Friday E-Mail Bag

Friday E-Mail Bag
Each Friday I publish your comments and answer your questions. To submit a comment or questions please e-mail me at mickeyplyler@hotmail.com.

Mickey,
When can we expect that blog that you promised detailing the problems for the Olympic sports in the Clemson University athletic department? When is the last time that you asked the individuals who you think are responsible for holding the athletic department from fielding national caliber teams from appearing on you show and defending their position? I am ready for you to start naming these people in order to have a “discussion” about their philosophy.
Best Regards,
Donald

Donald,
I promise you I am still working on that particular blog. I want to be factual and fair. I have already talked to a ton of sources on the subject but I am still chasing a few more to continue to get the complete insight. This is a serious subject and I want to gather all of the information before I publish it. Former Clemson coaches and former Clemson assistant coaches have been extremely helpful but more information is needed. The facts are that Clemson has won only three ACC titles in the last four years. I started researching because I wanted to know if we had management or leadership in the athletic department. Multiple conversations indicate there is a common denominator that is an issue. I will not use current Clemson coaches or assistant coaches because I don’t want to put them in an awkward situation but there a lot of resources to help on the subject. I tell you this to ask for your patience. It just takes some time to gather the facts and opinions from former coaches that are scattered across the country. Thanks.

Mr. Plyler,

What you fail to understand is that not only are the students embararrased and fed up with the Bowden era, but a host of other Clemson graduates are also sick of him. Bowden has had more than enough time to win. He should have won an ACC title long ago, and he blames everyone else when things don't go right. Bowden needs to move on so we can get a coach that can take us to the next level! I'm sure Bowden is nice man, but that does not win ball games.

Bob

Bob,
When was Clemson favored to win the ACC under Bowden before this season?

Mickey,

My name is Dave - Class of 88 and 89 and I live in Anderson. I was listening to your program this morning just like any other day and this morning you were talking about the students attending games, noon games, tailgating and parking. I was going to call which I have done about 2 times in the last 5 years (just not a radio guy) but I was pulling into work.

I would like to comment on Noon games and why my family, friends and myself have a hard time with them as well as getting fired up for them.

One comment I always here is people have to get boozed up for the later games and they cannot do that if it is an early game. In my case the majority of my Alumni Friends this is not the case - if fact at our tailgate we have not had "drinks" for over 15 years. This is not a part of our life.

For us, the experience of a Clemson game is not just the game but everything surrounding the game which in a large part includes tailgating. When we have a noon game or like last week a 1:00 pm game this time is severely cut into and limited. I park in Lot 13 the old Rugby Field (not lot 10). No matter what time the game is we get here as early as possible to allow for enough time to tailgate.

Well during the last week and it will be the same this coming Saturday. Here is how things went this past Saturday with a 1:00 pm start - everything this week will move one hour forward:

1. Packing - started on Thursday night loading up the car with all of the no perishable items. Why - my daughter and son are involved in TL Hanna Football and we have the games on Friday night.

1a. Packing more - Friday night - till about 11:30 pm - packing the car more with coolers of ice and soft drinks and arranging the balance of the food in the kitchen

1c. Packing - Saturday morning - up at 5:00 am to finish the packing now the food items and loading onto the car as well as adding all of our flags etc. to the Car - showering and getting a quick bite to eat to hold us over until the tailgate.

2. Leave the house at 7:45 am to Clemson and arrive in the Parking Lot at about 8:20

3. Setting up all of the Stuff and putting out the food - 9:30 to 9:45 am.

4. Start cooking until food is done at about 10:45 am and Eat :11:30 am

5. As soon as we are done eating - pulling down all of the stuff we just set up and packing the car so we can leave when the game is over. Done at Noon - start walking to the Stadium.

6. Arrive in the Stadium at 12:25 at our seats and watch pre-game

7. 1:00 - Tigers come down the hill - all pumped up.

