Super Tuesday; Korn; Gamecocks and Tigers

Super Tuesday
I used to really get into politics but have soured on the subject. My old age leads me to be more cynical. However, I am still amazed that in presidential politics a candidate can be so far behind in the national polls but do well in two small states like Iowa and New Hampshire almost a year in advance and go on to win the nomination. Your campaign can be a disaster but if you win one of those two small states then all of the sudden you get the momentum and the media jumps on your bandwagon. I am also amazed that one day, Super Tuesday, basically can decide the race.

I really equate Clemson’s search for its next football coach to presidential primary season. It seems to me that as of this moment you have your Dabo supporters, your Muschamp supporters, your Bud Foster people, your Venables supporters, etc.

I read all of the post on Tigernet, Tiger Illustrated and CU Tigers and I see a split Tiger Nation. There are those that say Clemson cannot win with this guy and my guy is the only real choice. Others try to convince you why their theory is correct.

Some will say that head coaching experience is a must. There is an ongoing debate about offensive minds compared to defensive minds. Some compare the candidates to former Clemson coaches and current head coaches across the country.

Like the political candidates, the supporters of coaching candidates have tried to lay out their case for their choice with campaign promises. “My guy will bring toughness to the job. My guy will energize the Clemson people and is considered a terrific recruiter. My guy is the one that can unify Clemson Nation.”

I may be wrong but I think Clemson fans want to be unified. I feel they are tired of the division. Tiger fans may have their separate opinions for the next three weeks but like presidential politics, I think the next head coach at Clemson will have support from most of the Clemson people the day he takes the job.

Dabo’s Major Obstacle
Speaking of politics, I think Dabo’s main obstacle is similar to what John McCain faced. McCain was doomed from the start because Obama was able to tie him to the previous administration. Bush’s approval ratings were so low that any Republican candidate would have had a difficult time winning. People wanted change. Some critics will claim that Dabo is still too closely tied to the Bowden administration. His big concern is making sure that he can separate himself enough from some of the old regime. People wanted change in Washington and many Tiger fans felt the same way. Dabo has to convince his players and some fans that he is not more of the same. I think he has done that and this is less of a concern with me than it is with others.

Korn
I saw Willy Korn struggle throwing the ball into the wind on Saturday in warm-ups and in the game but unlike others I am not concerned. Last Tuesday I had a chance to ask Korn about his shoulder and he said it was fine. However, I knew from his face that that was not the case. It is obvious to me that he has been injured and I am not sure why Clemson has been so reluctant to talk about it.

Look, I saw Korn as a freshman in high school and he had more arm strength than he does now. As a sophomore he had a cannon and his ball had more zip than it does now. So no one could convince me that he does not have a strong arm. He might not today, but that is because of an injury.

I have this policy on my radio show that it is not fair to judge an athlete who is injured. We should probably give them credit for playing through the injury instead of questioning their talents. Give them credit for their guts instead of judging their athletic ability.

Korn is a special talent who has incredible leadership skills. Maybe Kyle Parker can beat Korn out in the spring but it would not be fair to either if we based that if either one was injured.

On Monday, Billy Napier talked about Korn’s shoulder for the first time and admitted injury was the major concern. I have learned a little about the shoulder and how complicated the shoulder joint is and I have a better understanding of the issues after some research. Maybe Korn cannot return to 100% in time but at this is not the time to pass judgment on his abilities.

The Differences in USC and Clemson
I have noticed two major differences in USC fans and Clemson fans. Gamecock fans get over losses faster than Clemson fans. USC lost to Florida by 50 on Saturday and their fans can put it behind them like it never happened. Spurrier came out Sunday and said USC just needs to forget about Saturday and move on to the Clemson game. Meanwhile, Clemson fans still are not over the season opening loss to Alabama and that was in August.

The other major difference is the criticism of the coach. When Bowden or Swinney lost football games then the critics come out. Everything is questioned. However when South Carolina loses a football game then no one ever questions Steve Spurrier. It is sacrilegious to utter any questions about the head man in Columbia. This was pretty much the case for Lou Holtz as well.

Maybe my theories are biased but I observe two different viewpoints from two different sets of fans across our state.

Comments:

Fans questioned Tommy because he was not a PROVEN coach the same way that Spurrier and Holtz are. If Pete Carrol is our next head coach I will not question anything he says, EVER. Notice the difference in quality of coaches?

