One Clemson

One Clemson
Last February Clemson’s president said, “In recent weeks I have learned that the words ‘One Clemson’ are easy to say but harder to live.

He was right. Clemson has been divided for too long. You have the Top 20 supporters and the Top 20 detractors. You have the academic people against the athletic segment. Clemson has those that support the in-state student increase and those that want a higher percentage of out of staters. Some have supported the higher tuition hikes and others have opposed it. Bowden had some supporters and had some others that have been calling for a change. Some Tiger supporters like the purple and others only want to see orange. Some “Woo Who” and others cringe at the sound of it.

Before Monday, the president, athletic director, coaches, IPTAY and others have tried to unite Clemson but have run into opposition.

That was before Monday.

Monday everything changed. Monday Clemson found a leader and someone who is not interested in the continued divisiveness and has been effective in ending it. They found someone who has had less than 48 hours to make his case but he has made it better than some who had 10 years or more to do so.

In the face of adversity and in a place where time is so crucial that there seems like he could never have enough hours in the day to do what needs to be done by Saturday at noon, Dabo Swinney does not appear to have a hard time living “One Clemson.”

Dabo Swinney is the only person that has been able to unite the Clemson Nation and he did it despite not having any head coaching experience. He did not need head coaching experience because he already had experience in something more important in handling the task he is facing. He had experience in handling adversity. He had experience in leadership. He also had experience in accountability and responsibility.

After the Maryland game Dabo gathered his wide receivers in the locker room and told them they were responsible for the loss. He was referencing Aaron Kelly’s holding on C.J. Spiller’s touchdown run that was called back. He was also referring to Xavier Dye’s personal foul on the final drive as well as Jacoby Ford’s fumble on the punt.

Dabo was not calling the players out for the purpose of using them as a scapegoat. It was done in private. He did it to let them know in advance how difficult practice would be the following week because he was going to teach them more about accountability and responsibility.

On Monday at his first team meeting he told the players that if you are “The Guy” then be “The Guy”. He said this is only about performance and execution. He told them those that play well and with effort and with a physical presence will play and those that don’t will not see the field.

Accountability and responsibility are two major parts of Dabo’s stamp on this program. At his second practice as the head coach he saw many members of the team throw their water cups on the ground. He stopped practice and told the team that that was unacceptable. He said, “You wouldn’t do that at your momma’s house.” He then told the team that the managers work hard every day and they take away from their job to go over and pick up dozens of cups each day. He told them to be responsible and throw the cups away in the trash cans they had provided or the team would run after practice or he could just stop water breaks all together.

After practice Dabo spoke to the team again. Usually the team huddled around the coach but Dabo felt it was not right to have to turn his back of half of the guys and then turn his back on the other side. So Dabo had the entire team take a knee in front of him. I was told all eyes were on him at all times.

Another stamp is positive energy. Dabo is one of the most positive people I have ever been around. He is taking steps to end the negative thoughts and energy but he understands that the way to end negative energy is to replace it with positive energy. You have to give the people a reason to be positive. Most times most people will choose positive if they are given a choice.

He has been the head coach here only a few hours but almost everything he has done he has done in an attempt to unite Tiger Nation with the idea of creating “One Clemson.” The stamp he has put on this program is a stamp of unity.

He put that stamp on it in his first team meeting.

He did that in an ultra impressive first press conference.

He united with his new policy of the team and coaches having to wear coats and ties on all road trips and game day rides to the stadium.

He is trying to unite with the Tiger Walk this Saturday at 10:00 AM when the Tigers will get off of the bus between Jervey Athletic Center and Lot 5. The team will then walk through the middle of the parking lot among the fans in an attempt to show more unity between players and fans.

He did that with a call for an Orange out.

He did that with the e-mail to students that informed them that the entire student body will be invited to a practice soon and he plans a pep rally with the students soon as well.

He united the staff when he asked Brad Scott if he preferred the two-point stance or the three point stance and decided to go with the three-point stance.

Most of what Dabo has done in 48 hours has been fairly simple stuff but the cumulative effect is working. He is demanding accountability and responsibility. He is providing positive energy. But most importantly, he has provided unity.

I have been to a bunch of meetings and heard a bunch of speeches from a bunch of Clemson people about “One Clemson.” I have heard the others attempt it but this is the first time I have seen it work. A fresh start. A renewed enthusiasm. ALL-IN!

Dabo Swinney has taken just a few short hours to lead by inspiring others to follow. He is the best example of “One Clemson” that I have seen since I first heard the slogan introduced. In the face of adversity, his genuine nature and positive energy make it look easy to live “One Clemson.”

