Friday E-Mail Bag
Each Friday I publish your comments and answer your questions. To submit a comment or questions please e-mail me at mickeyplyler@hotmail.com.

Mick,
Can you tell me if any of these guys are candidates?
1. Stoops
2. Grobe
3. Patterson
4. Leach
5. Rich Rod
6. Brian Kelly
Thanks.
Carl

Carl,
I cannot say for sure if any of these coaches are legitimate candidates but I have formed opinions of their candidacy based upon information I have received.
1. Stoops-I hear rumors like everyone else but I have nothing solid. I just think this is such a long shot.
2. Grobe-I do get indications that there is mutual interest from both sides.
3. Patterson-I have no contacts here and really have not heard his name recently.
4. Leach-I think his name may arise after the season but he has his hands full right now with this season. I also think he is higher on Tennessee’s list.
5. Rich Rodriguez-I think there may be some interest from both sides after the season. I would keep an eye on this situation.
6. Brian Kelly-I have no contacts with him either but he seems to be higher on Tennessee’s list too.

Mr. Plyler,

I need help with ESPN GamePlan. I moved to Vermont to start a career. The only negative is that I don't get to watch the games for free anymore (the cold air is starting to count too). I ordered the ESPN GamePlan so I could see Clemson play. Last weekend the game was a blackout although Raycom didn't inform ESPN to blackout in the game in my area. Even more Raycom informed me the ACC territories are the only areas that get blacked out and Vermont isn't one.
I've tried to contact ESPN the whole week and I've been on hold for 4 hours since Monday. I'm worried about this weekend.

I wrote the Clemson Athletic Department and they were diligent and gracious, but they couldn't get the information that was needed to explain the blackout or to ensure it won't happen again in my area (Winooski, VT).

I'm asking for your help to find out about this weekend. I was disappointed last weekend and I don't want that feeling again. I see the tv map, but I don't trust it anymore.

The kicker is that I can't get AT&T or Verizon up here so ESPN360 is out of the question too.

God Bless,

Josh

Josh,
I have never heard of an ACC game being blacked out in Vermont. I have no idea why that would be the case. This weekend’s game is a little different too. This is a split broadcast. Viewers in North Carolina will get the UNC-NC State game while most of the rest of the areas will get Clemson-UVA. I have no idea what you will get this weekend. I am just helpless in what direction to shoot you to.

Mickey,

The reason that Jim Grobe has no intention of going to a school like Clemson is easy to understand. At WFU he can have a losing season here and there and not get fired, but that is not the case at the Clemson's of the world. He would never be allowed to redshirt as many players for the future as he has done at Wake because people don't have that kind of patience. He has job security in Winston-Salem that he would never have at bigger football schools.

If Clemson doesn't hire Swinney, then we can expect USC, UGA, and other competitors to go after him and Napier. Are we willing to let them go, and then have to compete against them against one of our rivals?
David

David,
My people tell me that Grobe does have interest in listening to Clemson. I am not saying he will be the guy but I think he is interested in interviewing. He was very close to taking the Arkansas job last season. I don’t think that job is all that different than Clemson.

Hi,

Given the posts on TNet, it would be great to see an article or a Mickey blog on the fact that a "big name" coach does not guarantee success - it guarantees a big salary, but not success. Saban is the exception, not the rule. I can think of several big name guarantees without doing any research: TBowden @ Clemson, CWeiss @ ND, Al Groh @ UVA, SOS @ SC, Lou @ SC, Deitzel @ SC, RRod @ Mich, etc. There is no guarantee so the best route is to trust TDP who actually has a track record of hiring good coaches. Would make a great story and hopefully inject some rationality into the discussion.
Troy

Troy,
Good point. I wonder how many schools lost the press conference but went on to win on the field. Big names are not much more of a sure bet. Every candidate brings risk.

Mickey
These HC search opinions are almost too much to bear. Is it as painful for you as it is me to read the T-Net posts and realize how ignorant some of our fans are? Since when is hiring a coach a matter of democracy, as if our vote counts? Whether you have faith in TDP or not, it doesn't really matter because it's not our call and our opinion matters even less. Fans need to sit back and enjoy these last two weeks of football, and treat the announcement of the new HC as Christmas morning. I'm excited about the hire whomever it is because it means new hope and something different than Bowden (even if it's Dabo).

