Mickey,
I remember being very optimistic when I had heard CU signed a 7-2 center (Catalin Baciu) especially after reading of his rankings from the scouting tabloids.
But now that we are 15 games into the season and the kid is not playing, it has me wondering if another scholarship has been wasted like the one on the other almost-seven footer (Karolis Petrukonis), who is a junior and is definitely not an ACC caliber player. Just wanted to know your thoughts and input.

Regards,
Bill

Bill,
Baciu is already ahead of Petrukonis. Baciu will develop into a post presence but it just takes time to develop big men. Look at what the staff did with Raymond Sykes over a four year career. Look how much better Jerai Grant is this year already. It just takes time. Baciu has a lot of skills and has a bright future. He runs well. He has good hands and he finishes well. He will have to get stronger and he will have to learn the system but those things will happen in time.

Hi Mickey,

Thanks for a good blog today. In some ways I like today's type of blog that catches the reader up on several different topics. A few comments and questions. I really hope CJ stays. I do not think he will be a first round pick and there is simply a big, big difference between being a first rounder and anything less than that. Hope we get Kevin Steele's name on a contract soon. Will Coach Swinney look for a veteran offensive coordinator or stick with Napier? Thanks!

Kirk

Kirk,
I think we will know something on C.J. by Monday. Steele was announced today. I think Napier and Dabo will call plays next season.

Mickey,

I'm very proud of the improvement in the Clemson basketball team. One question: Although it is a couple of weeks away, could the Tigers forfeit the game at UNC this year to avoid the embarrassment of another loss there? A forfeit might be less painful.

David

David,
Remember last year when I said we need to just forfeit and just practice instead. Maybe they could visit a children’s hospital instead. You and I both know the refs will not allow Clemson to beat UNC in Chapel Hill.

Mickey,

I thought you might be interested in knowing how the "Home of the Gamecocks" otherwise known as WNKT-FM 107.5 in Columbia is spinning Clemson's coaching situation. Every day since the introduction of Dabo as Clemson's head coach this radio station's on-air people have proclaimed that "He won't last more than a year or two!" or "He really could be a one and done deal!" or "With his apparent intention of him and Napier running the offense, he is in real trouble!" and, of course, "It is a done deal that CJ Spiller will not be back next year!". In addition, they have been very careful to be critical of Clemson's potential for next year and say that alone could spell the end for Dabo. That a new quarterback, no Spiller, no proven help on the O-line, losing D-backs, Davis and Kelly gone, etc. point to the end of Clemson football as a serious program. That they do not believe the current coaching staff can make anything of the returning players, talented though they may be, and indeed cannot get the players to play up to their potential.

Well, I don't believe Dabo is "one and done", or two or three or whatever. In fact, I believe Dabo will be there long after Steve "Superior" is gone from USC. Somehow, they keep forgetting that, as the billboard put it so well, "Our wide receivers coach beat your legend!" What I see here is very simply an attempt on the part of the "Home of the Gamecocks" to influence recruiting. I am not sure if there is a violation in there, but that station is on USC's payroll and they are making remarks that could be construed as recruiting. Doesn't that, in effect, give them many more than the allowed number of contacts and couldn't it also have violated the "dead period" rule?

I sure do wish we could get a sports station in Columbia that was even impartial to either school. Even the local sports station that broadcasts Clemson games is, the rest of the time, all about USC. It is absolutely sickening! On the positive side however, it can be very funny to listen to the spin/rationalization/excuses Gamecock fans can come up with as to why their athletic programs can't beat Clemson. "But, just wait till next year!"

Crank up the watts on 104.9 and aim a directional transmit antenna toward Columbia so we can hear some real sportscasters!

Have a Tiger day,
Johnny

Johnny,

All local sports talk radio is biased. I have not heard the Columbia stations too much but I would expect the same there. You can listen to our station on the internet at www.wccpfm.com. BTW-How did Dabo and Napier’s play calling look in the South Carolina game?

Mickey,

I heard the caller say that some teams aren't interested in being at certain bowls, or that some teams aren't interested in playing certain teams, and I'm not saying he's wrong, but what in the world are these teams thinking.

