Editor’s Note: I wanted to say sorry about the last two days of blogs. Wednesday was signing day and I got caught up with signing day activities all day and Ryan came into town for the basketball game. We stayed at Littlejohn until over an hour after the game because Ryan wanted to get pictures with the players and Coach Purnell again so we did not get home until after midnight. I left Clemson immediately after the show Thursday for a speaking engagement with the Columbia Clemson club and stayed in Columbia until late in the afternoon to visit with my sister who was at Providence Hospital having foot surgery. Just wanted to apologize for the blog the last two days. Thanks.

Mickey

Mickey,
I've got a question regarding football recruiting. What has happened with the recruiting of Eric Fields? I heard that we have pulled off of him because he had not taken the SAT. You've probably already covered this with the morning show. If he did not qualify why would we not sign and place? Hopefully this is not the same case as the academic review board stuff from a couple of years ago!

Thanks for what you do for Clemson.
Go TIGERS!

Brandon

Brandon,
Players can’t take official visits until they have an SAT or ACT on record. Fields was going to be a long shot to qualify anyway but he should have one on record at least. This was not going to work. To my knowledge this has nothing to do with the AARC.

Mickey,

I was at the Duke/CU game last night. Here are my thoughts on why it was such a great night and a great game to be at!

1. I was with my son (who is a Duke basketball fan of coarse) and we watched Duke get the beat down of the decade together in Littlejohn. We still had a great time together though!

2. The crowd and atmosphere actually changed the momentum of the game at several times. In the first half when the calls were favoring Duke, the crowd was not going for it this time, and I feel willed the ref's into making more even calls due to the booing and loud noise!

3. Oglesby....missing a three, shooting another three, missing a three, hitting threes, missing a dunk, dancing with the students after the game... and so on, it was an up and down game for him...he's a hard worker and I enjoy watching him play.

4. I wonder if Coach K regrets missing out on the talent at Clemson, like Tanner, Oglesby, Grant, etc. He had to feel at his lowest last night watching his team take a beating like that in that atmosphere.

5. The Duke coaching staff walking in like an army before the game...ridiculous, was that actually choreographed? I mean do the Duke coaches practice that, how to actually make their entrance into a gym before the games???

6. Booker's "fada.." shot in the paint. I'm not crazy about his fader shot in the paint...but, hey, it seems to be going in right now!

7. Booker's dunk on top of Paulus!

8. Booker's 3 pointer when the foot was already on their throat...priceless!

9. Again...the atmosphere...from the start of the game with the Clemson Tiger on the scoreboard chasing the Duke bus on the large screen was great to watch and everyone seemed to enjoy that short "skit"...the crowd was so loud, the students were loud, the Rally Cat's looked awesome (as always), the music was good...I mean "Down with OPP"...come on, you can't beat that!

10. Students camping out everywhere, smelling like a cheap beer before the game, dressing like gorillas...the list goes on....great sign the students have bought into this program finally.

DT

DT,
I noticed the Duke coaching thing too. I also noticed Chris Collins having his elbows up and out like an idiot after the game because student rushing the floor. Classy move by Collins. Shame on you for raising a Duke fan. You should have put your foot down. Just kidding. The atmosphere was terrific and it was nice to see Paulus get POSTER-IZED a few times. Great night in Littlejohn. Perhaps my favorite Clemson home game ever.

Mickey,
As I said a couple of weeks back, a real shot at early playing time is the overall number one criteria for most of these high school recruits and we lose sight of that. Forget who won the rival game or which one had a good bowl showing... throw all of that out of the window. It's nice for the fans but apparently is doesn't mean squat to a lot of kids. I hate to bring it up but we all know that S.C is prefect evidence for this principle. In fact, S.C. took it a step further this year and lost all their coaches in the midst of the recruiting battle and still didn't miss a beat. Why? Because at S.C. there is a lot of attrition (hence the big classes every year) and in general, underachievement from their previously recruited 4-star players. The result is a darn good shot at getting on the field early. It doesn't hurt that they make it onto the SEC stage to boot.

Clemson has solid, if not very good talent in many areas and this new group albeit small, will give depth to the athleticism and character of our team. I guess the nay-sayers will continue to be nay-sayers and their various forecasts may turn true, but a sprinkle of optimism and hope would surely make their lives more enjoyable.

