Swinney talks stomach virus effect on Clemson football

by - Staff Writer -

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney talked postgame Saturday night about a stomach bug that he said affected upwards of 15 players.

On his radio show Monday night, Swinney went into more detail on the ordeal before the 47-21 win at Louisville, which he said even affected starting quarterback Kelly Bryant by the fourth quarter.

“It was the dadgum-est thing. It was crazy,” Swinney said. “I think we had at least 20-plus people – coaches, secretaries, you name it. It wasn’t a long (sickness), but you were hugging the toilet quick. We had one coach coughing up a lung at halftime.

“Robbie Caldwell got sick. Mitch Hyatt had to come out and puke during the game. It was crazy. It has just about run its course. We had a guy dealing with it today. For the most part, I think it’s about through us.

“I’m really proud of our team. We had a lot of guys miss practice last week and had to quarantine some guys at the hotel. We had to keep some guys in their room. We had a lot of guys walking around with masks on so they didn’t catch something. There’s been some bug going around, but hopefully we’ve got that behind us.”
