Friday E-Mail Bag

Each Friday I publish your comments and answer your questions. To submit a comment or questions please e-mail me at mickeyplyler@hotmail.com.

Mickey,

Mickey, I have just read your Blog on "Branding" and it reminded me of something that was mentioned about the "West Zone" some time ago. No matter how good that name is there is a Public Relations bonanza in calling the West Zone the "Hard Spot". What PR man wouldn't love to say that the Tigers have their opponent right where they want them, "between The Rock and the Hard Spot. Love your Blog.

Sincerely,

Norton

Norton,

I thought I had heard it all until your e-mail. Brilliant! I have forwarded your e-mail to several friends. Thanks!

Mickey,

This baseball season has been extremely trying for everyone. I think one thing that makes it so hard for me is that I don't see a light at the end of the tunnel. Part of this could be that baseball recruiting essentially goes completely under the radar. When you discuss football recruiting you always mention upgrading talent at a position, do you believe this year's class for baseball will provide us with an influx of talent? I truly hope so because from watching the games this year, there doesn't seem to be any aspect of the game that we excel in. How many freshmen do you believe will come in and earn immediate playing time? If you could please provide some insight into the next few baseball recruiting classes I would greatly appreciate it.

Dustin

Dustin,

Thanks for the e-mail. Unfortunately, I agree with your points. I do know the staff felt very good about the players they have signed but remember the draft in June may affect the class again. Here are the 12 players Clemson signed in the fall:

Kevin Brady RHP 6-3, 195 Gaithersburg, MD

Allen Caldwell OF 5-11, 180 Spartanburg Methodist

Chris Dwyer LHP/OF 6-4, 200 Swampscott, MA

David Haselden RHP 6-4, 235 Spartanburg, SC

Will Lamb OF/LHP 6-6, 175 Seaford, VA

Ethan Martin INF 6-3, 205 Toccoa, GA

Brad Miller ONF 6-1, 175 Windermere, FL

Joseph Moorefield LHP 6-4, 205 Woodruff, SC

Richard Mounce OF/RHP 6-1, 210 Columbia, SC

Phil Pohl C 5-11, 195 Cooperstown, NY

Jason Stolz INF 6-2, 195 Marietta, GA

Scott Weismann RHP 6-1, 170 Boxborough, MA

Ethan Martin is perhaps the highest prospect in terms of the draft and the staff will hold their breath in June. Next week, when the guys get back in town, I will check and see how the spring signing period went and what the draft looks like.

Mickey,

The blog was right on. Agree 100%. I always enjoy your thoughts whether I agree or not.

Random thoughts on the SEC:

SEC is best conference in America in regards to traditions, atmospheres, history, attendance, etc.

SEC is truly a power conference in terms of football prowess and success

HOWEVER

They are not as dominant as they think they are. They play few road games out of conference. The ACC has a better bowl winning percentage than the SEC. I know the BCS % is better for the SEC but we're not the conference that is claiming to be light years ahead of everybody else. The ACC/SEC head-to -head match-ups are fairly close over the years and the C-Fila/ Peach bowl I think favors the ACC. SEC will argue that the match-ups favor the ACC but that is not always the case(i.e. CU 27 Tenn14). The bottom of the SEC has been very different recently.MSU, Ole Miss, Vandy, Bama, Kent, USC have not been real good. UGA fans think USC is good when they play them but argue that we don't play anybody. The NFL draft thinks pretty highly of the quality of football players in the ACC. The LSU vs. Va. Tech was a great argument for SEC dominance but that game was so lopsided because of the horrible play of Va. Tech at QB. That would be like playing a basketball game w/o a point guard--- you would get a distorted outcome. The SEC fans, schools, and TV promote their schools so well that there is a belief that the only football played is in the SEC. When they go out of league at bowl time this belief is often not supported. This past year was good in Bowl games for the SEC because they won some really close games. The SEC is very good. I would however love to buy them for what they're worth and sell them for what they think they're worth and then I could retire.

Hal

Hal,

While I agree on some of your points, it would help the ACC's argument if Miami and FSU would get back to where they once were. The bottom of the league is OK except for Duke but the top of the league has been down. The top of the SEC has been fantastic.

Hi Mickey,

I guess I am a little bit different than you are. I definitely pull for ACC teams when it will benefit Clemson. However, I also pull for ACC teams when they play out of conference, especially in the bowl games. I always want Clemson to be the conference champion, but I also want the conference to do well and the only way that can happen is for the other teams to win, except when they play Clemson or when it will hurt Clemson's standings in their division.

Kirk

Kirk,

We will have to disagree. I don't like any of the other schools and I want them all to struggle. The ACC schools gave Clemson an extra year of probation and I can't forget it. Also I have been treated too badly as a visitor to pull for the other schools.

MICKEY,

THE MERCY RULE???? THE MERCY RULE FOR CLEMSON BASEBALL?? WE SHOULD NEVER SEE THE MERCY RULE FOR THIS SPORT. THE BASEBALL PROGRAM IS ON THE SAMELEVEL AS WOMEN'S BASKETBALL.

SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE AND DONE QUICKLY. HOW THE MIGHTY HAS FALLEN.

HOW EMBARRASSING... GEEZ....

Rick

Rick,

I mentioned it on the radio show this morning that Clemson baseball is not very competitive with the top of the conference this season. Miami, FSU, Georgia Tech, NC State and North Carolina clearly outclassed Clemson on the diamond this season. It is down but it can come back. I am not as confident about women's basketball.

Comments:

Do people really care about baseball? This season has been laughable, and I don't see much improvement for next year. Reminds me of the Tommy West years...

You seem to contradict yourself in two consecutive breaths:

> it would help the ACC's argument if Miami and FSU would get back to where they once were.

> I don't like any of the other schools and I want them all to struggle.

Which is it? You can't have a premiere league if every team struggles every year. One also has a hard time legitimizing a conference championship if the competition is poor all the way around. If you want a dominant league, you have to have dominant teamS, not team.

I heard that Grover. I agree completely. My Dad taught me a long time ago to always pull for ACC out of conference. Sometimes it's hard to do but it helps Clemson if the rest of the conference does well.

grover173,

There is no contradiction. It would help the ACC argument iof FSU and Miami won but I don't care about that argument. I am not a fan of the ACC not do I want to try to defend it. But it would help their argument. Personally, I hope they lose everytime out.

I agree with Mickey on this one. Never pull for other conference teams unless it directly helps Clemson. The ACC can be a premier conference, but who cares unless Clemson isn't one of, if not THE premier team within the conference. To achieve that goal, other conference teams must suffer. Particularly the teams we recruit against. There is only so much room at the top of any given league.

Our baseball program is pitiful right now. The players that we have couldnt hit their way our of a wet paper sack, and after DJ Mitchell is drafted and leaves, we'll have no pitching to go along with what little hitting we have. We're in for some tough times. Jack better hire some better assistants and start recruiting very hard.