Continued blessings to Ryan and all those seeking prayers. Please find a way to get some form of update on occasion from those requests that you post. Whether we like the answers from God or not, He is good and always at work.

One additional thought on the "playing time" principal below. The elite football schools with a winning tradition (fill in the blanks but there are less than a dozen), are the exception to this principal. They are the few schools where a great high school recruit will delightfully go, willing to accept the probability of sitting the bench his first year, because he gets to put that uniform on.

My thought wouldn't have been complete without including this.

Thanks for being a recipient and ear for such rambling thoughts since my wife doesn't care to hear it.

Bobby

Bobby,
My condolences to your wife. Just kidding. Also thanks for the kinds words about Ryan. I think playing time is important but Ohio State, Texas, Florida and Southern Cal sign the best every year. I would say those kids believe they will play early at those powers too. I want a kid who knows he will have to compete and is not scared of competition.

Mickey,

Wanted to get your opinion. I just saw that we signed Darrell Smith out of Gasden, AL. After watching some of his highlights, it's obvious that he is an excellent blocker from the TE/Hback position. He also seems to have some pass catching abilities. Do you think there is a possibility of sometime in the future, using someone with his skill sets in a fullback type role? I know Chad Diehl seems to have similar skills (very fundamental blocker, some ball skills). Do you think this type of position could play a larger role in our offense with inexperience at QB and WR next year?
Wes

Wes,
I go back to the South Carolina game and see how good this offense works with a fullback. I think the fullback is a vital position. I love a lead blocker especially in short-yardage situations. The perfect fullback can also catch the ball out of the backfield. I think any team would be wise to utilize the fullback more often. With Diehl and Shatley, Clemson has two good ones.

Good morning.
After the disappointments of this recruiting year from an overall standpoint (because there are some players that got away that I think would have been big contributors at CU), next year is huge as you have mentioned. Will you list some of the big targets out there for next year. In my opinion, Lattimore has to be major priority. He is one that we can ill afford to lose. I believe he is the best back on campus as soon as he gets off the bus. You can build an offensive around talent like that. Any early gut feeling on where we stand with him.
Thanks for your input.
Bill

Bill,
Some of the top juniors in South Carolina this season are:
QB-Dylan Thompson--Boiling Springs, Chas Dodd—Byrnes
RB-Marcus Lattimore—Byrnes, Mustafa Green—Irmo
WR-Martavis Bryant—Hanna, Torian Richardson—Byrnes, Jazz King—Byrnes
OL-Eric Mack—Calhoun County, Kalon Davis—Chester, A.J. Cann—Bamberg-Ehrhardt
DE-Corey Miller—Byrnes, Brandon Willis—Byrnes, Dexter Morant--Manning
DT-Kelcy Quarles—Greenwood
LB-Jake Nicolopulos—Hanna
DB-DeAndre Hopkins—Daniel, Nick Jones—Byrnes, Joe Craig—Gaffney

Dear Mickey,
Now that football season is starting to slow down with the end of the Super Bowl and Signing Day, I thought it might be time to discuss other, less pressing issues. I thought I might share my thoughts and gather a few of yours. I am not sure why I thought of it. Maybe, I was listening to a game on the radio. Perhaps, it was when I came across his picture in one of Tony Barnhardt’s book. Maybe, it was all this Hall of Fame talk. Anyway, I was thinking about Jim Phillips. His voice is one that any Clemson fan (over ten) knows and misses and I mean any Clemson fan. I say this not because Jim Phillips called an honest football game but because he called every Clemson game. Whether, you were a football fanatic, hoops (men's or women's) die-hard, or baseball junkie, one voice was heard, Jim Phillips. For those who couldn't be there and for those who were, Jim Phillips kept it real. Fans knew if Clemson was giving it their all on that day. Jim gave credit when credit was due. If Clemson was loafing, Jim would be the first to tell the fans. He was a straight shooter. I cannot speak for Jim Phillips the man but I can speak for Jim Phillips the broadcaster. There may have not been a better one around. According to Clemson's athletic profile...

http://clemsontigers.cstv.com/genrel/phillips_jim00.html

"Jim Phillips was the legendary voice of the Clemson Tigers for 36 years. Phillips came to Clemson in 1968 and broadcast his first Tiger football game on September 21, 1968, a 20-20 tie between Clemson and Wake Forest. Phillips broadcast his 400th Clemson football game on August 20, 2003 against Georgia, just over a week before his tragic death. He was the only ACC play-by-play announcer to broadcast his school's football, basketball, baseball, and women's basketball games. Over his career, he broadcast over 2,000 Clemson sporting events.