As I believe you've noted, the fans seem to divide themselves over everything and now this. T-Net poster, it sounds like if your man for HC isn't the chosen one then you're going to be critical from day one. Have fun with your miserable life. I - and hopefully most Tiger faithful - am going to enjoy watching the changes and seeing how and if we advance. If I want to be critical of the new HC I'll at least wait until year three of his four-year contract.

Finally, finding the "right fit" has been mentioned by both Barker and TDP, and that means a lot of things at Clemson and being in the South. Living and recruiting in the southeast requires one to consider the component of one's faith when making a selection. To think otherwise is simply naive. The HC doesn't have to wear it on his sleeve like Bowden, but it is a factor here. No matter how successful Clemson becomes, the vast majority of our recruits will be from the Bible Belt and that can't be ignored. Spiller, Harper, and now JK Jay are just a few examples of kids who made (or are making) a decision largely on the criteria of the HC and his faith.

Bobby

Bobby,
Good e-mail. I agree. Rich Rodriguez was a great fit at West Virginia but an awful one at Michigan. Every job requires a different person with different skills. Clemson is no different.

Mickey,
A caller a couple minutes ago stated that Dabo isn't a candidate for any head coaching job, right? Well the reason is because no one really knows anything about him except us!
Say I have a business and I need to hire someone as vice president, people keep telling me that there's this young and smart guy out there that would be perfect for the job. But if I can't ever get him in there to interview for the job, I would never know anything about him. THAT'S THE REASON THAT NO ONE HAS DABO LISTED FOR A JOB ANYWHERE ELSE, CAUSE HE HASN'T INTERVIEWED FOR ANY HEAD COACHING JOBS AND NO ONE KNOWS ANYTHING ABOUT HIM, EXCEPT.........CLEMSON!

If Clemson hires Dabo, I trust that they seen something in him to give him a legitimate shot at being the Head Coach at Clemson. People just need to trust in Terry Don Phillips and let him make the coaching decision!

I agree with you as well. I couldn’t care less what the national perception would be. Clemson needs to hire the man that they feel is right for their program. Good points.

Rich Rod? Really? Who will pay his buyout and how long would he possibly stay? I did not have a problem with him leaving WVU for UM but I would have to question his loyalty if he hopped from WVU to UM to Clemson in a three year period.

You people with your Dabo obsession kill me! The man was in real estate before TB hired him because they were friends. Just like TB hired his brother-in-law, and Brad Scott. The Bowdens take care of the Bowdens first, their employers 2nd!! That was part of TB's failure. He hired based on friends & family, NOT the BEST coaches he could get like other programs!!

Posted by flatiger66 on November 21, 2008 at 02:04 PM EST #

Dabo isn't getting interest from other schools because other programs use their heads and logic, not their heart, to run their program. You don't go from position coach to head coach, or even coordinator at a big school, without paying your dues and proving yourself. Just like you don't step out of grad school with an MBA and become a CEO or VP. You work your way up. You start as a GA, then a position coach, then when your coordinator gets hired away you get promoted to his job, then finally after years of success at one school, or moving around as a coordinator and proving yourself in a few spots, THEN you get your shot to be a head coach.

Posted by flatiger66 on November 21, 2008 at 02:04 PM EST #

Yes, Danny Ford did it, but that is incredibly rare and Danny was a special coach. Dabo may be special, but he isn't ready or proven. He'll get his chance one day, just not now at Clemson. This isn't 1978. THe money involved is astronomical now compared to then. The stakes are much much higher today than 30 years ago! There is far far less room for error now than ever before. There are far fewer scholarships, far less time allowed for teaching & coaching, and the university is hurting for money and NEEDS the athletic department to be a source of revenue more than ever. Which means we need to hire the BEST guy for the job. A provn head coach that will excite the fan base, IPTAY, TV executives, bowl scouts, and recruits. If you think that's Dabo you need to go get an MRI because you fell on your head and have brain damage!!

