SC State Review
The SC State Game Review
Clemson came out and took care of business Saturday with its most complete performance of the season. I understand it was an inferior opponent but some things were worked out. Here is a review and future questions:
Sarah Palin
Here are the good looking things I saw Saturday afternoon:
*James Davis-It was nice to see Davis in the end zone again. He had perhaps his best game of the season and I needed to see Clemson have success in short-yardage. Davis provided a spark to the running game and I love to see him have that kind of success.
*Interior Running Game-The Tigers seemed to man block more this week as opposed to zone the blocking scheme. SC State is not great defensive team but Clemson did a nice job of exploiting their advantage in the interior running game.
*Offensive Line-I liked the idea of having this group be a major part of the game plan. Clemson thought it had an advantage here and the offensive line looked like it dominated SC State.
*The Tight Ends-It seemed like we had to wait forever for the light to come on for Durrell Barry but he continues to play well. Michael Palmer looked good on both of his receptions and his downfield blocking.
*Defensive Intensity-Apparently some of the defense got the message from Tommy Bowden last week. The defense seemed to play with more intensity. I also noticed more hard hits from the defense Saturday.
*Dorell Scott-This was the senior’s best performance of the season. I have been waiting for Scott to control the line of scrimmage and be more productive and we got that Saturday.
*Jarvis Jenkins-It seems like each week we see more of Jenkins and we continue to see more productivity.
*Brandon Thompson-The true freshman is making the most of his opportunity. He had another sack against the Bulldogs and now has played his way into more playing time.
*Special Teams-It is nice to open up my e-mail account and not have to read the floods of e-mails that ask about special teams this season. This was the fourth consecutive game where Clemson won the special teams battle.
*Willy Korn-The backup looked impressive once again. His 7-7 performance validated earlier action and the future appears very bright at this position.
*Jamie Harper-The freshman back got a chance to showcase his skills and once again he impressed. Harper is a big back but he has very quick feet.
*Uniforms-I love Orange. It is the primary school color. I know some don’t like purple and will disagree with me but I think Saturday was the best uniform combination. I love the contrast between the orange helmet, the purple jerseys and white pants. It may not for everyone but I loved it.
Nancy Grace
Here are the bad things I saw Saturday:
*Picks and Turnovers-You can’t keep throwing the ball directly to linebackers because it will get you beat against good teams. The tipped pass from Jacoby Ford that resulted in a pick was a bad pass as well. Turnovers don’t hurt against NC State or SC State but they will kill you against good teams.
*Pass Rush-Three sacks is OK but I thought the Tigers should have been able to apply more pressure to Long and the Bulldog passing game. I thought he had too much time too often.
*The Pre-Game Tradition-When you win 54-0, not a lot went wrong on the field so it allows me to be picky on the next three topics but three traditions failed Saturday. Running down the Hill is not hard. It is something we should have perfected considering we have been doing it for 65 years. We have been touching Howard’s Rock and running down the Hill since 1966 or 42 years. It seems like we could perfect it by now. One Clemson Associate Athletic Director told me Saturday, “We have turned it in to most confusing 25 seconds in college football.”
*The Post-Game Tradition-What a joke. Let me get this right…I stopped and counted 99 security guards in the brightest, neon green-yellow shirts on the field getting prepared for the mass chaos that all of these mean Clemson fans had planned. Many had radios. About 20 of them had signs that read something about field access delayed until the visiting team had left the field. On the flip side it read, “WAIT”. Clemson police chief’s Johnson Link’s video played about five times telling people about the new policy. Dale Gilbert, the PA announcer, had to read the announcement about five times throughout the game. I am sure Clemson’s athletic department had to outsource the security and paid a pretty penny for the 99 security guards, their neon shirts, their radios, and those elementary school signs. I am sure this security company tries to turn a profit as well. So how did it go? Embarrassing. The Clemson players bolted for the locker room as I warned on my radio show that they would do. They have family and I don’t blame them for wanting to see their friends and family as soon as they can. The Clemson band could not be heard playing the alma mater because the SC State band was playing theirs. The irony of the entire deal is that State players actually stayed on the field in front of their band while they played their alma mater. The goal was to protect the opposing players and coaches but the majority of players and coaches that were on the field when field when the fans were allowed onto the field were from SC State. An expensive disaster. Why did they just not arrest the two idiots that dropped an F-bomb on Tom O’Brien? BTW-O’Brien did not even complain or make a big deal out of it. The athletic department has been looking for an excuse to end this tradition for years but like I have said many times on the radio, I don’t trust those in charge to make the proper changes in any aspect. They spent hours on the solution and thousands of dollars on a new plan and still failed miserably. This is another example of disconnect between Clemson fans and the athletic department. The athletic department thinks so many fans are so wrong about what they want but their solutions are often times worse.
*The Student Section Tradition-I hate to be someone to bitch and moan about the little things and we are blessed to have won 54-0 so it does give me a chance to touch on something else that has been bothering me. I once viewed the Clemson student section as one of the great traditions at the school. It makes my stomach turn to look in the student section and see hundreds of empty seats. Last week the excuse was so many students had so many exams the following week that many could not come out and support the football team. The NC State game was too hot for some. It was too early for others. This week was another pathetic performance from the student section. Low turnout and student leaving early was once again an issue. Is it wrong to think that when you make it a goal to become a Top 20 (Public) school this is one of the results? Maybe I am totally off base here but would the student section look like the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s and 1990s if the student body looked more like that. Is it fair to ask if an 1100 SAT student from South Carolina would be a better student fan than a 1500 SAT kid from New Jersey? No disrespect to smart kids or those above the Mason-Dixon line and maybe this is an uneducated question. I know we lost to Alabama but we are ranked in the top 25 and you only have seven home games a year for four years as a student. Maybe a Clemson legacy would be more inclined to get out of the bed in time for a 1:00 home football game that you have free tickets for. Then again, maybe I am way off base. I do know this, the student body at Clemson cannot criticize the football team this year. It would be hypocritical for many to do so.
Rachel Ray
So here are the question marks I still have:
*Injuries-Can Clemson sustain anymore injuries along both lines of scrimmage?
*Close, low scoring field position battle-Can the Tigers win a game against a tough opponent?
*What other Clemson traditions will be sacrificed soon?

