Mickey,
I have been listening all week and I have heard you talk about recruiting without making any projections. Please tell me we are gonna get some of these last six big time prospects. Thanks.
Carl
Carl,
Thanks for listening. I am cautious when it comes to recruiting because you never really know. I would say the staff feels confident they can hang on to the current commitments but they are still having to hold off a couple of SEC schools at this point. As far as the last few go, again I am cautious but optimistic. We will know more about Zach Maynard and Keenan Allen after their scheduled trip to Cal this weekend but at this point I think it looks good for Clemson. DJ Howard looks like he will visit Kentucky this weekend but again I think Clemson is in good shape heading into the weekend. Justin Parker has been a Clemson lean in recent weeks and I think Dabo, Steele and Brooks will do a good job with his in-home visit tomorrow. I am not too optimistic on Ethan Farmer or Darius Lipford but the in-home visits went great. I have learned that anything can happen on signing day but it looks like the staff has really put themselves in prime condition for another big finish.
Mickey,
I suspect there have always been perpetually unhappy Clemson fans that feel their way of thinking is correct and the coach is wrong. I also suspect there have always been usc lite fans with nothing good to say about Clemson. Introduce the internet and these same people have a forum for their rants. Major news media and recruits can read the same rants and get the impression that the ranters represent the fans since the ranters post often and loudly. I doubt this phenomena is restricted to Clemson fan boards and forums. However, it does appear that "Clemson eats its own" is a perceived characteristic of Clemson fans. Just my 2 cents.
AS
AS,
I think this is the case everywhere. I go to a couple of New York Yankee sites everyday and it happens there. I go to several ACC and SEC sites a few days a week and it happens there too. It seems the internet has given a chance to people to complain without any repercussions because of the anonymity.
Mickey,
Read your blog this morning and was intrigued by the creation of the Athletic Department Oversight committee. Just wondered if you had any additional information on this committee. Thanks,
Reed
Reed,
It is my understanding that David Wilkins chairs the committee that is designed to oversee all activities in the athletic department. This committee is made up of several members of the board and I am not certain who is on it but I would guess Nicky McCarter and Bill Smith would be involved since both are former athletes. The board has several committees but this one was added recently. I think members of the board were hearing form a large enough amount of concerned Clemson people to warrant this committee. I understand that some on campus were upset by the forming of the committee but hopefully they will be able to help the athletic department reach its full potential.
Mick,
What's the story behind Coach Harbison's nickname, "Coach Cheese"?
Thanks,
Jonathan
Jonathan,
I think I heard Coach Harbison say it was a childhood nickname but I always assumed it was because he has this huge smile most of the time. BTW-Clemson is lucky to have Charlie and Tammy Harbison. They are terrific people and hope they are here providing their tremendously positive attitude for years to come.
Mickey,
I thought the Boston College game was a very sorry performance. Especially
from Booker, which brings up something I'm surprised no one has talked about. Trevor Booker makes too many mental mistakes. First of all, he tattooed "35" on half his arm. Sure, that's his number at Clemson, but there's no guarantee that will be his number when he turns pro. Not the smartest thing to do.
Several times during his Clemson career, I've seen him "space out", usually right after he misses a shot or makes a mistake. When that happens, he basically misses two plays -- the mistake play and the "space out" play following. Tuesday night I saw it twice. He missed a lay-up, and pouted about it. His lack of recovery and transitioning to defense led to a Boston College fast break and easy basket. Another play, he wanted a foul and didn't get it. His whining and staring at the ref led to another BC fast break.
He does more good than bad, no doubt, but those missed plays are huge when the teams are even. That's gonna be the case for the rest of this season. ACC competition and beyond. You agree?
Kevin
Kevin,
I am a Booker fan so I am biased. I don’t care about his 35 on his arms and will always remember him as #35. I would like to see him play defense without being scared to foul but he is needed on the offensive end. I am a fan of his.
Mickey,
I know you are anti-woo hoo and you spend some time trying to ban it but I have another project for you. Can you please stop Jim Barker from wearing the Tiger mascot uniform and taking the head off in front of the crowds. I saw he did it again at the Game Day deal. Does he not know kids are watching? Please stop the media *****.
Kimberly
Kimberly,
I received a few e-mails on the subject but usually don’t comment on something like this but personally I wish he would not do it either. I have two six-year old nieces that love the Tiger and might not understand. However, as much as I agree, I can’t help you on this one. I don’t think they like me too much over on that side of campus so if I raised too much sand it might have an adverse effect. You should probably just e-mail their office with your concerns. Good luck.
Hey Mickey....
I listen to your show regularly. I remember when Clemson beat #9 UNC, we were chastised for not "acting like we've been there before" by UNC & Gamecock fans. For the UNC fan, I'm enjoying the Tarheels season more than ever. For the Gamecock fans, "Act like you've been there before....or shut the Helll up about us doing it."
Basketball issues....You said you were giving them a pass. I'm not...BC is terrible and shouldn't beat us even without Stitt. Reality is that Clemson is becoming the stepping stone for weaker teams. BC was terrible and we saved their season. GT was terrible, but beat us in the ACC tourney a couple of years ago. WF was terrible and beat us a few years ago. Same in football, Clemson seems to consistently save Friedgen's career at Maryland. This year, we saved SC from a lousy 6-6 season. Upsets happen, but not consistently to the same team without a reason. The analysis's thrown around are pointless because they do not get to the real issue....and, the reason is simple.
Clemson players do not "enjoy" beating down other teams. They act like they've arrived at the first ranking and their play suffers the very next game. They want the accolades, but don't care about actually doing the job. Until Clemson players/coaches actually "enjoy" beating others down regardless of their rankings....We're doomed to first round exits in the ACC & NCAA tourneys and Gaylord or Champs bowls in football.
Mark
Mark,
I think complacency is human nature. Texas gets to number one and loses twice in a row. Kentucky gets to the top spot in the polls and loses its next game. This is not a Clemson issue.
Mickey,
Is Clemson getting new uniforms this year?
Thanks,
Ban the woo hoo committee
Ban the woo hoo committee,
I know you noticed the new pants this past season and I think they will stay the same next season. Also the paw on the helmet was bigger this year and I think that will remain. Dabo says they will have a more traditional jersey next season. I would anticipate no stripes on the jerseys. I think will look like the jerseys of the 1980s and 1990s.
BTW-you guys have convinced me on the woo hoo and I now say “Go Tigers Go Tigers Go!”instead of woo hooing.
Mickey,
Just wanted to remind you and your readers that your buddy and Clemson graduate Wes Long’s Queen’s University team plays on Fox Sports South Saturday at noon. Gonna watch?
The Godfather
Godfather,
Of course I will be watching. Wes has been a friend for a long time and we are so proud. He is the youngest head coach in college basketball and Clemson should be very proud. I hope the Royals will increase their winning streak to three games Saturday.

Way to "Tommy Bowden" Mark's question. Nobody cares about UT or Kentucky-He asked about us and you gave him a cop out excuse. You are only one blog away from writing a good blog. Parity and facilities are the only thing holding you back...

Six-year-olds who wouldn't guess that tiger mascot has a person inside it? Wow.

What? The Tiger has a person in it? You just ruined it for a 30+ person. Oh, the humanity...
