We Belong

We Belong
I wrote a blog last year about how painful it was to be a Clemson fan at the ACC tournament for many years. I said there were many years where we just did not feel like we belonged in Greensboro, Landover or wherever the tournaments were. I said it was kind of like when you go into a rich person’s house and have to use the restroom and you are not really sure if that fancy soap is used to clean your hands or is it there for decoration? Do you really use those fancy towels to dry your hands or are they just there for looks?

Those days are over though. We are moving on up like George and Weezie. We were never embarrassed but now we stand a little taller walking into the coliseum.

In the old days we used to have to fight off the Tar Heel and Blue Devils fans who wait outside the doors of the coliseum wanting our tickets after we lost in the first round. They were like crocodiles sizing up the weak members of the heard trying to cross the river.

We used to pack for only one day. Heck, we did not even need to make hotel reservations but those days are gone under Oliver Purnell.

Clemson is 15-56 in the ACC tournament and have had some very difficult stretches. It took Clemson nine years to win its first ACC tournament game. The Tigers lost 21 of their first 24 ACC games. They lost in the first round in 22 of the first 24 ACC tournaments.

There were other bad times. The Tigers lost 11 straight games from 1964-1975 and lost 10 straight games from 1980 through 1989.

But the Tigers have had three decent stretches in the tournament. Clemson won three out of five games from 1962-64. In 1962 the Tigers were the sixth seed but upset third seeded NC State 67-46 behind 15 points from Jim Brennan and Tommy Mahaffey. The next night the Tigers upset second seeded Duke 77-72 in a game where Brennan scored 34 points. The Tigers lost to Wake Forest in the ACC finals 77-66.

When Clemson lost to the Demon Deacons in the finals in 1962, little did we know that it would take 46 years to get back to the finals.

The Tigers also had a good stretch in the tournament from 1975-77. During one stretch in the days of Skip Wise, Tree Rollins, Stan Rome and company the Tigers won three out of five games. Three consecutive years Clemson won first round games only to fall in the semis each year.

In 1975 in Greensboro, Clemson entered the tournament as the three seed and beat sixth seeded Duke 78-76 behind 20 points from Wayne Croft. In the semi-finals the Tigers fell to Phil Ford and the second seeded Tar Heels in overtime 76-71. That was the first ACC tournament game I remembered watching.

In 1976 in Landover, MD, the Tigers were the fourth seed and beat fifth seed Wake Forest 76-73 with Stan Rome scoring 20. The following night Clemson once again missed out on the finals when they fell to top seed North Carolina 82-74.

The tournament moved back to Greensboro in 1977 and once again Clemson was favored in the first round when the third seeded Tigers beat the sixth seeded Duke Blue Devils 82-74. Once again it was Rome who led the Tigers with 19 points. In Tree Rollins final game of his Clemson career, the Tigers fell in the ACC semi-finals 72-60 to Virginia.

The 1980 squad also made it to the semi-finals when Billy Williams and Larry Nance led the Tigers to a 57-49 win in the first round over Virginia. Maryland’s Albert King scored 38 in leading the top-ranked Terps to a 91-85 win over the Tigers to end another shot at the finals.

Clemson had some success with from 1990 until Oliver Purnell arrived with six wins over those 15 years but some of those were play-in games. It still brings a smile to the faces of many of us when we reminisce abou Greg Buckner’s dunk to beat 75-73 in Greensboro in 1996.

Perhaps the best memory for Clemson fans was the 2008 tournament in Charlotte. The Tigers opened up with an 82-48 thumping of Boston College in the first round. Maybe the best win in the program’s history was the following afternoon when Trevor Booker had 18 against the second seed Duke 78-74. The Tigers’ second ACC final appearance ended with an 86-81 loss to top seeded North Carolina. It was the closest we have ever come to cutting down the nets in the ACC tournament.

However Coach Purnell has brought a new sense of optimism throughout the basketball program and that means a renewed hope in the ACC tournament as well.

This year Clemson has a chance to win the title but I am not counting on it. I am counting on those that are going to the tournament to take a picture of something that has not happened many times in my lifetime. If Clemson wins tonight and North Carolina loses, I want a picture of Clemson fans asking Tar Heel fans for their tickets for tomorrow’s games.

Maybe the Tar Heel fans are wondering if they can use the fancy towels in our bathroom this year.

So tonight Clemson is not in the play-in game. They are not even playing to get into the NCAA tournament. Instead Clemson enters this year’s ACC tournament with two goals in mind. First is the chance to win the ACC tournament. Clemson is not the favorite but I don’t think it is outside the realm of possibility to think the Tigers can win it all in Greensboro. Also, the Tigers are playing to improve their seeds for the NCAA tournament.

