What I Want To See
What I Want To See
I know we had the list of questions from yesterday’s blog but I purposely allowed for only three days of those questions a week. This allows us one day for the e-mail bag for Friday and one other day were can go over anything that arises that day.
On this morning’s radio show we had one of those topics. I made the statement that to me this season is not just about wins and losses. Don’t get me wrong, I want to win and win championships every year. But I am more interested in seeing four things in the first full year of Dabo Swinney’s tenure.
I said on today’s show that I am not sure if there is ten points difference between Clemson and ten of the teams on the schedule. I do think the Tigers should be heavy favorites against Middle Tennessee and Coastal Carolina but the other ten are a different story. There is not a team on the schedule the Tigers could not beat if they played well. But ten schools also have the talent to beat the Tigers if they play well and the Tigers do not.
Therefore, I am going into the 2009 season with no expectations for wins and losses. Instead, there are only four things I need to see this season. The four things I want to see are some of the things missing in the past few seasons in Tigertown.
Unity Every Week
We spend a lot of time talking about intangibles and some of those mean more than others. But this season I want to see a unified team that stays unified every week.
The football season is long and it will bring about adversity in different ways. Last year when adversity struck we saw a team crumble. The quarterback never took blame and pointed fingers at his offensive line and his coach. A 7-6 season was disappointing but watching a senior leader throw his teammates under the bus was painful.
This season I don’t want excuses. I want loyalty to each other. I want to see a team that will fight FOR each other and not WITH each other.
Toughness
I have beaten this drum for the past three seasons. This program lacked physical and mental toughness. I want to see offensive linemen in a three-point stance that blows people off of the ball. I want to see an offensive line that can impose their will upon the other team. I want to see an offense that could tell the other team when they we’re going to run the ball and the defense still could not stop them.
The last couple of football seasons have been hard to watch because tough defenses beat Clemson up physically. The Tigers had no chance running the football against Virginia Tech, Alabama and Nebraska in the last few seasons because the opponent was often times tougher.
Fundamentally Sound Football Team
How many times in recent years have we seen the Tigers have a bone-headed play at the wrong time? Maybe it looked something like this…..The opponent has it third and 15 and throws an eight yard out that would have been well short of the first down sticks but a Tiger defender commits pass interference and gives a cheap first down.
Roughing the punter or late hits ring a bell? How about the about the “not enough men on the line of scrimmage” penalties?
I want to see smart football. I don’t need to see the quarterback slide a yard short of the first down. I don’t need to see the quarterback take a sack instead of throwing the ball away. How many times have we seen the quarterback run out of bounds three yards behind the line instead of simply throwing the ball out of bounds?
Smart, fundamentally sound football teams would have played for a conference title over the past five or six seasons.
Aggressive Defense
One thing that drove me crazy in the last few seasons has been the lack of aggression in the defensive game plans.
Sure Clemson has had some defenses that ranked fairly high statistically but stats don’t tell the entire story. This defense has not been aggressive in years. Last season the Tigers did not force the issue. They did not impose their will upon the offense. The defense did not control the tempo or set the tone.
Last season the Tigers had 14 sacks in 13 games. They forced few turnovers and did not win the field position battle. I can remember very few games where the Tigers have actually won close, low scoring field position battles in the past few seasons.
Too often we talk about the glory days of Clemson football but when you haven’t won a conference title in this many years, we are forced to do so. In the glory years, Clemson’s defense controlled the game. They forced their will upon the opponent.
In summary, I could try and sell you on the idea that I only care about these four things and wins and losses don’t matter. However, we know that is not the case. But I firmly believe this year is a lot like the past few seasons where talent is not the issue. If Clemson does these four things in 2009, the wins will take care of themselves and championships will follow. Remember it has not been a lack of talent that has caused a void in the championships department.
Give me a unified team that is physical, fundamentally sound and aggressive on defense and I will show you a title. Just ask Virginia Tech.

My favorite bonehead play - Throwing a pass 20 yards out of bounds on a fourth down from mid-field with just a few seconds until halftime instead of giving the "Hail Mary" a chance .