Mickey I agree with you. Clemson's biggest problem isn't with the team or coaches it is with administration (game day rules, the band, pre/ post game activities) and a small portion of the fan base. Isn't it interesting that a few years ago students used to gripe about "IPTAY" fans not really supporting the team and now it is the other way around? If the students don't have much enthusiasm now Death Valley will be a true graveyard in a few years. Has Central Spirit Committee lost it’s spirit?

I still wonder why Korn didn't start the third qtr. One of my buddies at work said this morning that "Harper need to start the 3rd qtr with a big lead". That's funny, I thought Harper was the starter all last year...
It would be nice to see Korn get some snaps with ALL the other starters. Of course, if they did that then the coaching staff would not have the excuse next year of 'new QB, limited PT, etc.'

I am even more concerned about Harper, and worse the shortsighted coaches creating a "Proctor" type finish to this season. Harper is lucky that several more of his passes were not picked against NC State and SC State, and he does not throw the long downfield passes to Kelley, which were his trademark until the shoulder injury in the BC game. I am not pro-Korn. I am pro-Harper, but would like to see him return to form. If that means sitting out a few games, he just missed three golden opportunities to do that.
They are stacking up the line, because of his poor passing, except for that one brilliant touch pass to Spiller. Watch Maryland stack up the line, and force Harper to beat them. I genuinely hope he can come back! GO TIGERS! GO HARPER - RETURN TO YOUR ALL AMERICAN FORM!

What other Clemson traditions will soon be sacrifices? How about family friendly tailgating atmosphere being sacrificed just so that a few can blast their favorite vulgar, obscenity laced music for all to hear. How about those who now get liquored up and shout the F word for all around them to hear. Clemson tailgating is rapidly changing.

What's up with Harper? He played so well last year and now is playing not even close to that level. TB says there is still separation between Harper and Korn. Well from what I've seen of Korn he's playing better and has more zip on his passes. If Harper cant produce he needs to step aside. It didnt matter against our last competition but the schedule gets harder every week now.

Mickey, you act like the students were the only were leaving at half time this past weekend or the weekend before that. It is the entire fan base. I think this has a lot to do with 4 straight games at home against inferior opponents. This is a scheduling mess up, not a down turn in student support. Last year (3/4 of the same students were here), the stands were filled for every game. So don't pawn the fan's suspect attendance on the student section. If people weren't outside trying to sell tickets and couldn't prior to the game, and the student section was empty, then you could possibly have a complaint.

When I went to Clemson in the early 80's, the student section was full and most students didn't miss games regardless of their SAT scores or home state. I sat next to plenty of smart yankees who screamed their heads off and are still die-hards to this day. But back then we were a championship football team, we had fewer games, and we rarely played more than one OOC cupcake. I fear (perhaps foolishly) that by going without an ACC title for 17 years, Clemson is breeding a younger generation of Clemson grads that won't be die-hard Clemson football fans, and eventually Clemson's football support will fade away as us older fans from the championship era die off.

