Friday E-Mail Bag
Each Friday I publish your comments and answer your questions. To submit a comment or questions please e-mail me at mickeyplyler@hotmail.com.

Mickey,
I am a 2002 Clemson graduate residing in the DC metro area. Clemson is everything to me. I proudly wear orange as much as I possibly can, especially in the town of the ACC school I despise the most. I grew up near South Bend and I am the son of a Penn State graduate, so needless to say I have attended tons of college games as far as I can remember. In addition I have visited 9 ACC schools to watch our Tigers play. With all of these schools that I have visited, there is no fan base that I have less respect for than Terp fans. They are flat out classless win or lose.

With that said, here is my story...

A colleague of mine was an ACC referee for 22 years, and worked 17 ACC tournaments including numerous Championship games. I asked him last Friday if he knew of anyone I could BUY tickets from for the Clemson/MD game at the Comcast Center. He called me back on Sunday morning before the game and said go to Will Call and your 2 tickets will be there, and they were FREE. I was the happiest Tiger in the mid-Atlantic. Because of my schedule, the earliest I could get there was right at tip off. I pick up my tickets and walk to the first tunnel not knowing where my seats were. I ask the usher where my seats were... "Sir, you are all the way down on the wooden floor." I couldn't believe it. Unfortunately, my girlfriend (converted Tiger) and I had to walk all the way down to the floor through the entire student section, both of us wearing 100% orange. Needless to say, some things were thrown at us and awful things were said. One student was thrown out after an UMD official overheard what he barked at us. We sat directly on court, 2nd row along the baseline right next to the Clemson bench... the only thing between me and court was Boomer Esiason.

It was the greatest day of being a Clemson fan in my life. To be able to celebrate on the court, with the families of the team members after the historic 20 point come-from-behind win was a gift from god. Last night’s loss hurt, but it didn't hurt nearly as it usually does after witnessing the Oglesby 3-pointer drop through the net 10 feet from head.

I got home at midnight after that game, packed my bag and departed for Clemson at 5am Monday morning to interview Graphic Communications students for three days. I couldn't wait to get down there to buy my 2nd JD jersey as a thank you for him coming back for his senior year.

Regards,
--
Adam

Adam,

Sounds like you had a great evening in what could have been one of the best wins in Clemson basketball history. I wonder if Boomer’s face looked like most of the students they showed on TV. Shocked is the best way to describe that look. I think it is nice you have a ref as a friend. They need friends too (JK).

Hi Mickey,

As happy as I was about the win against Maryland, the loss to Georgia Tech showed me that OP still has a lot of work to do. Missing free throws is a ridiculous weakness of this team. We will not go far in the NCAA Tournament with poor free throw shooting and we will be fouled, intentionally, to capitalize on our free throw shooting woes.

I was generally disappointed in our offensive execution. We threw sloppy passes down low and they were stolen. We also had several defenders slip behind the defense for easy layups. The officiating was terrible, as usual, but we were our own worst enemy. We let a lousy team beat us. If we truly aspire to become an upper level ACC team, we must learn to beat inferior opponents.

Kirk

Kirk,
I thought free throws, effort and turnovers killed the Tigers last night. I was also extremely disappointed to let a great opportunity slip last night but hope we can rebound Sunday.

Mickey,

The blog keeps getting better, and I have really enjoyed the topics this week. You're a true Clemson Man!

Quick question...who are our football staff's top recruiting targets this year, and how does the staff feel about the current and potential commitments at this point in the process? Also, what positions do you think are the most critical to address this year? Thank you.

Hugh

Hugh,
Thanks for the very kind words. The staff is ecstatic about recruiting at this early stage. From a position standpoint I think they feel linebacker is going to be a key position in this class. Wide receiver may be another area of focus. I think they would to sign a player at each position but LB and WR are the early areas where they may over sign. Top uncommitted targets in the state include Stephon Gilmore, Sam Montgomery, Ricco Sanders, Brandon Thomas and Demario Jeffery. In Georgia they would love to sign players like Eric Fields, Jarvis Jones,Prince Kent, Jamal Patterson, JC Lanier and Abry Jones. In North Carolina they would love to sign players like DeVonte Holloman, Desmond Scott and Xavier Nixon.