I'm not sure why we can't expect Dabo to win this year? These are, more or less, his players. I don't see the defense or offense making a major change, such as Michigan or even GT did, that would require a few years to get "the right" players in place (although GT didn't need that few year period). I expect 9+ wins just like I do every year. Dabo is not new here, its not like bringing in someone that needs a few years to build a program. Dabo is taking over a program that he helped build and has been asked to take it to the next level. Seven wins is not an option. Eight wins is almost too few to stomach. I agree that there are teems on the schedule with talent, but we're Clemson, we should beat Maryland, Virgina and Wake every single year! We play in a wonderful facility, best in the ACC, and we should expect to win every game that we play there. The expectations need to be high for Dabo, or we'll end up just like we did with his mentor.

It is hard to imagine we had so few sacks with such great talent at defensive end last year. Also, the bend but not break defense is har dto watch, and often takes the fans out of the game if it is a home game. For better or worse, fans do not cheer as loud on third down when their team has just given up three third and long conversions, which happened way too often under Koening.

I agree Micky, I want to see all of the above, and the new uniforms, if there even are any "mysterious" new uniforms.

and so it begins, the wins and losses dont matter. bullspit! everyone should have a goal now not the same subjective crap that let us wallow in mediocrity for 10 years. if it is 1 win you expect, say it not some B.S intagible goal that allows you to sit on the fence all year. small wonder why you started saying "oh phil steele having us in the ACC championship is no big deal" this morning cos "it doesn't matter once you start playing". if it doesnt matter why did you read his magazine? did it scare you that objectively clemson should win its half on the ACC?

your blogs are so awesome and influential, you should put out AT LEAST 3 per day.

Mick - Long time listener, second time commenter..
I think if we do all the things you stated above, we should have a successful season.
If this team can come together, they'll set themselves up nicely for a ticker take parade through downtown Clemson!
I'll hang up and listen.

All those things would be nice, but the fact is I would like more wins, regardless of how they come.
If we are 12-0 with a soft zone defense and an OL that gets 2 yards per carry, that will be still be OK.
I doubt it would happen, but the point is - does it matter HOW you win games as long as you win them?
Posted by Zeus on July 07, 2009 at 01:24 PM EDT #
I think the point is that those things will lead to more wins.

Mickey,
I agree that these are the ingredients of championships. I want them. I expect them. And, I expect us to win 10 games.
The bonehead plays are a lack of preparation. But you can prep a kid into throwing it away too soon as in against Miami when Charlie had been drilled on "don't get sacked" and " if they come, throw it away". Oops, the defender fell down and if he holds it 1/2 second longer, he sees it and Clemson wins. Good coaches find ways to get kids in the right frame of mind.
As far as uni's, Cl...830, remove the names and all orange is earned. Nothing else.
otisman, find something more to your liking to read. It's a simple solution to your obvious discontent.

If the above happens WE WILL play for the ACC Championship in Dec.

I certainly want to see more toughness, but what I want to see more is a team that plays smart.
We have at times looked like the most clueless dolts in college football. Dumb penalties, which often aren't just 5 yd losses but take td's away, dumb strategy, poor clock management, etc.
If we only play smarter without changing anything else, we will win more games. This is also the true test of coaching.

Smplman,
Just ignore Otisman. The internet terrorist does this attention. I met Chris (Otisman) once at the bowl game in Atlanta and believe me this little computer geek is not worth it. If I said day, he would say night for the attention.

I don't want to see wasted times-out because the play-clock is at 1, like that disgraceful 1st play vs. Nebraska.
I want to see an aggressive D with more man-coverage from 2 of the top CBs in the ACC. As Chris Ard said, Koennig consistently generated Top 20 defenses...
...with Top 10 personnel.
I want to see Napier keep the D honest by bombing it, and by using the tight-ends in the passing game-- even if Ford & Spiller are bigger home-run threats.
I don't want to see a predictable offense that is "built around Spiller" that lets defenses key on him. I want to see diversity that lets CJ be CJ.
With 3 talented, dual-threat QBs, I want to see the QB run, and some option. Is it a hand-off to Harper, a pitch to Ellington, a QB run, or a pass to Ford/Spiller? Ha! Defend THAT!
I want to see a QB scramble past the chains.
I want to see us ALWAYS beat the teams that we should.
And I want to see undefeated Tigers win the national championship. 14-0.

No but you do hang out on the computer all day and you are about 5-2 and weigh a buck forty. I could have said pencil neck geek. Is that better chris?

I took a buck fifty out of my car yesterday so I could buy a candy bar at the hotel. I bought a Twix. It only cost a buck. I still have fifty cents left. If I can find fifty cents tomorrow, I'll be able to get another one.
