Snow Days; Recruiting

Snow Days
Few things are as beautiful as snow in Clemson. Unfortunately it does not happen that often but I am not sure why. Someone smarter than me would have to explain the lake effect and why it snows more in Greenville and Spartanburg than it does in Clemson. Does the lake warm up the air that much? Thanks in advance.

This morning as I rode home from work, I had to take a detour to check out Death Valley with snow covering the field. I had realized on the show this morning that I have never seen Clemson play in the snow. The Tigers defeated Louisiana Tech in the Humanitarian Bowl in Boise, ID at the end of the 2001 season but I did not make the trip. Also I know there was a lot of snow on the ground but I can’t recall if it snowed during that game.

The closest I have seen snow at a Clemson football game was the 1979 Peach Bowl at old Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium. If memory serves me right, that day started out nice but a cold front came through and the game was played in a sleet storm. The wind blew hard that day and the wind chill had to be under 20 degrees (maybe closer to single digits.) There was no accumulation if ice and sleet on the field but it was a rainy, sleety, windy day and perhaps the coldest I have ever been at a Clemson football game.

The Independence Bowl of 1985 was another cold affair. Clemson lost to Minnesota that even in Shreveport but I remember extreme temperatures being the story of the game.

The only other brutally cold game I can recall was the Clemson win over South Carolina in 2000. Rod Gardner’s catch and Aaron Hunt’s field goal took place on a very cold evening in Death Valley.

I have seen it pour rain at several Clemson games including the 1988 Clemson-FSU “puntrooskie game” and the Clemson win over Georgia Tech in Death Valley in 2002. Both of those were September games and warm rain was a lot better than cold rain. There were a couple of trips to Blacksburg, VA where rain was a big factor. I remember the 1989 win over the Hokies as a rain game. The 1977 game was played in a rain storm as well but maybe one other Virginia Tech featured bad rain but I can’t recall the year.

The 1993 opener against UNLV had lightening threats that sent both teams to the locker rooms for a period of time. That is the only time I can recall a game being stopped because of weather.

Heat is usually a bigger concern during football season lately. The Georgia game of 2003 was one of the hottest games in recent years until the Boston College game in 2005.

When I was a kid I remember a dangerously hot game in which people were passing out in the stands and I may be wrong but for some reason I keep thinking that was an opener against The Citadel in either the 1976 or 1978 season.

Wind is sometimes a factor but the game that I remember the most in terms of wind affecting a Clemson game was a game at College Park, MD. I think it may have been 1982 when All-ACC punter Dale Hatcher would put these rockets that looked like they were going to be boomers but the wind took the ball backwards after about 30 yards of air time.

Unfortunately, some of the coldest I have been at Clemson sporting events came at baseball games in March as the lake sent the winds whipping through the players and spectators.

I would be interested to read about some of your memories of Clemson football in extreme weather.

Recruiting
Signing day was three weeks from yesterday and I continue to get e-mails wanting to know what Clemson will do if all of these guys want to commit. One asked yesterday that what would they do if Jamie Harper, Dwayne Allen, RJ Mattes, Kenneth Page, Antoine McClain, Brandon Thompson, Jeremy Lewis, Benjamin Jones, Jerrell Harris and Jaron Brown all wanted to commit?

The answer is simple. That won’t happen so you don’t need to worry about it.

Clemson has 20 commitments and will sign 24-26 players in this class. The above e-mailer mentioned 10 players that if the Tigers got 5 of 10 it would be a phenomenal year.

I always held by two ideas at this stage of the process that seemed to work and usually helped with the expectations of late commitments. First, these prospects have had two years to commit and there must be some reason they have held off. Sometimes they may be looking for something that is not there. Sometimes they are waiting on others to see what their best option may be. But in the end, if a player is supposed to be leaning to you for several months and he has not committed then something may be up. I am not saying Harper or Thompson won’t be Tigers but I am saying that they have had every opportunity in the world to be Tigers before now.

Also, at this stage you are usually fighting great programs for great players. Consider who Clemson is fighting with for these guys.

Harper-Florida, Miami, Illinois, FSU
Allen-Georgia commitment
Mattes-NC State, Virginia, UNC, USC
Page-Tennessee, Notre Dame, North Carolina
McClain-Auburn, Alabama, LSU, Tennessee
Thompson-LSU, Tennessee
Lewis-Miami, North Carolina
Jones-Miami, Ohio State, LSU, Auburn
Harris-Auburn, Southern Cal, LSU, Tennessee
Brown-South Carolina, Michigan

Batting .500 with your last few prospects is usually a tremendous effort.

If a player has made it this far without committing then he either has decided and is just playing the game or he really does not know. I predict one or two of these guys Clemson is waiting on may be playing the game but I think more could be turned in the last few days.

We can criticize players for not knowing but I saw a poll the other day that had a big percentage of Americans say they can be swayed in the last 48 hours they vote in an election.

I think the Tigers can finish strong in recruiting this year but there is not a guy on that list that would shock me if he signed elsewhere. Be patient and stay tuned. I think it is going to be a terrific ending but I can’t guarantee it.