Mickey,

When I arrived on campus in Fall 2004, I couldn't have named a single basketball player. I remember on the first day of English class the teacher called attendance, and when he got to Sam Perry he just smiled. He mentioned Sam was a basketball player from Greenville. I never thought too much of it. I always noticed Sam was really polite, took part in all of the class discussions, and sat on the front row.

A few weeks later I heard him talking with the professor about the conditioning they were doing. The thing that really grabbed my attention was that Sam said to the teacher CLEMSON BASKETBALL WAS GOING TO BE THE BEST CONDITIONED TEAM IN THE ACC. I will never forget that statement and I often remind myself of it during games. We are the best conditioned team in the ACC. This is our identity and I was attracted to it. That enables us to play the 94 foot style that you liked when you saw the Clemson vs. Hampton game.

The Monday after that game I overheard Sam and the teacher talking about the game. I checked the box score and I decided I might go try this Clemson basketball thing out. I watched the South Carolina game on TV and I went to the Ohio State game. I got great seats and I saw us erase a 10
point second half deficit to beat the Buckeyes (my favorite team growing up and my father's alma mater). I was hooked. I loved the press and it never even crossed my mind how good Mays, Perry, and Hammonds were playing for freshman due to my previous lack of experience. I have been to every basketball game I could make since. I am proud to say my senior class includes the likes of Mays, Perry, and Hammonds.

Thanks for that blog. Senior day vs. VT will be bittersweet, but I can't wait to be there. As a side note the best sports moment I have ever witnessed in person was senior day vs. VT in 2005.

CU08

CU08,

Thanks for the information. I continue to hear great things about those three guys. I think Sam has been very involved in a lot of things on campus and in the community. I know we are better because of these three guys and think we will look back at this class as being so important.

Hi Mickey,

About Thursday’s blog on character, this is definitely one of your better efforts in conveying a very important message to "the masses".......I'm a huge Tiger Fan...my Wife, Son and Daughter are all Clemson Graduates and needless to say, they are huge Tiger Fans as well.......but you know what they are even more so than Fans ????

THEY ARE PROUD TO BE CLEMSON TIGERS !!

Yes, athletic accomplishments are important to them, especially against those schools with "Carolina" in their name, but what they are most proud of is the "hallowed ground" that is Clemson University ...which includes Students, Student Athletes, Faculty, Staff, the Town of Clemson, the Bachelors Degree, the countless and unforgettable memories and on and on and on.

Clemson is special and Clemson people that recognize this, act like it !

Thanks again....

Dennis

Dennis,
Thanks for the kind words. I think people get so tired of hearing about the negative things in society and it is nice to be able to be proud of these good young people.

Mickey,

At what point will USC quit blaming the SEC. Honestly, win or change conferences. Dave Odem is a good coach, Lou Holtz was a great coach, Steve Spurrier is a great coach. And none of them can get it done. Maybe they should just give it up.

Have a good one,

-Wes in DC

Wes,
I agree all three are good coaches but I can’t see them crying uncle. Maybe a change in the nickname would do them good.

Mickey,
I have to agree about the positive attitude and having the Tigger outlook. My wife always tells me how I am like Tigger. I am really excited about the ACC Tourney and NCAA Tourney. I really believe Clemson can go far and compete with anyone on any given night. I am also excited about the football season. I think the O-line will hold their own and Clemson has a chance not only to be in the ACC Championship game but the National Title picture. I truly expect it. I hope more people can catch that outlook and let it spread like a wild fire though the fans, the school, and the teams. Let us be more like Tigger and less Eyeore. I hope you have a good day.
Jonathan

Jonathan,
I thought I might be the only adult that still watches that stuff but I just can’t help it. Thanks for the positive message.

