Spiller's Role
Spiller’s Role
We had an interesting discussion this morning on my radio show and I wanted to expand on it with today’s blog.
I finally purchased Phil Steele’s pre-season magazine yesterday and was surprised to see him have C.J. Spiller as the nation’s top running back. I was also surprised to see him pick Clemson to win the Atlantic division.
On the show this morning we had a caller ask if Jacoby Ford could step up and be Clemson’s number-one receiver. I am a big Ford fan and will probably cover that topic in the next few days. But I brought up the idea that the offense will look a little different this season and C.J. Spiller was the second returning receiver last season.
In support of my argument I broke down Clemson’s offense under Bowden and how it changed under Dabo. Here is what I found about Spiller’s role in both scenarios:
*In the first six games of the season (under Bowden), Spiller caught nine passes for 111 yards and one touchdown.
*Spiller did not play against Georgia Tech but in the final six games (under Dabo) he caught 25 passes for 325 yards and two touchdowns.
*In the first six games of 2008 he had 48 carries for 314 yards.
*In the final six games of 2008 he had 68 carries for 315 yards.
*In the Virginia game he completed his only pass of the season for a touchdown (under Dabo).
The point is that I think we will see Spiller in an expanded role again this season. First, James Davis is not there to share time and carries. Also, the offensive line is more experienced and has higher expectations in 2009. Finally, there is inexperience at quarterback and hand-offs to Spiller and short passes to Spiller will take pressure off of whoever the signal caller will be.
I like Jamie Harper and Andre Ellington. I think Jacoby Ford can develop into a terrific number-one receiver. I think the tight ends will be a bigger part of the passing game like we saw in the spring game. I think both quarterbacks will play better than what Clemson got last year under center. However, if Clemson is to have the kind of season Phil Steele expects, it has to be done through C.J. Spiller.
Some think he is as good as any athlete to ever step foot on Clemson’s campus. Some think Spiller is as talented as any running back that has ever run down The Hill. I think we have seen too little of Spiller to make either of those statements but I would love to have a bigger sample size this season.
A few weeks ago I wrote a blog concerning Spiller’s Heisman campaign and like most concluded that there is little chance of anyone upsetting Tim Tebow, Sam Bradford or Colt McCoy this year. However, I think it is reasonable to see Spiller having an ACC MVP-type of season.
In his freshman season he had 129 carries. As a sophomore Spiller enjoyed his career high with 145 carries. Last season he had 116 rushing attempts. This season is 200 too much to expect? That would be a little more than 15 carries per game. If he stays healthy is that number too high?
Spiller rushed for 938 yards as a freshman, 768 as a sophomore and 629 a year ago. Is 1,200 yards rushing too much to count on in 2009? Could he average almost 100 yards per game on the ground if he is the feature back?
In terms of receiving, Spiller had 19 as a freshman and 34 in each of the past two seasons. Could we see him catch 50 balls in 2009? That would be 3.8 per game. Is that number obtainable?
As a freshman he had 210 yards receiving. In 2007 he had 271 receiving yards. Last year Spiller had 436 yards receiving. Is 550 yards too high to expect in this senior season?
If those projections are reasonable, a senior season that had 1,200 yards rushing and 550 yards receiving would be among the best in school history.
Spiller was a better football player in 2008. He was more physical and ran between the tackles better. I fully expect to see more of that in 2009.
Spiller had 10 rushing touchdowns as a freshman, three as a sophomore and seven last year. Could he get 12 this season?
He had two receiving touchdowns in each of his first two seasons and three last season. Is it reasonable to think five could be in store this year?
I am not sure we could expect his kick-off returns or punt returns numbers to increase dramatically because he is not getting more attempts like he is in the offense with James Davis gone. However, even if his special teams numbers remain the same then he would have an exceptional year in that category.
Those numbers don’t look like Heisman numbers but they do look like ACC Player of the Year numbers. They also look like the kind of numbers that could lead Clemson to a division title. Clemson’s rushing offense has to improve in 2009 because they can’t win the division by running the ball 112 yards per game.
There is a famous saying that states, “If not me, who? If not now, when?”
Let’s hope that message is clear with C.J. Spiller and this offense in his senior season.

