Football Questions-#1 Which QBs Will Play?

Football Questions-#1. Which Qbs Will Play?
July is here so that means the second session of summer school and pre-pre-season practice has begun. The team will go out with voluntary workouts each afternoon now and we are about one month away from the actual pre-season August camp.

This also means that we have held off long enough so it is time to really start talking some football. We could talk about it 365 days a year but July is the month when I think a lot more people are ready to start getting excited about the upcoming season.

So over the next two months we are going to talk football. Specifically we will try to answer questions and tackle some of the issues that the pre-season brings.

For example:
1- How many quarterbacks will play?
2-Who will start at quarterback?
3-How effective will the new quarterbacks be?
4-How will Spiller respond without James Davis?
5-Is Harper and Ellington the new Thunder and Lightning?
6-Can Jacoby Ford be a number-one receiver?
7-Who will step up among the unproven wideouts?
8-Are the tight ends a strength?
9-Should we be optimistic about the offensive line?
10-How does the new offensive staff rank?
11-Is Ricky Sapp ready for a big senior season?
12-Will Da’Quan Bowers have a monster season?
13-Can this defensive line dominate?
14-Is this linebacking corps a question mark?
15-Can you have a great defense without dominating linebackers?
16-Who will step up at safety?
17-Will we see Clemson’s cornerbacks excel in a more aggressive defense?
18-Can this defense rank among the best in the ACC? Country?
19-How does this defensive staff rank?
20-How difficult is this schedule?
21-Which freshmen will play?
22-Which red-shirt freshmen will contribute the most?
23-How does recruiting stand heading into the season?
24-How can this program get over the top and win the division? ACC?

With eight weeks until game week, we will answer three of these questions each week. Today let’s look at the first question, “How many quarterbacks will play this season?”

The depth chart heading into fall camp will list Kyle Parker and Willy Korn as co-starters. Michael Wade will enter camp as the number three guy and true freshman Tahj Boyd will begin as the number four quarterback.

Clemson will be extremely young at the position this year. Wade is a red-shirt junior but has moved between offense and defense in his career. He has yet to take a snap at quarterback.

Korn is a red-shirt sophomore who saw action in each of the last two seasons. The Duncan, SC native has played in 10 games over the last two seasons and started one. As a red-shirt freshman he started against Georgia Tech but did not finish the game due to a shoulder injury.

Parker is a red-shirt freshman and Boyd is a true freshman. Obviously neither has played a down in college yet.

Tomorrow I will touch on the starter in 2009 but today let’s look at who will play this season.

Under Tommy Bowden and most head coaches in college football, when a starter is announced he is the starter for the season. Few schools play two or more quarterbacks in a season as a starter. In most cases, when the starter is announced then the competition is usually over because the starter needs most of the reps in preparation.

I do not think this will be the case for Clemson in 2009. I may be in the minority but I see this staff handling the quarterbacks differently this season. I think they would like to have one of the signal callers step up and make the decision easy but I can’t see that happening.

Coming out of the spring, Parker looked like he was ready to take the position. However, as I warned everyone ready to judge, you should not analyze players when they are injured and it was clear Korn was not 100% in the spring. I have not seen Korn this summer but have talked to some who have and they say he is much better than what we saw in the spring. Thus I think we have a quarterback competition.

I think this battle will continue throughout the season and I think we will see both Parker and Korn especially early in the campaign. As the season progresses, I think we could see one of the quarterbacks step up and separate but this should happen in the games. I think we could see Parker hot one game and Korn get the hot hand the next until about half way through the season.

Because both quarterbacks will need time in their development, it will be difficult for a third quarterback to see significant action this season. So can Wade or Boyd crack the top two? I think this is not very likely. If Boyd is healthy and can grasp the offense, I think he could have the best chance to break into the lineup but at this time I think that would be difficult to do.

The one thing that could change this entire situation is injury. Parker or Korn could win the starting job by default if in injuries arise and this could open the door for Boyd and/or Wade.

Inexperience is perhaps the best word to describe the quarterbacks at Clemson heading into the fall camp but thank goodness that talented is the other word one could use as well. This group is one of the deepest and most talented group of quarterbacks the school has had in some time also.

Comments:

How much of playing QB is mental, and how does that aspect of one's game become weakened when they know they could be on the bench if they have a bad series, quarter, or half? Or, does the added competition inspire them to work harder and make every throw or play count? I am pretty sure competition in practice is always a good thing, but they may not need that added pressure once the ball is actually snapped. It is an interesting question.