8: 1:05 pm - Sit my butt down because I realize I am freaking tired along with the whole family since we have been rushing around the last two nights and all morning. I know I am not alone in this opinion. Once again - this has nothing to do with drinking etc. It is alot of work to attend a Clemson game and do it right.

Now how in the heck am I supposed to be pumped up for a game. With a 3:00 pm start or later we get to read the paper, take our time cooking out, watch another game on TV, having time to go to the Tiger Tailgate show, visit friends tailgates - maybe go downtown - this is all part of the experience - I know the game is important but equally important to us and our friends in the time together in a great tailgating setting.

I know personally I feel cheated when the school schedules these games early and for all of the price increases and having my parking be pushed further and further away from the stadium I am about fed up by the time I arrive at the game. (I will not get into my issues with the coaching and the death traps of games like we have this weekend).

So as you said this morning - we only have 4 more games to enjoy this year at Clemson - you are right, but right now 50% of my enjoyment has been cut out due to the early starts with no guarantee of having that complete experience in the coming weeks.

Many persons say - well tailgate afterwards - which on an occasion we do. However, many times sitting in the sun and rooting on the Tigers when the game is over we are ready to leave and catch other games on TV at the house.

Lastly, I do not buy the argument that TV is what dictates the Noon and 1:00 pm starts - it is the ACC, School, IPTAY and the Athletic Dept that allows TV to dictate the schedule to us. If we make is well known to the ACC and the persons who negotiate these contracts that Clemson's fan base prefers their starts after 3:00 pm then that should be part of the contracts on keep the real early starts to an absolute minimum. My confirmation of this argument is look at South Carolina - for a program that has been down in relationship to Clemson's over the past 10 years their percentages of late starts is much higher than ours. Also what about the non-televised games - why in the heck are these starts early - in these cases they are teams like the South Carolina State etc. and having a good relaxing tailgate is just that more important since the game itself will be lacking excitement like this past weeks game.

In any case, I am done venting on this because nothing at Clemson will change in regards to this. Right now the University is all about the dollar and not taking care of the fans that really support the program through thick and thin.

Thanks for listening and since I have not told you myself we have been praying for your family and Ryan - we are glad to hear your talk about even the littlest of progress he is making.

Take Care.
Dave

Dave,
I have some compassion on the early starts but TV does dictate the times when they are selected. Clemson has almost no negotiating power there. The University chose to play The Citadel at 3:30. They also chose to play SC State at 1:00. There are a ton of factors that go into selecting game times when TV is not involved. I was told one of the reasons they played at 1:00 this past weekend is the Clemson Police and others support earlier kick offs. They have less issues with drinking and it is less expensive to play at 1:00 because they can cut security earlier. They did not take into account heat and the medical issues of heat on some fans. Thank goodness heat was not an issue. Again there are a lot of factors and I don’t agree with the school selecting one. However, this weekend is different because the ACC tells Clemson they play at noon because of TV.

Morn Mick
I hope Ryan is doing great, I called that morning after the accident and that's the only time, I have e-mailed a lot, keep in the Lord!
Anyway- I work security on the Hill,l ast year is was mad, this year you can wait till game time in find a spot.
My thing is I am 47 I have played and coached my two kids for over 18 years, I don’t think boy or girls have the PASSION that we have or had at the same age, my 13 year old son for example I CAN NOT for the life of me to play football or watch. Me I wear the remote out trying to watch all I can once I get home.
The PASSION for kids to go and cheer is not there, where to lay the blame? No idea~ It's not the coach I don't think it's the Alabama game even if we would have won I don't think the kids would be there. We need to figure out why and what to do. I do see a difference in the time of the game also. The later the game the bigger the game the more that come.
Too often we... enjoy the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought.
John F. Kennedy

Mike

Mike,
I am trying to figure out the student apathy. I understand there are many reasons but stay with me while I continue dialogue with the students on the issue.