We may not win it again this year but at least now we feel like we belong.

Comments:

I know this is going to anger everybody on here, but I dont see why so many people think OP walks on water. A 6th place finish in the ACC this year and last. Lost last year in the first round of ACC tourney to the 11th seed. Another first round loss in the NCAA tourney as a big favorite. I know they got to 20 wins for 4 straight years, first time ever in Clemson history, but when you play 13 cupcakes in preseason, 20 wins isnt so daunting. OP is one heck of a classy guy, but he's average at coaching. There's a reason why he's NEVER won an NCAA tourney game. X's and O's, something he's desperately lacking in.

Hope you are correct, Mickey. We need to win the 1st one to talk about the next opponent in Greensboro. I am not at all confident that we have earned the stripes of a force at ACC Tourney,
as yet.
Go TIGERS! Beat the Wolfpack!

Well DV,

You start extreme with the watering on water comment but OP has done a lot of things that have never...ever...been done at Clemson before.

You claim that the 20 wins over the last 4 years isn’t a legitimate accomplishment because of our schedule. But, our schedule hasn’t just recently gotten easier. Still, no one else has done that at Clemson.

I've seen steady improvement, quality student players on and off the court, and a team scheme that gets a lot out of the potential.

Yeah, I want to see a run in the ACC and NCAA tourneys. I think we will. I'm willing to support a coach that shows that kind of continuous improvement on the court and that kind of passion for Clemson and his players off the court.

Not angry with you. Just feel good about my Tiger basketball team and their coach. Can't wait for tonight, this weekend, next week.

I think DV_1981 is a coot because he/she rarely ever has anything positive to say about any of our teams.

We play the 11 seed the night before the Tourney starts...sounds like a play-in game to me!

CM Shack, your comment is stupid. The ACC Tournament starts today, not tomorrow. Finishing in the top half of the ACC (again) and narrowly missing a first round bye is a far cry from the play-in game days of the late 90s and early 00s.

Next.

DV: I guess the fact OP has won EVERYWHERE he has coached means nothing?? Since you are so enlighted to know X's and O's, why don't you take a poll from every coach in the conference and ask them to rate the top five coaches in the league (and this is an exceptional league). I will bet you a year's salary OP makes it on 10+ ballots.
Your constant negativity is annoying and unjustified.

DV: I haven't heard anyone (including Mickey) say that OP walks on water. I hear people (including Mickey in this blog) saying that OP has brought Clemson basketball to respectability. (No longer a doormat.) You say that OP is an average coach because Clemson has been finishing as an average ACC team. But considering Clemson's historical status, that indicates to me that he's well above average. Prior to Purnell's arrival, Clemson had 6-straight losing seasons in the ACC. Since 1979, and prior to Purnell, Clemson only had 4 winning seasons in the ACC. Purnell just brought Clemson 3 more in the last 3 years. He's probably not the best coach out there, but I suspect we'd be awfully sorry if he left.

Judge...We FINISHED 6th in a 12 team conference(a down year for the ACC btw)-spare me the top half crap. I think it is moronic to write a blog about how NOW we belong when we are playing the 11 seed on THURSDAY for 2 years running. That is Kool-Aid talk.

Posted by CM Shack on March 11, 2010 at 02:01 PM EST #

CM Shack, I won't spare you the "top half crap," because doing so would prevent you from understanding the FACT that we are nowhere close to our days as an annual play-in game participant.

We are the sixth seed in this year's tournament (although we finished tied for fifth in the standings). Due to the competitiveness of the conference we were literally within a few baskets in the Wake game of finishing third. If we had the 3 next to our name instead of the 6, would you consider us a far superior team? Would you feel better about the year? You shouldn't, because we are essentially the same team.

This team has overcome a lot. Stitt's injury hurt us a lot, and certainly cost us several losses we probably wouldn't have had. That, plus the unexpected departure of Oglesby in the offseason, and we STILL finished with a winning ACC record, 20 wins overall, and a are a lock for the NCAA Tournament yet again. Excellent work.

3-7 under OP!

Posted by you on March 12, 2010 at 04:58 AM EST #

Enough of the kool-aid talk. Win one game in the ACC tournament and we show some incremental improvement. Until then, we haven't arrived. The season is preparation. The patient died prematurely. Again. The expectation has to be real and accomplished at some point in time. We are not there yet. Embarrassed again. Painful again. But still a Tiger.

You say we belong in the ACC Tournament. No we don't,not when you have now been eliminated in the first round 4 of the last 5 years, and Clemson under OP is 3-7 in tournament play.At some point you got to step up and show you belong!
