Doom and Gloom
Doom and Gloom
I have read some posters on Tigernet and have heard from some callers on my radio show that had a disturbing attitude. I just can’t share the “doom and gloom” feeling some have heading into this weekend.
“The Tigers are gonna pull out their same ol’ collapse this weekend,” some say. Sure Clemson did not beat Boston College in 2007 and it hurt but 2007 has very little to do with this weekend’s game against NC State. The Tigers lost to Maryland in 2006 and it killed the Atlantic Division title chances and it hurt. However, that game has nothing to do to influence the outcome of the 2009 Clemson-NC State game.
Everyone knows Clemson has not won an ACC title since 1991 but I just can’t see how this will affect the 2009 game in Carter Finley Stadium.
Yet, some posters on message boards and a few callers on my radio show say they are scared of this weekend and have convinced themselves of a collapse in Raleigh. “This is the kind of game that scares me,” some have proclaimed.
Come on! Clemson may lose 56-0 to NC State this weekend but I can’t go into this contest scared of the Wolfpack. I just don’t see how Matt Ryan’s brilliant performance in Death Valley in 2007 or Aaron Kelly’s dropped pass that same game will have any effect on Saturday’s noon game.
I have read post by some posters that this is the kind of game Clemson always loses. Really? Always? Thanks goodness Jeff Davis did not feel that way in 1981. I am glad Steve Fuller and Jerry Butler did not have the internet distractions in 1978.
Is Hatfield coaching Saturday? Is Bowden coming back to be on the sidelines?
The other thing I heard is that a few fans are scared this weekend because NC State gives Clemson fits. Really? The same team that Clemson beat the last five seasons?
“But, Clemson struggles in Raleigh,” some argue. Really? Raleigh, North Carolina? The same place where Clemson has lost just five times in the last 28 years?
“But Tom O’Brien has Clemson’s number,” some add. Really? The same Tom O’Brien that is 2-2 against Clemson including the last two losses by a total of 40 points?
It is funny how our mind remembers what we chose to remember.
O’Brien may beat Clemson Saturday but it will not be because he owns Clemson. State may upset the Tigers Saturday but not because Clemson always struggles in Raleigh. The Wolfpack may beat the Tigers but it won’t be because of another Clemson collapse.
If State beats Clemson Saturday it will be because Russell Wilson executes. It will be because Clemson can’t contain Toney Baker or Jamelle Eugene. State’s defense may ruse up with their best performance in weeks or Clemson may turn the ball over.
And if the Wolfpack wins then shake their hands and congratulate them. But how can you go into Saturday’s game scared? Why go into it expecting bad things to happen?
In the glory days of Clemson football Tiger coaches, players and fans had swagger. I understand 6-3 football teams don’t have swagger but fans of 6-3 teams should not be scared of 4-5 football teams.
I guess the best attitude to have is to respect everyone but fear no one. I respect Russell Wilson, Toney Baker, Jamelle Eugene, Owen Wilson, George Bryan, Willie Young and Alan Michael-Cash. But State does not scare me and I cannot go into a game worried about what happened in other years with other teams.
Alex Rodriguez did not listen to the press or fans when they talked about his playoff failures and he lit up the opposing pitchers in this year’s playoffs and now has a ring. John Elway did not go into his final two seasons believing what some said about how he could not win the “big one” and he can away with two Super Bowl rings. Bobby Jones ignored the press when they called him a choke artist before he went on to win the Grand Slam.
If Clemson coaches, players and fans want to go into Saturday worried about what Phillip Rivers Torey Holt or Ted Brown did against the Tigers then we are in trouble. The only thing that matters is execution and any doubt or negative thought hurts execution.
Also I think it is fair to point out that the Tigers have a safety net below them this week. The standings in the ACC’s Atlantic division show us that this has come down to a two team race. Clemson and Boston College are tied with two losses but the Tigers have the tie breaker over the Eagles. No one wants to back into the division title but I am convinced that the Eagles will not run the table and win their final three ACC games. I don’t want it to come into play but I think BC cannot beat Virginia, North Carolina and Maryland. So Clemson has a safety net still out there and can still phone a friend in the Cavs, Tar Heels and Terps if they need the help.
Good News
I wanted to pass along some good news from a Clemson legend. In the last couple of weeks Harold “Mac” McKeown of Mac’s Drive In in Clemson has had a few health issues. He was exhausted and had not slept well in recent weeks. Things got a little complicated when he became dehydrated last week and his energy was sapped even more. Last week Mac was taken to the hospital and the doctors prescribed a short stay at a rehab center in Anderson where he could hydrate and get his diet back in order. The facility specializes in physical therapy and Mac has responded well.
A friend and I visited Mac Wednesday and he looked much better. He was excited about football season and was looking forward to basketball much more than his afternoon physical therapy. He said the staff felt good about his progress and the plans are to get him back home ASAP. I would look for a rejuvenated Mac McKeown behind the counter at Mac’s Drive In very soon.