Good morning Mick,
First let me say how great Ryan is looking. I have never met you nor Ryan but I did see you pushing him into the game this past Saturday and he truly is a living miracle, all praise be to Jesus Christ.

Ok, here's my take and this will tick a lot of people off but I don't care. In my opinion the single biggest problem with college students is plain and simple - ALCOHOL. There's nothing more disappointing than to drive through campus and see a beautiful woman who can barely walk but she's got a firm grip on a bottle of Jim Beam or toting a case of Coors Light. It gets even worse when you sit in the stands surrounded by the future of our great country, the leaders of my children someday and they are sloppy drunk or can't wait 'til halftime to get back to the beer and liquor at their tailgate. It blows my mind that these people come in, sit down, cheer/not cheer and it's like they're on a timer to get back to the parking lots. I'm not thumping the Bible or preaching. I don't mind having adult beverages but they don't dictate my life on any given Saturday.

My solution to the tickets that are not used is to have a 5 PM cutoff on Thursday for the CU students. If they don't get their tickets they lose them for that game. CU should take the left over tickets and give them to the local schools or civic organizations. Keep fighting the good fight. God bless you, your family and Ryan.

Kevin

Kevin,
It would be hypocritical for me to criticism young people on alcohol. I did it when I was there age. But there seems to be a disconnect with the student body like I have never seen. Hopefully I can get some information and give fans an idea of what they are thinking. But I want to be clear that I am disgusted to see hundreds of empty seats in the student section.

Mick,
One problem is that a lot of kids that do come go to a tailgate at halftime and don't return. Especially in these last 3 games. Maybe a few arrests for underage drinking would slow this down.

Dave

Dave,
They can drink the other 358 days a year. The Tigers only play at home seven times a year.

Hey Mickey,

I'm a season ticket holder and my blood runneth orange. I sit on the
lower deck, south stands (home side) on the 2nd row, 10 yd line west
side. Now that being said I've always marveled at how much louder the
student section is than the rest of the crowd...except for this
season. Look the fans need to get off their hands and cheer this team
on. Get up off your butt and scream and chant.

Students can't park? Come on ride the cat bus or, God forbid, WALK to
the stadium from public parking. Can't tailgate?? Ever heard of the
Esso club? Come on, those excuses are ridiculous. Get your butts in
the stands, get on your feet, and by God when that defense is on the
field scream until it hurts. Trust me you will make a difference. This
isn't just pointed at the student section either. Those fans, the big
donors near the 50 yard line need to yell more too. When Clemson is
spelled around the stadium you can barely hear the N being said. Get
up and yell it, it’s not difficult.

Now we all need to come out and support the team every game! Help them
win and we all will be happier in the end.

Thanks Mick, love the show.

Billy

Billy,
I hope we see a different student section against Maryland tomorrow. I have heard from students that there is more of a buzz on campus this week so I expect to see a difference. I am williong to give them another chance.

Hey Mickey, when are you going to write that blog about the Administration? I've been looking forward to that all week!

Patrick

Patrick,
Please see the response from the first e-mail above. I ask for your patience. Thanks.

Hi Mickey,

I was reading your SC State Worksheet and it dawned on me that the goals you use for offensive productivity seem really low (More than 225 yards passing - 227/ More than 150 yards rushing - 189). If you add the passing and rushing goals, then we aspire to about 375 yards of total offense. I would think we would strive for over 400 yards total offense which should be reflected by the sum of passing and rushing. So, how about goals of 225 yards passing and 175 yards rushing or 250 yards passing and 150 yards rushing?

Anyway, just a thought. I hope Ryan is continuing to make great progress on his road to recovery.

Kirk

Kirk,
Those goals are on the low end but are meant to be. Even thought the goal is 225 passing and 150 rushing, most of the time they will go over that and thus get over 400. It is just a little wiggle room. Go back and look at how many games teams rush for more than 175 yards. It does not happen too often.

