security net at the designated checkpoints. They know their best bet is to get processed into the system, not circumvent it.

It's just Ellis Island set to a western vibe.

"Open" and "secure" are dumb-down words intelligent news writers (and they are smart, believe me) use to keep up the fear-inform-empower cycle.

Scare em. (The hordes are coming for your way of life).
"Inform" em. (Tell 'em how the hordes are coming for your way of life and who can fix it.)
"Empower" em. (Give 'em some good language to use around it so they can talk to their friends.)

It's that dopamine rush, and we all love that dopamine rush.

Nevermind the fact that about a billion people live just on the other side of it, and can walk to it without getting their feet wet.

No, I think our border situation is a little more complex than the "grow-up and secure it" solution you've set forth.

You wrote a well-thought out, intelligent post, and it was met with the usual mouth-breathing simpleton hostility. You have to remember, many of these folks won’t be satisfied until there are gun turrets and open fire at the border, and they welcome America turning into that past Italy you described.