Posted by flatiger66 on November 21, 2008 at 02:07 PM EST #

I like Dabo too, but he is NOT ready for this, and he is too big of a risk! NO, there are no guarantees, every coach has pros & cons, every hire is a gamble with calculated risk, but like TDP said, you can make smart hires that minimize the risk! Dabo is NOT a smart hire!

Posted by flatiger66 on November 21, 2008 at 02:08 PM EST #

Say we hire Dabo, because he would be cheaper, but if he fails, he is going to cost CU tens of millions in lost opportunity money and millions more in REAL losses! And how long do you give Dabo? 2, 3, 4 years? It's been proven it takes at least two seasons to turn teams around even by the best, but say we only show potential under Dabo like TB, you guys will keep saying "Dabo is the man, just give him more time". Does that sound familiar?

Posted by flatiger66 on November 21, 2008 at 02:10 PM EST #

Lubbock is a dump and has NOTHING Clemson would trade for, and TT is in a much harder conference and more difficult recruiting environment with none of the things CU has to offer, yet look at where TT is after 9 years with Leach and look at where we are after 10 with TB. TB was hired based on 1 year at Tulane and his pedigree. that's it! And we now know it was RichRod behind the success. So we hire Dabo it will be like keeping TB. He does NOT have the clout or respect to hire a Top 20 staff. Proven coaches are not making a lateral move to work under a fresh MBA graduate!! And every year after that CU will fall further & further behind. Then when we finally fire Dabo in a teary Tommy West moment, we'll look back and say man we were stupid and now the next guy has to come in and start from scratch, whereas had we gotten a proven guy in 2008 all he had to do was fix the OL.

Posted by flatiger66 on November 21, 2008 at 02:11 PM EST #

And you guys are dreaming if you think some SEC or ACC school is going to hire Dabo as an OC if we don't give him the job. Where do you morons get these ideas? Chuck Amato & Brad Scott were National Championship coordinators, among the best in the game. They got their HC opportunities and both ended up fired, and the best jobs they've had since are as position coaches on the friends & family hiring plan of the Bowdens. Yet you think Dabo, after being rescued by TB from real estate, and a few jobs as an interim HC with an under .500 record is suddenly going to be a hot commodity as a HC or OC at a BCS conference school? I want what you crack heads are smoking!

Posted by flatiger66 on November 21, 2008 at 02:15 PM EST #

It's crap like this that makes other schools fans wet themselves laughing at us! We are a joke for keeping TB a few years too long, but we'll be an even bigger joke if we hire Dabo. Other schools' fans WANT us to hire Dabo. That should be a wake up call right there! Nobody wants to see us get RichRod or Mike Leach, I can promise you that!

Posted by flatiger66 on November 21, 2008 at 02:16 PM EST #

Troy ..... NO, there are NO guarantees, EVERY hire is a gamble, but right now, the right thing, the smart thing, the least risky thing to do is hire a PROVEN head coach. NOT a big name. Those are separate ideas.

TB, Groh, & Weiss were BIG names, but NOT proven big time college coaches!

SOS, Lou, Deitzel were big names AND proven, but all past their prime and not prepared for how bad the USC situation truly is!! USC's problem IS continually thinking a name only will get it done.

RRod, like Leach, has been phenominally successful everywhere they hae been, And most people realize Michigan was in bad shape and doesn't have the players for RR's system. IF RR stays there a few more years MI will own the Big 12, count on it! If he leaves, he'll be a HUGE success wherever he goes!! Count on it!!

How long will flatiger66's conversation with himself go on?

Posted by Orange Julius on November 21, 2008 at 02:32 PM EST #

Bobby, PLEASE get your head out your rear end and your bible!! Do you know Larry Shyatt is Jewish? Or that Leach is a Mormon (which IS Christian BTW!!) I dare you to name ONE top 20 coach other than Richt or BBowden, that the average person knows their religion. No one knows because no one but you evangelicals in the upstate care about that crap! And few schools care about this "fit" nonsense like Clemson. That is prejudicial, provincial, backwards BS! It's a buzz word for redneck & backwards thinking! The overwhelming majority of CU grads are NOT in the Tri-County area of the upstate. They aren't evangelicals. They are educated progressive people that want to win and be proud of CU, and don't care if the next coach is white, black, green, Catholic, Mormon, Jew, or Christian. They just want to win, and win the right way! Some of you folks need to travel outside the border of the upstate and see the real world outside your little bubble!!