If what you say is true about shared duty, and I think there is a good chance it is, this will be marked as "big mistake #1" in the young coaching career of Swinney. How many times have we seen a QB platoon turn into a disaster? The only times it has worked is when #2 serves a specific purpose, such as a scrambler being used to change up things on a defense. More of a gimmick backup guy.

Choose a guy at some point in August practice and move forward. Tag this post, we will need it in November.

I tend to agree with truetiger1998 in that unless the QB's offer much different skill-sets (which is not the case w/ Parker & Korn), we need to name one, develop confidence, and give him the reins to the offense. The QB position is too important to experiment with during the season, IMO.

I beg to differ a bit. Cullen Harper played better when everyone was cheering for Korn.
Some qb's need the confidence of the coaches, some need the constant pressure of competition. Knowing the difference is where coaches earn their money.
Many teams have run two qb's successfully, many have not. You can say that one qb looking over his shoulder after every mistake will hurt his confidence but what about the other guy who is looking from the sideline and wonder if he'll ever get a chance no matter how bad the first guy screws up.
In my estimation, it will come down to whether we want the guy who screws up less, or makes big plays more. Korn seems steadier, Parker more able to pull a rabbit out of the hat. Either way, I expect play from the qb position to be as good or better than '08.

Could not agree more Clemsnman...different people react differently to different pressures. This is where Dabo will earn his money...figuring out what will work. Just because Korn and Parker are similar athletically does not mean they are the same mentally. A dual QB system with similar players is not in itself a bad decision.

Phil Jackson is a master at this...his books talk about how you have to treat each player differently depending on what they do and don't respond well too.

But for the record, either way QB play needs to be BETTER than 08...not the same!

The Clemson Recruiter corps need to bottle rheir recipe that lured Boyd here and serve it up on all the outstanding prospects looking at Clemson. For him to choose Clemson with the existing quarterback situation says alot about our current staff.

He may be banking on injuries, or have an inside scoop about an early draft, but something worked to stock our stable.

After reading Mickey's blog, I started wondering a couple of things. 1) Was Boyd lured here by the idea that Kyle Parker most likely will pursue a pro baseball career? 2) If you are Dabo, and you name Parker the starter for 2009, what happens to Korn's confidence especially if Parker left next year? Do either of these situations lead you to believe that Korn may have a edge due to the possibility of Parker pursuing pro baseball? Do you firmly believe that Boyd came here with the idea that he would beat both of them out of the position?

The QB who is best on the practice field may not be best under the pressure of a real games. If Parker and Korn remain close, it may be worthwhile seeing which one performs better in a real game or two. An ideal situation would be if we could dominate MTSU to the point that Dabo could risk playing both QBs to see which one performs better on stage.

It would be nice to have the #2 guy as a threat to take snaps on field goals, extra points, and maybe even fake punts.

Dabo is smart to see how the QB race shakes out during the season. No amount of practice can truly replicate in-game situations, so our starter will have to earn the position after we have played a few games. What's not to like about that?

If one QB is clearly better than the other, I think Dabo will play him most of the time. But it's never smart to exclusively play one guy (see Bowden, Tommy). If an injury happens, or the starter begins to perform poorly, you need another guy with experience who can step in and play. We have two extremely talented guys ready to play - so play them! They are competitors, their egos can handle it.

I think both QBs could provide a much different team to defense. I also think the option will be a factor this fall.

I could be way off base her but Boyd has made it clear that he came here because there was no entrenched starter ahead of him. Therefore giving him a better chance to play early. I think you'll see Boyd play to some extent, if for no other reason than to keep him from transferring. JMO
I could be wrong. I often am !!

I am so excited to know that finally we have SOME real prospects. Any of these guys are capable of winning the job, and all have positive atributes. I like Parker the most right now, but Korn is a great athlete who has a real presence on the field, and Boyd is a guy who can do it all. Wow! Just Wow!!

"...it was clear Korn was not 100% in the spring."

What was clear to me at the Spring game was the following:

1st It was way too damn hot for a Spring game. I got burned like a GT CB by CJ Spiller.

2nd Korn was on the B-team offense. His offensive line and WRs were not the A players that was on Parker's offense.

3rd Korn is very fast and can make things happen with his feet. Not sure how fast Parker is since he had all day to throw to wide open WRs.

4th If Korn was playing 'injured' during the Spring game, then he fooled everybody in the stadium except you, Mickey. Good catch. ;-)

QB this year could revert back to some 50 years ago with Korn/Parker playing as White/Shingler. Boyd/Wade could be the Johnnie Mack Goff(sp) of that era (3rd team).