Phillips also served as host of the Clemson football and basketball coach's shows for many years. He broadcast his 1000th Clemson men's basketball game at the 2002 ACC Tournament in Charlotte. He missed only one broadcast of a Clemson men's basketball game in Littlejohn Coliseum during his time at Clemson, a period of almost 35 years.

Phillips was one of the most honored broadcasters in his field. He was a five-time recipient of the South Carolina Broadcaster of the Year award. In 1992 he was presented the Master Broadcaster Award by the South Carolina Association of Broadcasters, the highest honor presented by that organization. In 1998 he received the Skeeter Francis Award from the Atlantic Coast Conference Sportwriters Association for his contributions to ACC athletics. He was the first radio personality to receive the award.

Phillips was inducted into the Clemson Hall of Fame in 1992. He passed away in September of 2003, just days after calling Clemson vs. Furman football game."

Based on this information, I would submit to you and Tiger Nation that Jim Phillips would be a great candidate for Clemson's Ring of Honor. Frank Howard has the hat. Bob Bradley has the typewriter. Perhaps, a head set or microphone would be an appropriate icon for ...well, an icon.

Any IPTAY member can submit a nomination. I would suggest any one who shares the sentiments feel free to nominate this man.

Mickey, perhaps, I am late. Perhaps, this ship already left the harbor. Maybe, the ball is already rolling. Regardless, I think that Jim Phillips's name belongs in the Valley, where even now some might still hear his voice, as the Tigers come running down the hill.

Thanks for your time,
Cameron

Cameron,
I appreciate your e-mail. I agree Jim deserves the honor. I don’t think that ship has sailed and would suggest others who believe he deserves it to take action. Jim was a friend and a prince of a guy. I would say Jim was a Clemson man that deserves that honor.

Mickey … Hi!
I heard parts of several of your shows early last week referencing the poor student attendance at basketball games. You are generally correct, but someone needs to step forward from the athletic administration and promote CU basketball on an ongoing manner if we are to increase the overall level of fan support that OP and the ever-improving players deserve.

I’m not going to “pile on” the student issues, since that has been pretty much covered by you and others. We know what short-term changes need to occur with respect to scheduling, except that one person needs to step forward and lead this effort. Bring together a representative from each of the organizations with potential conflicts at the appropriate time, and make the changes necessary to minimize conflicts that limit student attendance at all home games.

Beyond this, Clemson Basketball … up until recently, an oxymoron … must be made into a “commodity”! I don’t believe that anyone in the current athletic administration has the imagination and/or ability to do this. Permit me to cite just a few examples here:

First, every year, we receive the same printed materials, and rarely is there a well-promoted published goal or inspirational for the team. Same old, same old … tired stuff!

Second, this year I gave up my season tickets because it was difficult for my wife and me to drive to Clemson during the week, even leaving work a bit earlier; park downtown; have some dinner; then drive to Littlejohn and park again for the game. On several occasions I e-mailed the athletic department asking them to set up some café tables (with orange and white umbrellas, etc.) and chairs in the four corners of Littlejohn, so that we could actually sit down and have a hamburger, hot dog and soda without having to use the trash cans (near the condiment bars) as table tops. Trash cans as tabletops … inviting, huh? The experience could be even better if a few flat screens were hung near these areas, so you wouldn’t feel so disconnected from what’s going on in the arena. In fact, if this evolved, why not do more to formalize something like a pre-game barbeque in order to “lengthen” the “basketball experience”? Attendees pre-pay so that it’s not a hit-or-miss financial risk. The Administrations response? NONE! In fact, when we attended the Saturday evening game with ECU, on January 4th, which attracted a crowd of maybe 8,000 or 8,500, only every other concession stand was actually open.