I would like to hear what your thoughts are on the comparison of the Clemson Tigers Basketball program to the South Carolina Gamecocks Football program over the years?

I am of the opinion the two are very similar to each other.

Conferences:
South Carolina football plays in the SEC, which is traditionally known as a football power conference and South Carolina football has not been very successful in; while Clemson basketball plays in the ACC, which is traditionally known as a basketball power conference that Clemson basketball has not been very successful in.

Versus Power Teams in their Conferences:
Both teams have had very limited success over the years against the top teams in their perspective conferences!

South Carolina football has struggled against divisional opponents not having much success against Tennessee or Florida, and although they have been competitive against rival Georgia, they usually finish behind them most years in the end; Clemson basketball has not had much success against North Carolina and Duke, and although they have been competitive recently against Maryland they usually finish behind them in the end.

Versus other conferences teams:
Each year South Carolina football seems to lose to some teams in their conference that they shouldn't (example to name a few: is Vanderbilt in 2007, Arkansas in 2006, Kentucky in 2005); And each year Clemson basketball seems to lose to some teams in their conferences that they shouldn't (example to name a recent few: is Miami in 2008, Virginia in 2007, NC State and Va Tech in 2006).

Versus non-conferences teams:
Both teams traditionally fair very good in the non-conference games, specifically in the last few years.

Coaches:
South Carolina football has hired some big name coaches like Steve Spurrier and Lou Holtz, but they have also hired small school coaches like Sparky Woods and Jim Morrison, and have hired a top name assistant like Brad Scott; Clemson hired a big name coach like Rick Barnes (who was an up and coming coach at the time) and Oliver Purnell, but they have also hired some small school coaches like Cliff Ellis, along with promoting an assistant coach in Larry Shyatt.

Overall Records:

*according to the internet the South Carolina football all-time record is: 521–523–44 (.499)

*according to the internet the Clemson basketball all-time record is: 1111-1153-2 (.490)
Unsigned

Unsigned,
I had a radio earlier this week discussing the same subject. I wonder if Clemson’s basketball season gives USC fans more hope for the future. I think you make very valid points.

Mick,
I am halfway through your "email bag" when I came across Jonathan's email and questions about getting tickets. My father just got his first set of season home tickets and won't be making it to all of the games. We live about an hour away from where he's at in Pensacola. If you wouldn't mind emailing Jonathan and letting him have my email address I'd be happy to try and set something up for him to go to his first home game. We would have two tickets midway up the lower level around the 35 yard line, a great place to watch your first home game.

Take care,
Ian

Ian,

You are awesome. Thanks for the incredible act of kindness. I accidently deleted your e-mail address so could you please send it again so I can forward it to Jonathan? Thanks.

Mickey,
First, I have to thank you for the response last Friday. I am truly humbled by you and your offer. I would be honored to come on the show when I finally get a chance to make it for a game. I hoping at least two this year. I believe it is going to be a special fall. I think the football team is going to exceed expectations. I believe people are going to be shocked when in November Clemson is being talked about for a National Championship. I truly believe and hope everyone else catches the excitement. Thank you for the offer about tickets. Again I am truly humbled. I simply want to enjoy live what I have enjoyed since I was seven and from a far. Do you remember the Wake game 2 seasons ago when we were down starting the 4th quarter? I remember it being about two or three in the morning in Japan and watching the game. It was amazing. As soon as Gaines Adams ran back the block, I jumped up and screamed game over. I knew they were going to win that game.
I also think we are going to have a big March. This team can beat anyone in the country. They are talented enough. They simply have to play the way they can. Play like the last 11 minutes against Maryland for an entire 40 minutes. IF Clemson is able to run the table and win the ACC Tourney, what seed do you think they will get?
I hope you have a good day. Continue leading the excitement in Clemson sports. These are great times and are going to get better. Again, thank you. If you ever just want to chat about sports or whatever hit me up.
Jonathan

Jonathan,
Thanks again for everything you guys do. A quick note-Can you send me another e-mail. I have accidently deleted your e-mail and Ian’s e-mail so I need to get you guys hooked up. Thanks and looking forward to hearing from both of you guys.