Great blog! I believe that Spiller is the best player on the team at this point but we both know that if skill won championships, Clemson would have a few this decade. I think the reason Phil chose Clemson was because of the returning OL and their "potential" (which is a dirty word)to be improved. If the OL improves and CJ stays healthy, I think there is no doubt he will be named the best player in the conference and top 10 in the country. I also believe that if these happen Clemson will be Atlantic division champs, but that is a large "IF"! Phil has reputation for being the most accurate predictor, hopefully he is on the money this time!

I would be interested to know how many of Spiller's rushing touchdowns were for 5 yards or less. For better or worse, he has never been a featured back in our goal line offense, and that really cuts down on his scores. JD got the ball in goal line situations the last four years, and Jamie Harper will probably get it in those situations next year.
The key to his season is the offensive line...if they are as good as they were in 2006 and he gets twice as many carries, then he could have a monster year.

MP please stop the rhetorical questions. I love reading your blog, i read it every day, but half of them are littered with rhetorical questions. We get it, no one can see into the future, but there has to be a better way to write that than peppering your articles fortune cookie type queries.

If your stats are accurate;
*In the first six games of 2008 he had 48 carries for 314 yards.
*In the final six games of 2008 he had 68 carries for 315 yards.
All this tells us is that no matter how many times he runs the ball, our offensive line can't produce more than about 600 yards for him in a season.
Spiller could be the best football player in the history of the sport and it doesn't matter. Our OL was horrible last year and "more experienced" won't get us where we fans want to be. Experience does not equal talent.
Spiller has proven talent, our OL does not.

Spiller is electric. But I'll take Jahvid Best over Spiller and so will the NFL. Best has nearly as good juke and breakaway, similarly good hands and kick returns, but he's more physical between & outside the tackles, and he can go airborne for 2-3 yards at the goal line.
Best: 194 for 1580yds (8.1YPC), 15 TDs, 86yd long.
CJ: 116 for 629yds (5.4 YPC), 7 TDs, 57 long.
Spiller has better receiving stats than Best but I don't think Cal’s offense uses backs as downfield receivers very often… and at 8.1YPC, why bother?
My belly is full of orange Kool Aid, but I agree with Steele on Clemson being favored to win the Atlantic. Clemson will be equal or better than last year at almost every position (except safety & maybe WR). BC, Wake, UMD, & arguably FSU will be worse than last year. NCSU will be improved, but not favored.
Clemson and FSU both play GT & Miami. But Clemson gets UVA while FSU plays UNC. NCSU plays Duke, VT & UNC. Non-division schedule edge to Clemson.

RU4GOD2,
the numbers you're putting up are for a total of 116 carries. That is about 9 carries per game over a 13 game season.
I agree with Mickey on this one - if C.J. *touches* it (by kickoff, rush, or pass) 25 times per game, he will be in the 150-200 yards per game, TOTAL offense with probably around 20 TOTAL TDs. Those are ACC Player Of The Year projections, which is all he's saying.
He's already posted similar numbers in previous years with an inexperienced OL - the difference is he didn't get that level of touches over a 13-game season.

RU raises a legitimate concern about the OL being more experienced but being the same guys as last year.
It's probably worth noting that in one of those first 6 games last year (against Wake), Spiller only had 2 carries (for 10 yards) before pulling his hamstring. He probably would have had another 12-14 carries and 50-60 yards against Wake, were it not for the injury.

I still have Phil Steele's pres season mag from last year. He predicted great things from us then too. I would not put too much stock in his opinion although he is definitely the most detailed guy out there that writes pre season mags. Until Clemson wins 8 games this year I am predicting 7-5. I hope I am wrong but I will never again allow my pre-season expectations to get as high as they were last year.

In regards for RU4GOD2's comments. I think you are wrong about our O-Line, we have had plenty of talent for years, maybe not 4 and 5 star, but good solid players. The blocking schemes under Spence and Bowden were horrible. Horrible to be nice. I would be willing to bet we see a lot different blocking scheme, which will make a vast difference in the production of the O-Line. JMHO

I'm looking forward to the season, but my expectations are a bit guarded... Inexperience (although better athletically over '08) at QB,questions at WR and along the OL will have opponents loading the box on us... again!!!...maybe an imporved scheme upfront and our renewed emphasis on physicality will make the difference... I believe so!