Mickey,
I read your blog regularly and appreciate your perspective across the spectrum of Clemson sports and life issues as well. I’m really glad to read about Ryan’s progress!
I, and MANY other Clemson folks I talk to have a fundamental question for Coach Bowden and Coach Spence. If this question has been asked and answered before, I apologize. (NOTE: I like and greatly respect both of these coaches)
With James Davis and C.J. Spiller on the same team, why isn’t the offense designed to have both of them in the game at the same time? Both are big play makers and every touch of the ball can turn into a big play. Both require the defense to key on them, spreading out the possibilities and making the defense defend multiple axis of attack. It’s not very complicated to me, but it seems you have two potential All-Americans and you play them half a game each. Both can receive as well as run. Unless I’m missing something, they are RARELY in at the same time. Don’t most runners need multiple carries to “warm up” or “get into the rhythm?” Basically, on a stewardship level, I see the coaching staff, by way of how the offense is designed, squandering two great players and giving Clemson less of a chance to win games each week. What is the logic of how they are (under)utilized?
Thanks,
Greg

Greg,
I have noticed Davis and Spiller in the game more often this year than on the previous two. Last year you had a good point but they have utilized it more this season.

Mickey, I used to be in Tiger Band and I think it's important that people don't necessarily blame the band for the Hill fiasco. I know one girl in the band who is extremely hurt by some of the comments people make about them online. We always worked really hard and these kids do as they are told. Tiger Band works hard to keep the crowd pumped up and has 270members...the biggest in over a decade. I think they deserve some props.

The actual reason the band was too early playing was due to confusion from the Athletic Department. Apparently TDP wants to lower the amount of time the players spend jumping up and down behind the Rock, so the Athletic Dept. told Dr. Spede to have the band play when the team rounds "the corner." Since they didn't specify, there was some confusion and the band
played as they rounded the first corner, NOT the second one, causing the whole mess. But they were just following instructions.

But this really plays into what you said about the AD having a "disconnect" with the fans. Why are we fixing something that isn't broken? WHY limit the amount of time on top of the hill when it's been done the same way with success for 30 years?

Thanks for reading my email.
Z S

Z S,
If you noticed on the radio and the blog, I never blamed the band. I talked to Jon Seketa Monday and learned the full run down of what happened and I never blamed the band.

Hi Mickey
I'm a lifelong Clemson fan and a parent of a student. I can feel the disconnect from the athletic dept & administration. They seem so focused on $ today & top 20. I am afraid it is going to bite them in the A... down the road. They have reduced the # of tickets available to the sororities according to my daughter, and a student ticket is $35. That is a lot of cash for a coed. In my opinion, if you force the students to do something other than football on Saturday they will develop new interest and forget about Clemson Football.
Go Tigers

RICK

Rick,
I don’t disagree on the disconnect. I am not sure about the number of tickets each sorority gets but there is no charge for student tickets to home games. That is covered in their activity fee.

Mickey,
In all the discussion about whether or not to use Willie Korn more, I haven't heard anybody mention using Korn in short yardage and goal line situations, like Florida did with Tebow his freshman year. I would think that would give Korn some snaps in pressure situations, plus his mobility should improve our chances in short yardage and not "show up" Cullen Harper at the same time.

What do you think?

David

David,

I think Korn has played well enough and has earned a chance at a few significant snaps per game. If that is in the goal line then OK. I just think he has earned some time.

Comments:

Mickey, "Z S" never said you were blaming the band - he said online commenters are. And they are--I've seen more hateful comments towards Tiger Band in the past week than I have in the past 4-5 years combined. I think he was asking you to use your bully pulpit a little bit to defend the band and to stem the negativity a little bit, not accuse you of adding fuel to that fire. It's disappointing that your response couldn't be any stronger than "I never blamed the band". There's a really strong "...but" implied in your response.

