The Bad Loss

The Bad Loss
We were all hoping that the Florida State game would have been the bad loss of the year that every team has. We were wrong.

Sunday effort in Charlottesville was just pathetic. The defense stunk. The effort was poor. The turnovers were inexcusable. The loss was simply unthinkable.

Sunday Clemson got beat by a bad basketball team. There is no shame in losing to talented teams but that was not the case Sunday. Virginia has offered little resistance to the rest of the league.

These numbers tell the story:
*Clemson’s 21 turnovers were the most of any ACC game for the Tigers this season.

*9-26 three pointers looked an awful lot like many of Clemson’s trips to Charlottesville.

*The Cavs outscored Clemson in the paint 48-32.

*When you have 48 points in the paint, you probably have a high field goal percentage. Sunday the Cavaliers shot 53% from the field. Remember, UVA came into the game with the lowest field goal percentage in the ACC.

*Sammy Zeglinski looked like Jeff Lamp Sunday. He was 6-6 from the field including 3-3 from behind the arch. His 15 points were a huge pick up to a struggling offense.

*Mike Scott looked like Ralph Sampson with 18 points and 10 rebounds.

*Who is Jamil Tucker? He was the guy who had 11 points and four rebounds.

*Virginia’s bench outscored the Tigers bench 46-12.

Sure Clemson could have stolen that win with a put back from Rivers or Booker late and it would have changed the record and the standings. However, it would have changed what we think about the effort. The Tigers looked like they paid Virginia little respect.

For the second time in the past eight days, the Tigers have to now go back and play the what if game. Had Clemson just held on to the huge lead against FSU and just taken care of an inferior team in Virginia, the Tigers would have been tied for the lead in the ACC and would have a two game lead in the loss column with Duke, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest. Eight days later and Clemson two losses back to North Carolina and tied in the loss column with Duke, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest and Florida State.

This is still a season full of promise but Sunday took a mulligan away from the Tigers. No more slip ups now. There is no more room for error. Clemson can ill-afford another pathetic effort.

This team probably cannot catch North Carolina in the regular season but it can still finish second in the league. It can still grab one of the top four spots in the regular season and gain a bye in the first round of the ACC tournament.

If Clemson is to play to its full potential for the final six regular season games, the ACC tournament and the NCAA tournament some of the following things must happen:
*The half court defense must improve. It starts with energy but it also includes better fundamentals.

*Obviously the offense has to go through Trevor Booker and his inside presence. However, other must step up.

*The Tigers must get better point guard play. Stitt is not a great shooter but he must be more aggressive and more productive with his penetration. He also has to stay out of foul trouble.

*The bench has to be more productive. Too often Jerai Grant gets in foul trouble. Potter’s confidence seems to come and go.

*The Tigers must play more consistently. Few times this season have we seen Clemson play two solid halves of basketball. We have seen one brilliant half several times but seldom have we seen two good halves or 40 consistent minutes of play.

Outside of the Tar Heels, the rest of the ACC went through the same thing Clemson went through last week. Duke lost twice. Wake got upset by NC State. Florida State lost to Wake Forest. Virginia Tech lost to Maryland. Boston College lost to Clemson.

North Carolina has won nine in a row but the next longest winning streak belongs to Maryland and NC State who have won two in a row.

With three weeks remaining on the ACC regular season, who knows how seeds 2-12 will shake out.

A Reminder
I wanted to remind everyone of a big event for me personally this weekend. I have the pleasure of being asked to give our testimonial this Saturday. I am honored to be the speaker at the First Baptist Church of Mauldin Men’s Ministry Weekend. The program is entitled, “Life Lessons - My amazement at what I have learned from a 16-year old.” It centers around what Ryan’s accident and taught us and I am extremely excited about the message. The event is Saturday, February 21st from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm. There is a steak dinner in Fellowship Hall starting at 6:00 pm. Tickets for the event are just $10 for adults & $5 for children under 12. To attend you need tickets in advance. For tickets, please contact FBC Mauldin at 864-288-7835 and ask for Paula Sloan. Ryan and I can’t wait to see you there so please call Paula in advance and thanks for your consideration.