Central Spirit has not lost its spirit! Our block was one of the few groups of orange left in the student section til the end.

I am thankful these 3 games are over. I know they were neccessary to get back some confidence but now it is time to see what team Clemson really has. You can say the season begins this Saturday. I know we are ranked but people still don't take us seriously and won't/shouldn't until we prove ourselves. Win the next 3 and then lets get excited.

Question: Is Mickey any relation of Sarah and Dick? Also, this schedule is silly, I thought we got over PC type scheduling a long time ago. And the Pres wants to be first class. A joke.

As a fellow student I agree completely. I was very embarrassed when I saw the number of students in the student section. There are plenty of die hard Clemson students, but not enough. The normal students only care about the big games. I guess they do not understand this is the last year we will see James Davis and CJ Spiller in person, and those players do not come around often. Also I was very embarrassed at the entire crowd when they decided to stand and holler more for the SC State Band, but would not stand when the Tiger Band was playing Tiger Rag. I wonder how the Tiger Band felt when the entire stadium stood and cheered for an opposing team's band instead of cheering for them? What about the football team too, there were no cheers for them coming back out at the half.

Mickey, I enjoy reading your blog but it makes you sound like a redneck to suggest that students who are smarter and/or from above the Mason-Dixon line do not care as much about football. And just so you get your facts straight, Clemson still has the same proportion of in-state to out-of-state students it has always had. So please don't try to suggest that we have more "Yankee" students who don't understand football like "Southern boys" do.
I realize that President Barker's top 20 goal is a convenient target for you and others, but in reality it has absolutely nothing to do with our football program's inability to get over the hump. President Barker has been responsible for many positive changes in the athletic program and has invested a lot of money in coaches and facilities. He has played a role in giving Bowden everything he needs to succeed. It's all up to Bowden now.

I feel compelled to write and tell you how strongly I disagree with what I have to call an ignorant comment: 'if an 1100 SAT student from South Carolina would be a better student fan than a 1500 SAT kid from New Jersey?'
You expressed two beliefs: that the university is more about sports than academic excellence, and the 'New Jersey' example was simple, stupid 'anti-Yankee' bias.
You've offended me and thousands of students who don't share that backwards parochial idea about the South and North.
Honestly, it's the 21st century. In a world where the global economy is defining most everything you perpetuate an idea that what state you were born in somehow matters in the grand scheme of things. Is this how you see Clemson preparing the next generation?
My best to you, Ryan, and the rest of the family for his quick and complete recovery.

As a student I cannot stand to see the seats empty especially in the student section, and the biggest problem with the student section comes with the greek blocks. Fraternities and sororities are given massive blocks so that they can all sit together, and then a lot of them either leave early or don't even show up (opting to tailgate in the quad instead). I don't understand why they need to sit together, or why they should get blocks to begin with...they should have to stand in line for your tickets like everybody else. As far as the rest of the students go, its hard to keep some interested in three home games in a row against inferior opponents. I can assure you that the rest of the games will have a different student section from the one you have seen from the first three games... but if all else fails, this tiger will be in the stands every game, all game, as long he's a student.

I think I said in the blog that this might be an uneducated opinion and that I may be wrong. I did not claim that the purpose of the university was to be an athletic school and never mentioned anything about goal of the university. I only wondered if a local student would be a better fan. I grew up a Clemson fan in South Carolina. Had I gone to college in Wisconsin my guess is that I would not be as passionate about my school. Just a theory. I may be wrong.

The percentage of students from South Carolina has been the same for at least the last 25 years. We now however have the 1500 SAT from SC who may have gone elsewhere 10 years ago. I think this is a good thing and I also welcome the other smart folks that come from where ever they come from....even New Jersey.

It was SC State!!!!!!!!!!! Bring on the conference schedule. Can anyone honestly say they were pumped up about the tigers scoring their 7th unanswered touchdown in the second half. As a college football fan and huge tiger fan I was in the parking lot cracking a beer and getting ready to watch the UNC/VT game. Haven't missed a Clemson home game in 16 years and the reason the students, fans, faculty, and their dogs weren't into this game was because it was SC State. Moving on.... Get ready to rock the valley this week!

milerock,
The ratio of in-state students to out of state students is now 65%-35% but there is a movement to decrease it to 60%-40% as soon as next year.