In the Alabama example, they went from 6 - 6 last year to the SUGAR BOWL! I mean come on, if you make a BCS game, what more motivation do you need?? Utah winning that game places them on a higher pedestal next season, while making Alabama look bad doing it.

Of course...everyone knows what settles all of these issues....

Can we get a playoff??

Thanks

Billy

Billy,
If Alabama is not motivated, that is not Utah’s fault. I think a playoff is coming. I think it will happen fairly soon.

Mickey,
I love the blog. You’re a regular part of my day. Work is hectic enough that a few minutes reading about the Tigers or smiling at Ryan’s progress is a great break. Please pass along our best wishes. With regard to your prediction about the Tigers in Columbia, I think you were right on target. Exactly what you predicted happened to start the game and Downey’s performance was also in line with your column. What also happened and wasn’t in the blog was the OP factor. First, was his early and timely time out. The team needed to focus and a few minutes with the coach in their face brought some of that. He also brought guys off the bench early and they came with more intensity than the starters. OP is also responsible for recruiting a deep athletic and disciplined team. That’s exactly what was needed. They stayed with the game plan, brought the pressure, got some turnovers, made some deep shots, and made their free throws.

The team has more than it has in the past. They have depth not only in terms of the number of kids who can come off the bench and play, but also in their heart. They never considered rolling over. They kept coming and kept their confidence. The 3 pointer that Young hit to push the margin back to 10 was key, but so were several of the 3’s that TO hit. And speaking of Young, WOW! Given his high school hype, I was a little disappointed that we haven’t seen more from him. I guess that shows what I don’t know about college basketball. He played within himself and made everyone else on the floor better. Can you imagine if he improves as much as Ray Sykes has over the next four years?
Trey

Trey,
Thanks for the nice words about Ryan. Clemson basketball is has created quite the buzz. I love the win in Columbia because this team took USC’s best shot and still pulled away from the Gamecocks. Young was the difference in my opinion. His quickness and the huge three was the difference. It is nice to put him in the game and not see a drop off. It is also nice to put in Jerai Grant and not see any drop off. OP is a genius and what he has done has been amazing.

Mickey,
I have heard Clemson has a top rated QB in town this weekend (Tajh Boyd?) Not sure of his exact name - but I am sure you know who I am talking about. What are our chances of signing this guy - also, is there any truth that Bryce Brown is also interested in Clemson? I have heard that if we land the Qb that we will land the Rb. You know recruiting - so I trust you have answers.

Thanks Mickey, love the show.

Josh

Josh,

Boyd is not coming this weekend but may make it next weekend. I think the Tigers are a long shot for him. Brown has been committed to Miami, where his brother plays. I think it is a long shot but I have been around recruiting long enough to know that nothing is ever a done deal. The staff has to make up a bunch of ground on both and need to get Boyd on campus next week to have any shot.

Mickey,
I wonder if you can provide any information about the following redshirt players:
1. What do you hear about the position planned next year for Rendrick Taylor? Seems to me it would help him to lose some weight and some muscle, maybe run more and lift weights less.
2. Do you know if Jamie Cumbie is gaining any of the weight he will need if he plays inside on defense next year.
3. What is the outlook for Spencer Adams for next year? I have heard he needs to get bigger and stronger.
4. Has Brandon Clear made any progress? He appeared to be a promising wide receiver after his redshirt year, and then didn’t show up the past year.
5. Will Matt Sanders help us next year at center? I have read that he has been a pleasant surprise as far as his progress is concerned.

I know this is a lot of questions. Maybe you can give some information on your blog for questions like this.
Tony

Tony,
Thanks for the excellent questions.
1. Taylor had a bunch of family issues back in Bennettsville this past year. If he can get his family stuff in order then he may become a factor again. I am not sure what position but I have always thought he was better as a wide out.

2. Cumbie looked a little bigger but he still has time to go up in weight this year. I think he will be energized and look for good things from him in 2009.

3. Adams is recovering from ACL surgery. He will need to continue to add weight and strength but he runs so well that he will have a chance to make a big contribution at safety. Clemson has not had this kind of speed at safety in a long time.

4. I think Clear made some progress and will get in the rotation but others have too. Jaron Brown has the staff excited. Bryce McNeal has a ton of talent and could also get in the mix.