Posted by flatiger66 on November 21, 2008 at 02:47 PM EST #

And my last post. - BTW, Orange J., I wouldn't have to do this if you could type more than 1000 words per post. - Anyway .... To whomever said they'd question Richrod's loyalty if he came here, I wouldn't. Sometimes people make mistakes and take jobs and relocate and it just wasn't what was best for you & your family. That's part of business, coaching, & life. You think Florida questioned Urban Myer's loyalty? They were his 3rd school in 4 years. Think Bama fans care about Saban's loyalty? I'd take RichRod in a heartbeat. He & his family love it here and we should of fired TB and hired RR a few years ago. It's never too late to do the right thing! And RichRod would most probably coach here till he retired. Sound loyal enough to you? Does to me!

flatiger66...you are a moron and a disgrace to Clemson University.

Posted by Clemsondds on November 21, 2008 at 11:46 PM EST #

really? based on what? every word i wrote is fact, please explain why and how i'm wrong?

name one school that would interview dabo to be head coach or offensive coordinator if he is not our head coach?

if dabo was a wr coach, turned interim head coach at another school, how many people on here would be saying ... man that dabo has heart and potential, i sure hope tdp hires him. lol. that is insane and anyone that suggested it would be laughed off tnet.

you dabo lovers have no idea how stupid you look to anyone even remotely objective. you people are thinking with your emotions, not using common sense or your head.

if we hire dabo we'll be an even bigger joke than what we've already been this year in college football. wanting dabo hired is more stupid than wanting bowden to stay.

Posted by flatiger66 on November 22, 2008 at 04:22 PM EST #

nice blog flatiger.........NOT

Posted by TigerNtheSky on November 22, 2008 at 04:42 PM EST #

lol, you Dabo supporters are worse than TB lovers. There is not one logical, intelligent, rational reason to hire Dabo over Leach, or Patterson, or some other proven head coach.

Name one school that would even interview Dabo as an OC if we do not give him the HC job? (crickets)

Name one school besides Clemson that would hire Dabo as HC over Leach or Patterson? (crickets)

It's called thinking with your hearts not your head! It's called making emotional, not rational decisions. It's called stupidity!!

Posted by flatiger66 on November 23, 2008 at 01:54 PM EST #

You dimwits need to pay attention to Flatiger. He is the only rational voice I've heard on this Dabo for HC bandwagon. Everything he has said is true. You Dabo freaks are teh same TB freaks that kept us mediocre at best for ten yrs. We don't need fans like you. We need fans who want to win. Take Dabo and go root for some podunk school.

Posted by junk yard+tiger on November 23, 2008 at 06:33 PM EST #

Rich Rodriguez has proven that he can lose to a multiple TD underdog at home with a trip to the title game on the line, and then go to Michigan which has loads of talent and fail to make it to a bowl game for the first time since the mid 70's. I don't know about you, but I really don't want a coach with that on his resume.

Leach has never been to the Big 12 title game, and is just now having a break-out year. TT has always been good but not great, and will continue to be that way under Leach.

Posted by Locotiger on November 24, 2008 at 08:36 AM EST #

I just can't figure out how flatiger66 became so much smarter than everyone else! You are just objectiveness and humility personified! Maybe someday we all can hope to be as intelligent and all knowing as you are! BTW, they make medicine and therapy for that anger problem you have. I for one am going to wait and see what happens and then make a judgment but I doubt I will come on here bashing fellow tiger fans just because I disagree with their opinion!

Posted by jdwtiger on November 24, 2008 at 10:05 AM EST #

jdw,, there are facts and then there are opinions. opnions exist when there is reasonable factual support to both sides of a debate. i don't bash legit opinions, but opinions based on emotions with zero factual support are baseless and deserve attack. there are zero tangible facts to support dabo over a proven head coach. the facts and every reasonable objective argument are clearly on the side of NOT hiring dabo. no one even remotely objective, or using their head, would support dabo. fact, not opinion.