Mickey, I liked your answers to Bob (TB bashing) and to David (Korn).
We fans have been bashed about "criticizing Harper" especially.
I am pro-Harper, and he has never admitted his shoulder problems until after the fact - Auburn game and Alabama game. And it appears coaches do not notice it until Harper tells them, which says alot about them too. Korn should have been given a chance in both games. Harper missed golden opportunities to rest his shoulders for three games. Again Korn could have gotten some important experience.
Harper will shut everybody up, by getting back to throwing accurate long passes to Aaron Kelly. When is the last time? That was a beautiful toucn pass to Spiller, and it gives me hope. If Harper comes back, Watch Out! I hope he does, otherwise, he ought to take himself out or the coaches ought to take him out if he is not being effective (not optimistic about that)!

WAKE UP COACHES! COME BACK CULLEN! GO TIGERS!

Gotta love all the people downing the "future of this country". No subsequent generation is ever going to measure up to the fanatics of the previous generation's expectations.

So thanks for calling us lazy, even though we are probably more involved in service than you ever were (a very general you, not you Mickey), drunks, even though you all did the same thing, unmotivated, based off 3 crappy home games.

Telling us all those things is not the way to motivate the student body. If anything, it makes everyone think what a crazy old fart you are (again this is going out to some of these posts/emails I've been reading). I don't know what will motivate the student body, but that's not it.

Mickey--
1st time in several seasons that I will not make the journey to DV to see a meaningful ACC game. The Ath. Dept. and Administration and IPTAY are killing the "golden goose". Fan apathy is directly related to uninspired play in big games [most OOC) & Teh AD interfering with the fan involvement at Clemson home games.
Arrest the 'bums' who accosted T. O'Brien after NCSU game and assure they are never in attendance at future CU athletic events. Don't punish the fans for the terrible behavior of two.

Personally I find the Friday Mail Bag to be much more enjoyable when the answers are longer than the questions. And I like it better when the questions are actually questions, rather than multiple-paragraph opinions.

A friend of mine that is a student at FSU got season tickets from the university for $110!!! That is way less than we are paying...that tells me that FSU's administration is helping to do their part to get FSU football back to greatness. Can anyone say that our university is helping us, in any way whatsoever, get back to greatness? I DON'T THINK SO!!!!

Whose fault is it that Clemson hasn't been picked to win the ACC? Wake Forest, wasn't picked to win the ACC when Grobe won it. Wake and VT had terrible attendance problems before their top-notch coaches built championship teams. Now their stadiums are packed.

Let me start by saying that I don't know if every program is this way, but when I played it was the player's responsibility to tell the coaches/training staff if he was hurt and couldn't perform. The player is the ultimate judge whether he is healthy enough to help his team. He has to be completely honest with himself and able to put team over self, and sit when he's not physically able to perform at the expected level.

If a player plays hurt and performs, it was a gutty performance. But, if a player plays hurt and does not perform, the coach should have never played him. Which is it? You can't shift the credit/blame based on the outcome.

Want better attendance and fan support?

Easy!!!

1. Get a passionate coach.

2. Put a better product on the field.

3. Stop scheduling so many cupcakes and meaningless games.

4. Get rid of this PC "kinder gentler" approach by the Barker & the AD!! This is the South, football is religion, and passion!! Clemson is turning into a pu$$y of a school! This isn't Brown or UC-Berkeley!!

In response to the response to bob. Isn't the fact that we have not been favored to win the ACC further evidence of Bowden's inability to construct and coach a team on the level that most everyone thinks he should have by now. Why, after 10 years, and many millions in capital improvements are we in the seemingly poor condition with our offensive line?

Posted by TygerRiverTiger on September 26, 2008 at 01:37 PM EDT #

Sorry Rick, but your daughter's been scamming you for an extra $35 bucks. That was almost funny, and then I thought about my daughter who's soon to be a teenager and now I'm almost sad.

You just made the man's point Mick.