FOCUS! THE TEAM IS DEPENDING ON US. WE CAN'T LOOK AHEAD!!!

I think as a Clemson fan I have cautious optimism going into this game. My gut tells me we are going to stomp this team, but nothing is guaranteed in college football.
Since the Maryland game, the Tigers have done a 180 offensively. I don't kow why and I don't care, but the play calling has changed. We are finally using intermediate passing routes with our te's and wr's - something that has been missing ever since the era of Spence.
If this team stays focused, NCSU is in for a long day. Hopefully, Clemson can start off strong and take the fight out of them early.
And forget safety nets. Clemson is in control of its own destiny. I hope they keep it that way. They don't need to depend on a BC team that continuously backs into the ACCCG.

I fully expect the Tigers to take care of business on Saturday in a workman like manner. I do not expect a blowout, but a methodical whipping that wears the pack down all game long, and then imposes their will on them in the 3rd & 4th quarters. There should be respect for their program, fans, players and coaches, but we are a much better team now than they are. We win big on Saturday, not necessarily by a huge scoring margin, but just by such overall dominance, IMO.

“But, Clemson struggles in Raleigh,” some argue. Really? Raleigh, North Carolina? The same place where Clemson has lost just five times in the last 28 years?
So we're 9-5 there in the last 28 years which means we've played there 14 times.
It looks different now.

To paraphrase Pai Mae in Kill Bill Vol. 2, "It is the wood that should be afraid of your fist."
...Though it is a bit unsettling that Richard Jackson is also out this weekend.
McRib: The 180 degree offensive turnaround is largely a Billy Napier turnaround. For two fascinating, refreshing articles/interviews on Napier's own thoughts about doing a better job since the UMD loss, check out the following.

This game has nothing to do with Raliegh, Russell Wilson, or some wild pack of mangy mutts. This game is all about Clemson. We are one close unit, with confidence, that executes with the precision of a surgeon.
We have goals that will be accomplished. They are in our way.
My advice, get out of the way.
I have a feeling we will play our best game of the year, and silence just a few more naysayers.
Go Tigers! We Believe!

yeah..I think most of those posters are only happy when things are going bad...they say they want us to win, but don't really act like it and don't give the support they should. Good Blog

There is a fine line between being confident in your ability to win, and not taking the other team seriously. I don't think anyone thinks we can't win, but I also think that most observers recognize the potential of this being a trap game. We did not win the Atlantic last Saturday night, nor do we have any margin for error if we want to continue to control our own destiny.
GO TIGERS!

Worked for about 2 years at Mac's and the times there are some of my fondest memories of my High School / College years. Best of luck to Mac and get well soon!

I say we win by 3 TD's. Spiller has a banner day. BC loses and all is well in Tiger Town. New year, New coach, new attitude players and fans. This is just a game let's get "all in" and have some fun. Let the rest of the ACC have their Doom And Gloom.

Mickey,
Great blog once again. I've been dreading this game since the scoreboard clock hit zero against fla st on Saturday. I guess I am afraid of the big letdown. Thanks for reminding me that it's ok to feel confident about our team. This is the one and only Clemson game I'll get to attend this season, and here I am feeling worried instead of excited about getting to watch my team play. Thanks again. Keep up the good work.

As the manager of 6 radio stations, including a Sportstalk in Columbia, SC, I deal with both Clemson and Carolina fan bases every day all day. I can say without question, Clemson fans are being FAR less critical and negative about their team's future than are the Gamecock fans. Mickey, Rymer, Philpot, etc. You guys are in Tiger country and hear mostly from Tiger fans. But take it from a guy that gets it in both ears... Tiger Nation's level of negativity does not even come close to the negativity being spouted by the USC "faithful." Carolina fans are absolutely freaking out right now and are in a state of meltdown.
So while your point is well-taken, if Todd Ellis had written it about USC, it would actually be more accurate and relevant.
Go Tiger fans! The greatest college football fan base in the world!

I'll agree about fear but I'll have some worry until it's over. Now my confidence is growing by the week. Prior to Wake I thought Miami would be an automatic lose. Right before kickoff I thought we had a decent chance to "upset" Miami. I figured FSU game should be a win but before the 3rd qtr we tried pretty hard to blow it. With NCSU being a road game I'll just say this game is no gimmee, and shoot yeah I'm worried we make enough pick 6's, dropped passes, and penalties to lose. NCSU won't beat us w/o help. Now I'm not worried about UVA at all, unless we have alot of injuries (something else to worry about) Hey If I didn't worry at all it would mean I didn't care.

But just to be clear as a straight up prediction I'm going CU 35 NCSU 17

It is time to have the same quiet confidence that the 1978 team had in College Park, Md., the same as the 81 team, the same as the 87 team, again in College Park, the 88 team, the 91 team, etc. Take care of business. If you think you can't, you are already beaten. If you think you can, you have a chance. I say we begin washing away 18 years of negativity on Saturday at 12 noon.