Hey Mickey.
I continue to enjoy your daily blogs.....over the past couple of weeks I have found myself with some odd feelings....odd, because I've been an ACC Basketball fan for over 50 years, and a Tiger fan for over 33 years and the feelings are...............

WHAT AM I GOING TO DO ON PLAY IN DAY !!! No Tigers to watch !!

I'll watch anyway...should be couple of good games Thursday !!

Thanks,

Dennis

Dennis,

Maybe some Andy Griffith re-runs may be on. If it really gets bad maybe you can watch the worst show in the history of television, Nancy Grace. I am fond of Family Guy on a serious note. Also the DVD for “No Country for Old Men” comes out Tuesday.

Isn’t it nice not to worry about play-ins. Hopefully we will win Sunday or Miami will lose Saturday and we can get a bye.

Mickey,
You know how if you stand over the golf ball staring at it too long you usually blow your shot? (Not necessarily you personally!) I only watch basketball occasionally, but when I watched the Maryland game on TV (with great delight), it jumped out at me that if a Clemson player stood at the free-throw line with the ball in his hands, staring at the hoop for too long, he would usually miss. But if a player just dribbled and looked up at the hoop for a split-second before shooting, he would usually sink the free throw. I didn’t record the game and put a stopwatch on the free throws so I can’t support my observation with statistics, but it really seemed that way. They say that golf is the only sport where your most feared opponent is yourself. But I think golf and free throws are identical in that regard. Is it possible that our guys could improve their free throw percentage by simply tweaking their pre-shot routine to stop staring at the hoop so long?

By the way, I heard that you’re quite the golfer because I had the pleasure of randomly sitting across the aisle from your golf buddy, Ken Murray on a plane flight to Atlanta several months ago. It didn’t take us long to figure out that we both went to Clemson-- and the flight time passed quickly as we talked about Clemson and politics for a few hours. He spoke highly of you.

-RazzMaTazz

RazzMaTazz,
I think you make a good point about rhythm in free throw shooting and golf. I think both are similar. Ken is one of the best amateurs in South Carolina and would beat me 99 days out of a 100. He is a better friend than a player though.

Do you know why Addison Johnson is not starting for the baseball team? Is he injured or did he lose his starting position?

Thanks,
Karen

Karen,

Addison has a hamstring injury that has kept him out so far. He is hoping to play as soon as this weekend but the cold, wet weather may hurt his chances again. He will regain his starting spot when is healthy.

Hey Mickey,

Really enjoy the blog and all of the insight and interesting information. I was noticing the position changes for the football team and want to be hypothetical. After all, that makes the preseason fun. I noticed Rendrick Taylor is moving to ILB. While I may be reading too
much into this, it does not say middle linebacker, but inside. Does this possibly imply the implementation of a 3-4? DaQuan Bowers could play one end, Jamie Cumbie would be a good end in a 3-4 with Dorrell Scott manning the nose spot . Ricky Sapp at one OLB and maybe Kevin Alexander at the other OLB with Vincent and Taylor inside? Also, how quickly do you think Jock McKissick can contribute on the OL? My main concern for next season is the youth - not the talent - of our OL.

Go Tigers,

Daniel

Daniel,
I don’t think you will see a 3-4 scheme but could be wrong. I think Sapp would benefit from the move like you said and in some ways the personnel could do it. However, I think they are set on the 4-3 as the base. The staff thinks McKissic may have what it takes to be successful there and will give him every opportunity to compete starting Saturday.