Third, I am intrigued by the odd concept of Purnell’s Posse! Purnell’s Posse? Purnell’s Posse? What in God’s name does this have to do with anything? If a posse was to be a group of Clemson fans that supported OP and his team, why not Purnell’s Pinheads? Purnell’s Pessimists? Purnell’s Plurality? Why Posse? A family of tigers is referred to as an “Ambush” or a “Streak”. Why not then, “Purnell’s Ambush”? This is something that could be built upon and further developed. Purnell’s Posse! What dolt thought this up on the spur of the moment, with absolutely no thought to building a solid base and marketing tradition.

Finally, up through last year, a mini-cam followed the team coming down the stairs from the meeting rooms to the arena floor, with James Mays always meeting/greeting every player on the last landing. This was great! But it is no more!

Whatever needs to be done to push the students should be done, but the athletic department should spend a few bucks making the basketball game experience much more of a commodity than it has ever been thought of before.

If we do anything less, and OP goes, shame on us!
Paul

Paul,
I agree with your concepts. Last year I had good conversations with the staff about making Clemson basketball more of an event. Food is a major part of that. Tailgating might be tougher because of the weather but food, music, family fun, kids activities, former Clemson players for autographs, etc. We need to make this an event that lasts more than two hours. I will bring this up with the staff and update the blog later. Thanks again.

Mick,

I am a big fan of the blog. Thanks.

In the mailbag this week, someone asked if you could start writing about the students that do show up for basketball. One of the things mentioned was talking about the kid who is always in the front row wearing the Tree Rollins jersey. I have been curious about him. Who is he? He is not just at basketball games either. I have seen him on camera at plenty of football games. And last night, there he was behind the Clemson bench at VT. Is he associated with the team in some way? I would be interested in reading about him.

Thanks,

Jon

Jon,
No, he is a student but a big basketball fan. I will try to write a blog about him in the near future. Thanks for the idea.

Mickey,
As a basketball coach for many years, I learned through experience to have my assistant coaches help me to look at the big picture during a game. If the press is providing more offense for the other team than it is providing turnovers and points for our team, then we needed to get out of the press and either not use it at all or to use it in spots as a surprise attack.

I'm impressed that Coach Purnell got out of the press last night (VT). There have been times in the past where he has frustrated me with him staying in the press when it was providing easy dunks and baskets for the opposing team without providing steals and baskets for the Tigers. There are some teams like UNC, Wake Forest and obviously Virginia Tech that thrives on our press. Congratulations to him for being willing to change tactics in order to win the game! The Tigers played incredibly well the last 15 minutes of last night’s game, but Clemson would not have won without changing strategies.-Thankful
David

David,
Coach Purnell has a terrific staff and that was the right move at the time. The press was a tremendous success against Duke. You are right that it works better against some teams than others but this Clemson team is not a one-trick pony and can beat you with the press or without it. In the end, the press is one of the things that is the identity of Clemson basketball though.

I happen to like OP'sPosse very much, and after the duke game it seems that the media think it "catchy" as well. I do agree also that while it will take some doing, something needs to be done to raise CU basketball to a higher platform.

I have asked several times and have yet to see any real response....what is Clemson going to do to keep Purnell, and what is Purnell's mindset? You make your mark on inside sources, so what are you hearing?

I have known for 2 months that Purnell is on Arizona's short list, CNNSI.com wrote about it a couple weeks ago, and Clemson's recent wins and 5-2 record make it more and more likely that Arizona, or another big-time basketball program, will put Purnell at the top of the list. What is Clemson going to do, what do they need to do?

Paul must be to old, to young, or stuck on some AM radio station. Because "You Down With OPP" has alot of marketing potential

The "Oliver Purnells' Posse" signs are quite creative, and one of my favorite things about the experience in Littlejohn. The "O.P.P." acronym is easy to appreciate on those signs, and anyone familiar with hip hop music in the early 90's knows that it comes from the Naughty By Nature song. The chorus is "You down wit' O.P.P.?" It's very well known by many people (but obviously not the author of the email above). In the original song it stands for "Other People's Property" but to us it is obviously "Oliver Purnell's Posse." I was delighted to hear that the actual song was played in the arena for the Duke game. Awesome!

In the "O.P.P." song from Naughty By Nature, the second "P" stands for something more naughty by nature than "property".

The table idea inside Littlejohn is EXCELLENT ! Create eating areas in 2 or 4 corners of the place would be excellent !