5. Sanders is a player that the staff really likes. He plays with a nasty streak. I think Cloy moves to center but Sanders will have a chance this spring to impress and could challenge.

Mickey,

With all the talk about our new coaches, recruiting, and who will enter the draft, I find myself far more concerned with the development of the considerable talent we already have. I am concerned with the positions we are putting players regardless of their size. Specifically, I am concerned with how our coaches have moved Coty Sensabaugh to CB. At 6-1, he seems to be too tall to have much chance of covering a speedy receiver, which would seem to create a mis-match. I've seen him really hit people on special teams, which seems like his talent would be better utilized at Safety.

Also, I've noticed that Marcus Gilchrist has moved from CB to Safety. At 5-11, and with so much speed, wouldn't he be better served to play CB? I also watched him get burned at Safety several times at the Gator Bowl. I know we have depth at CB, and not much at safety, but wouldn't it make more sense to switch these 2 players?

Byron Maxwell is another player that I would be curious to see at Safety. He is also 6-1 and may be one of the biggest hitters on defense.

Another thing I have noticed is that when Byron and Coty are on the field at CB at the same time, we always play zone, perhaps because they can't play man because of their size. Isn't this a tip-off to opposing offenses that we will be playing zone (not that we play much man defense, anyway.)

Maybe I'm being too critical, but it seems to me that we could put our players in better position to succeed in college, and perhaps the pros. I'm hoping the new DC will address these things, among others. What are your thoughts about this?

Mark

Mark,

I don’t think you are being too critical and I think you raise good points. The new defensive scheme will dictate a little of where each guys plays next season. Also Charlie Harbison will get a longer look from his secondary this spring. The immediate need in the secondary is to replace the two safeties and I think they would like to get their best 11 on the field. I think these issues will be a key to the spring.

Mickey,
I hope you enjoyed your Christmas and New Year's celebrations, despite a Tiger loss in Jax... I know I did.

There are so many opinions about what went wrong at the bowl game. Many said we should have kept running the ball. I didn't see much success for most of the game, except for one drive. With all the guys Nebraska put in the box they forced us to put the game in the QB's hands and we simply had the inferior QB. I'm not bashing Harper, he was just a mediocre player that made some nice passes but made very poor decisions as well... and not just on the last drive. Nebraska's QB - I think we all knew - was a much better QB coming into the game and he proved it during the game. On whole it was a good effort by the Tigers vs. a solid team in a game decided by who had the best QB, plain and simple. We can only hope that in Korn or Parker we have a Ganz-type QB on the horizon... tough, smart, gutsy, and able to create plays on his feet. Can you imagine that?

As I've said before I think quite a few T-Net posters take Clemson football way too seriously (don't have a life) and/or are simply not very intelligent. I saw some T-netter unhappy with everything about our performance in Jax saying, "this is CLEMSON... we're better than this!" I'm not sure which football program he's been watching but I can't recall being "better than this" over the last 15+ years. I'm a proud Clemson alum and I think we've got some nice traditions, but the 80's were a long time ago. We are NOT a football power but miraculously we have a little credibility left-over from those days long ago and for the wonderful game-day setting we still enjoy at Clemson. Truth is we are what we are... mediocre and sometimes good. Can we be great again? Sure, but please let's not act like we're Southern Cal or Texas, certainly not before we get to and win a conference title, never mind a national title.

Finally, can I just say what a moron some of these "fans" are if you don't support a new coach in the beginning of his tenure? One has the right to say whatever they want, but it doesn't protect them from being a moron. Nothing positive will come from publicly bad-mouthing Swinney's coaching decisions or making fun of his reactions on the field. If you want to think it or tell your wife or girlfriend go ahead, but a few players and potential RECRUITS actually read this nonsense and most of them are under the age of 21... that is, still forming perceptions of Clemson, the world, and themselves. If Swinney produces a couple of losing seasons then you can echo your thoughts, but give the man a chance for crying out loud. How would you like your job evaluations to pour in after just 3 months on the job?

Go Tigers!

Bobby

Bobby,

Clemson did not play well in the bowl game but I have not heard that much criticism yet. I agree with you on many points. Let’s give the staff a chance to fix things and see where the go over the long haul. I think this spring is big to the future of the program. Good points.