I'm excited. He gets it.

On the littering thing I have a comment. There was an old coach who made his team, not managers, do that and leave visitng locker rooms neat and orderly after away games. He did pretty well. His name was John Wooden.

I'm not saying any of these things are the answer but it is refreshing to see this approach.

Prior to Monday's news, I was not really excited about heading up to Clemson this weekend, but I must say that since receiveing Monday's news, I am pumped. I am excited about the game, and I think that the Valley will be packed. Now, I want to see our players play inspired, physical football - for 60 minutes!

Maybe it's just the change, but I feel we've got a real winner with Swinney right now. If he does a good job this season, I will undoubtedly hope he stays.

I want to go to Clemson games again. Can't wait for Saturday. GO TIGERS!

I will be at Disney World this weekend with my family, but don't tell my wife that I would rather be at the Tiger Walk and support my team! Come On Tiger fans! Fill up DV with 80,000 for the GT game. Let's make a statement to the college football world and to the CU administration about how we feel about our Clemson football program and what a united "family" we truly are. We are the same fans that have always been there for this program. We now have a shot at getting back to the smash-mouth football team we should have been, putting the fear of God in our opponents. I want to see the GT quarterback sacked before he can even comlete his 5-step dropback, like we used to see! Go Tigers!

I agree whole-heartedly! I think all of these "little things" that Dabo is doing is great! Society doesn't tolerate littering, why should it be promoted on a ball field! The Tiger walk, Coats and Ties all make a statement of just how much is changing...for the better! I think TDP handled the change with total class and honor. I believe that Tommy was fired that is why the total payout is being allocated. But TDP took the high road and asked Tommy to resign. We gave Tommy 9.5 years to prove himself and he didn't get it done. Can't we all (including my wife!) give Dabo 6 (hopefully 7) games to prove himself? Let's all pull strong for Dabo and the Tigers the rest of the season and on!! GO TIGERS!!

It's the details and little things in life that make the difference!

Most people have it wrong. They say "don't sweat the small stuff". The reality is, the big things are usually out of our control, and tend to sort themselves out anyway. It's the little things that are most people's down fall. It's the plethora of little things that build up over time and overwhelm most people. Yet it's these little things we can control.

Most people fail by getting lost in the big picture because they lose sight of the details and abandon the things they can control, the little things, the details. There is ample evidence this was part of TB's problem.

Dabo gets it. He understands the simple things, like discipline, appreciation and respect for others (the cups), self respect (coats n ties), etc. all add up to create synergy and a better big picture. A house is only as good as its foundation, yet the foundation is the part of the house you never see! Like the saying goes, "true character is defined by how you carry yourself when no one is watching".

I don't have dreams, I have goals. The difference in a goal and a dream is simple - goals have a plan. You have to crawl before you walk, and walk before you run.

When I read this I noticed how many of these points, traits, for losers rang true for TB ...

ALL IN!

Nice comments and spot-on. Everyone talking about candidates for the job needs to wait to see what happens for the next 6 games - or at least the next single game if you're that impatient. Everything I've read, heard, and seen this week from Dabo is impressive and a breath of fresh air. Lots of people are searching for the next big hire but it is quite possible we've already hit that "home run hire" out of the park.

You couldn't have said it any better Mickey. You're last two BLOG's have been right on. I can't wait to get up there Saturday and feel that warm, orange feeling that still gives me chill bumps! I too am "ALL IN"!!!

Go Tigers,
CH

Great blog Mickey.

Sounds like we gave the wrong guy $3.5M! Wow! Go Dabo!

Hope lives! Go Tigers! 11-3!

It is nice to see positive talk surrounding clemson again! I began to dread gamedays simply because of all the negative after we lost. The fact is that we will lose again and it is our job to help stay positive and support the players and Clemson the best way we can. I am not sure if this will turn things around but Dabo sure has made a huge difference in a short period of time! Like everyone else I am pumped about Saturday!!!! Go Tigers!!!!

Citadeltiger mentioned Charlie Taafe. The last I heard he was weaving his car through Charleston traffic. When the cops pulled him over he claimed to have an "inner ear infection". This type of incident happened more than once. We should pass on this guy.

Accountability is nice.
Presentation is nice.
Unity is nice.
But if coach Swinney can stop the Woo Hoo then he may go down as one of my all-time favorites.

Dabo, Please ban the Who Woo. It has got to go. Great blog btw.