Comments:

The 1991 game at UNC was played at night in a mixture of wind and heavy rain and sleet; the wind chill was 11 degrees. I was in the marching band and by halftime I literally could not feel my fingers to play my instrument. The stadium ran out of hot chocolate before the end of the 1st quarter. We won the game, but it was an absolutely miserable trip.

...Also, the 100th Clemson-Carolina game was a night game and extremely cold and windy, with temperatures in the 20's. I was not at The Catch II game (long story) but I understand the 100th game was not quite as cold as that one.

The 2002 Georgia Tech game was not just played in heavy rain--it was literally a tropical storm moving over the area. Never in my life have I seen so much rain at a game. The water in the stands (I scored front-row North Deck seats) was halfway up my shins before the rain finally slacked off and the drainage system caught up.

In 1963 or 64 we played GaTech in such a rainstorm that it was ankle deep on the sidelines at Grant Field. The officials would put the ball down and it would float away.
There was also a game at home about that time that was interrupted by a Thunderstorm and hail. There was so much hail that the field had to be cleared before the game could be continued.

Mickey it seems I remember the 1972 Clemson-USC game as being played on a dark , damp day @ around 32 degrees with snow flurries. Heidi Davis scored the only touchdown in the game for the win I think.

Tonybenson62003 game in the hail was against Georgia. I remember being on the hill under cardboard.

badcat ... Heidi Davis scored our TD and we kicked the point after ... SCAR scored late and went for 2 and the win. Jimmy Williamson batted down th epass to preserve the 7-6 victory.

It was cold and wet with a mixture of sleet and frozen rain. Miserable. But, the win went a long way toward making up for the weather.

Does anyone have any pictures from this week to send of Clemson and/or Death Valley in the snow?

My Freshman year at Clemson (1996) my family came into town for the GT game. It rained as hard as I have ever seen it! This was pre-west zone days and the locker room had a canvas tunnel outside the entrance. At halftime everyone scattered to take cover. I turn around and my family has disappeared into that tunnel and into the locker room. Nobody said a word and it was a thrill of a lifetime for my younger brother!

In my 4 years at Clemson that was the only game in the rain! Being from Syracuse that is unbelievable!

Hot game - UVA 1999 - hottest I have ever been in my life

Cold game - Yes "The Catch II" but also I remember either Bowden Bowl I or III being cold.

grover -- Yep, that 1991 UNC game was brutal. And I was sitting (standing, shivering) right behind the band, underneath the trees, so every time the wind blew the trees would dump more rain/ice down on us.

I believe it snowed during the 1996 Clemson-Virginia in Charlottesville. Nothing stuck, but it was certainly cold. Was someone there with me to confirm?

I'm going with the '79 Peach Bowl. I was in the upper deck and I was COLD!! The wind whipping thru was brutal. It was impossible to get into the restrooms; they were full of people trying to get out of that cold wind. I don't believe I ever watched another game of any kind in Fulton County Stadium.

In 1959, Clemsopn hosted NCSU and Roman Gabriel at DV in aftermath of a literal hurricane. Rain and wind was so intense that most fans and students did not go to the stadium until the second half. As I recall Clemson won but the field was a muddy mess.

79 Peach - coldest I have ever been at a sporting event

02 GT - only time I have ever left a game early. The Tropical Storm had passed, but we were hit with the always dangerous "back side of the storm"

82 MD - very cold and windy, but not as bad as the peach

thanks for the memories

I remember a game either my freshman or sophmore year (92 or 93) where the Maryland game was delayed due to lighting. One of the friends I was with at the game worked at the P-plant and let us in the back door to wait it out and still be able to hear when play resumed.

'79 Peach Bowl (upper deck) was far and away the coldest I've ever been at a game. There was a high school game (Parker High in Greenville) in the late '50's that was close, but I didn't have to stay at that one.

Mickey, please use the weather phenomenon: LIGHTNING, rather than the changing of weight or color: lightening. Thanks.

TC, I was at the 1996 CU/UVA game in C-ville. Started out partly sunny, then came the rain, then the sleet, and finally snow. You are correct; it didn't stick but it did snow. Crazy weather during one game. Best part - we won. :)

There was a game in the late 1950's against NC State at Clemason where the wind was blowing so hard that all of the points were scored on the asme end of the field. Final score was 6 to 3 Clemson.

Also there was a game against Georgia that was stopped or delayed after half time because of a hail storm. It was probably in the 1960's.

Women understand. How come men don't? We are scared of commitment. When I was a teenager, I went and talked to every recruiter and slept on it for almost six months before committing to the Army for three + years. Why is it so surprising when a teenager is hesitant to commit to any program for four or five years of their lives? Heck, when I was that age I could not even decide on what girl I wanted to date. The ones who do commit right away know what they want, consider them lucky. The others are probably just smart shoppers. (Well, let's at least try give them the benefit of the doubt.)

It was the fall of 1963 when Clemson and Georgia played to a rain and hail-delayed 7-7 tie game. I was 10 year- old attending my second Clemson football game. There were sunny skies when the game began.

I will never forget the 1986 or 1987 NCState game at Carter Finley. It absolutely poured for the entire game. We sat under huge rain ponchos with the hoods pulled so far over our eyes and rain running all over our faces to the point where we could barely see the game. I've never been so soaked in my life! The worst part was we lost...if my memory serves me right?! It was pretty miserable!