Mickey, Are you SERIOUS? You REALLY don't understand (a) why Clemson fans bash coaches over a loss while Carolina fans don't, and (b) why we don't get over a loss as quickly? (A) It's because Spurrier and Holtz earned that right. No one at Clemson in our lifetime (maybe Ford) has earned that right. And in fairness, we can't assume that Clemson fans would treat these legends any differently than Carolina fans treat them. I'd never suggest Clemson fans wouldn't treat the likes of Holtz and Spurrier with the respect they've earned. To do so is an offense to Tiger Nation! I think both sets of fans are just giving what their coaches have earned.

(B) as for the "getting over it," it's because we have higher levels of expectations than SC because we've been to the top and anything less hurts us more than it hurts them.

I love your columns, but honestly, I'm sometimes surprised at what you waste your time writing about.

McCain tried to follow Bush, who has this country in one of the worst shapes it has been in for quite some time.

Dabo wants to follow Bowden, who had the Tigers in one of the best shapes it has been in since 1990.

Anyway...I think Dabo and Foster are better than Dabo by himself. There is no way that Dabo could get a DC as good as Foster.

Thought it was a very accurate assesment of the situation at clemson.I do enjoy reading your collumns but I really think Dabo should get the job. hopefully he will rearrange some of the coaching staff with a new coach or two. GO DABO AN GO CLEMSON

Spurrier is a shell of his old-self and any fan (Clemson or USC) that would not question ANY coach after a loss like that is gulping the cool-aid!!

If we were to win the next 2 games, then maybe Dabo should be given the job, but with the caveat that everybody goes with the except Napier.

Mickey, et al,

Can we PLEASE lose the phrase "Tiger Nation" ?

UGA was the first school to use that and it sucked. We are fans or family, NOT a dang Nation.

We are Clemson, and we ARE better than that.

I enjoy your blogs. Thanks for your good work.

Our country is in a terrible mess, this has to do with the democrats not regulating the subprime mortgage market because surprise they were making a fortune(obama, clinton, pelosi). The approval rating of congress (majority democrats) was drastically lower than Bush's. Now we have a president who has a fanatical preacher, believes in still born abortion, socialization of our economy, and runs around with the PLO and organizations like ACORN (Who register dead people to vote). McCain did not have a chance because the media did not want him elected. Surprise the media is controlled by leftist elites. Sorry for the political rant but the post by the handle you set me off. Regardless of who is coach next year, Clemson will be far better off in the future than our great country.

After 100+ years of "This is South Carolina Football", I suspect that the USC east fanbase is just used to losing. We are not.

Now, everybody knows the REAl reason usc fans don't complain about Spurrier and Holtz...they are scared the HC will get his feelings hurt and resign. Yep, it's really that simple.

you,

i want what you're smoking. no coordinator as highly touted as foster is going to leave a great job to come be an asst under a guy like dabo. foster would only come to clemson to be head coach. god almighty, you dabo people are as freakin clueless as the bowden lovers. i mean, seriously, do you folks have any clue how this stuff works? you people must be janitors or ditch diggers in the real world to be this dense and naive.

mickey,

usc has never don squat, to call out spurrier or holtz, which some do quietly, is to admit they suck and will always suck. sadly, our fan base is getting use to the beatings too, which is why so many people still love bowden now. somewhere along the line clemson stopped being about winning and became freaking bob jones u.

Mickey,
I have to disagree with you about USC fans not criticizing their coach. I live in Columbia and they do it all the time. After they lost to Vanderbilt, all we heard on Gamecock radio was that Spurrier had lost it and they need a new coach. It was pretty ridiculous listening to all of it.

Carolina is happy where they are in wins and they expect to do no better. Anything past where they are now is a bonus. They are used to being losers. Clemson fans expect better. Not undefeated every year like some critics say but a few ACC titles here and there and a BCS is not too much to ask. Spurrier gives USC all the recognition and fan fare just like Holtz did, otherwise USC would not be talked about or noticed in the college football realms.

One other difference...you see many more mullets, jean shorts, gold chains, and wife beaters in the stands at Williams Brice than you do in Death Valley. That is why Tanneyhill and Garcia were/are so popular down there...they look just like half of the fan base.

Let it go Rustybladz. Just take a deep breath and let it go. After hearing conspiracy theories for two years I've heard enough. I'll go to Fox News for that crap. Keep it off my T-net please.