Comments:

Is it just me or does anyone else think that Stitt is simply not improving? He's starting to remind me a little of Potter in that regard.
It also seems like we could'nt slow down a lady in a wheelchair with some of our picks.
UVA was pumped up for this game. It made their season but hopefully we won't let it define ours. If we can hold court at home and win one more road game, we'll finish 10-6 and hopefully get a 1st round bye in the conf tourny.

Potter can turn the ball over 5 times and OP won't take him out. Sykes looked like a bull in a china shop, all out of balance. Booker looked like he was asleep. TO tried to overcompensate for the entire lousy bunch. It was a disgrace. Rivers "This stuff happens" is a pitiful excuse. Where is the pride? Where is the work ethic?

Sunday's game showed the vulnerability we have when our role players don't step up. When they play good, things open up for KC, Terrance & Book. We're just average if Grant, Sykes, Potter & Stitt don't play good. This game plus the Fla. St. game also exposed the weakness in not having a true "5" on our team. Both Fl. St. and UVA have 7-footers who play - and they alter shots and take up space in the lane. Booker, Sykes & Grant are all "4's". We don't have a true "5". Some teams will abuse our weakness there.

I was surprised at the end of the OT that we did not have a set play for KC to catch and shoot. Terrance just took the inbounds pass and dribbled around and took a bad shot. Why did we not set up a double screen for KC to catch and shoot? Don't you want your senior involved in the final play?

I kind of expected the true letdown game at some point. Most good teams have had them. Maybe this will help them more in the long run. In the ACC you can't win by showing up. You have got to bring your A game every time.

So sick of the woulda / coulda game. First football and now basketball.

Forget history - this is here and now. We blow a 19 point lead with 14:45 left to play and we look terrible and unmotivated against a bad virginia team.

History has nothing to do with these 2 things. Instead of tied for first and 2 games ahead of third, we are mired in trying to get a bye.

History is not involved in this. And people on the mane bored wanna get to the tourney.

IT DOESN'T GET ANY BIGGER THAN THE fsu OR uvula GAME ! ! ! ! And we stunk the joint up.

something seems wrong. we cannot seem to get Booker involved enough. It seems to me that when Rivers penetrates the paint he is the best option for getting things started but too often we are leting Stitt dribble around at the top of the key and nothing develops. When we were having success earlier in the yr in getting Booker involved I ahve noticed that Rivers was the key in gettig inside penetration. And even though we are inproved at the line, KC missed then first one that would have not allowed them to set up with penetration to tie the game. they would have had to force a 3 to tie. Our last two losses have me back to thinking we would not be able to beat Miami and Illinois on the road if we were to play them now, both t eams have improved and we semm to be getting figured out. pack the middle and suffocate TO and we cant get going.

GoodFella - Stitt has had his difficulties this year (most of which are mental if you ask me) but he has penetrated better these last few games and attacked the rim hard. He was fouled on a few drives against UVA but none were called. He has the skills to be a really good player, and I think he will come around.

dtnickles - Potter frustrates me at times on offense too, but he is arguably our best perimeter defender. He is invaluable in that regard, and that likely gets him a "pass" from OP.

EGTiger83 - I totally agree with you about the last play of the game. We were down 3, and a quick two and then a foul would have been fine if a good look at a three wasn't available. We should've had a better play for that situation, or executed the play better. I don't know who to blame there (players or coaches) but it was horrible!

Too often Virginia players drove to the rim with minimal resistance!

As bad as we played in the game, we had a good chance for victory at the end of the game... We just couldn't get the shot or two tips to fall, but I think Clemson has a very good Coach and a Team that didn't play very good in spots... PS Can anyone explain why duke is rated # 9...
