Defensive Coordinator Candidates

Defensive Coordinator Candidates
Dabo is currently looking to replace Vic Koenning as his defensive coordinator and David Blackwell and Ron West will be co-coordinators for the Gator Bowl game versus Nebraska. Both could be candidates for the full-time position after the bowl game as well. Below are five potential candidates from outside of the program. At this point, John Chavis might be the leading candidate. I believe Paul Rhodes might be a factor before it is all said and done. I cannot confirm just how much Kirby Smart, Kevin Steele or Marion Hobby are candidates at this point. Again, if I were handicapping the field I would have Chavis as the favorite to be the next defensive coordinator at Clemson. However, I do believe this is a fluid situation.

John Chavis
Age: 52
Last Position: Defensive coordinator, Associate head coach, Linebackers coach
Born: Dillon, SC
College: Tennessee 1979
Coaching History:
1979 Tennessee Graduate Assistant
1980-83 Alabama A&M defensive line
1984-85 Alabama State defensive coordinator
1986-88 Alabama A&M defensive coordinator
1988-2008 Tennessee defensive line, linebackers. Defensive coordinator from 1995-2008.
Bowls: 18
Notes: In Chavis’ time in Knoxville, the Vols won the SEC East or tied for the SEC east seven times. His defenses helped Tennessee to the SEC title in 1997 and 1998 and the national title in 1998. Chavis was recognized in 2006 as the American Football Coaches Association's Division I-A Assistant Coach of the Year. In 2008, Tennessee finished fourth in the country in total defense, 12th in rushing defense, 11th in scoring defense and fourth in pass defense. Chavis has a good relationship with Woody McCorvey and Danny Pearman so he has inside help with the position. He is also close to Danny Ford.

Paul Rhodes
Age: 41
Last Position Defensive Coordinator Auburn
Born: Ankeny, Iowa
College: Missouri Western 1989
Coaching History:
1989-90 Utah State Graduate Assistant
1991 Ohio State Graduate Assistant
1992-94 Pacific Defensive Backs. Defensive Pass Coordinator (1994)
1995-99 Iowa State Inside Linebackers (1995). Secondary (1996-99)
2000-07 Pittsburgh Defensive Coordinator, secondary (2000-06). Defensive Coordinator, linebackers (2007)
2008 Auburn Defensive Coordinator. Secondary
Bowls: 6
Notes: Rhodes is considered one of the top defensive minds in the country. Last season Auburn finished 27 in the country in total defense, 52nd in rushing defense, 15th in scoring defense and 22 in pass defense. At Pittsburgh his defense finished fifth nationally in total defense in 2007. The Sporting News to name him the Big East's best defensive coordinator in its 2006 college football annual. Rhodes is close to current Clemson linebacker coach David Blackwell as the two worked together at Pittsburgh.

Kirby Smart
Age:
33 later this month
Current Position: Defensive coordinator Alabama
Born:Montgomery, AL
College: Georgia 1999
Coaching History:
1999 Georgia Graduate Assistant
2000-01 Valdosta State Defensive backs. Defensive coordinator 2001
2002-03 Florida State Graduate Assistant
2004 LSU Defensive backs
2005 Georgia Running backs
2006 Miami Dolphins Safeties
2007-08 Alabama Secondary. 2008 Defensive coordinator
Bowls: 7
Notes: Smart is thought of as one of the top young defensive minds in the country. He has benefitted from coaching with defensive coaches like Mickey Andrews and Nick Saban. Smart also has the benefit of having NFL experience. This past season Alabama was third in the nation in total defense, sixth in scoring defense, fourth in rushing defense and 21 in pass defense.

Kevin Steele
Age:
50
Current Position: Head Coach of the Defense Alabama
Born: Dillon, SC
College: Tennessee 1980
Coaching History:
1980-81 Tennessee Graduate Assistant
1982 Tennessee Outside Linebackers
1983 New Mexico State Linebacker
1984-86 Oklahoma State Linebackers, Tight Ends
1987-88 Tennessee Defensive backs
1995-98 Carolina Panthers Linebackers
1999-2002 Baylor Head Coach
2002-06 Florida State Linebackers
2007-present Alabama Head defensive coach
Notes: Steele has been a head coach in the college game and has NFL experience. He has also worked for major college powerhouses like Nebraska, Tennessee, Florida State and Alabama. This past season Alabama was third in the nation in total defense, sixth in scoring defense, fourth in rushing defense and 21st in pass defense.

Marion Hobby
Age:
42
Current Position: Duke Defensive coordinator
Born: Birmingham, AL
College: Tennessee 1990
Coaching History:
1995 Tennessee-Martin Defensive tackles
1996 Southwest Louisiana Strength and Conditioning. 1997 Defensive tackles.
1998 Tennessee Assistant Strength and conditioning
1999-2004 Ole Miss defensive line
2005 Clemson Defensive line
2006-07 New Orleans Saints defensive line
2008 Duke Defensive coordinator, defensive line
Bowls: 6
Notes: Hobby played and coached in the NFL. He made a big impression on the Clemson staff during his time here in 2005. This past year Duke was 61st in the country in total defense, 77th in rushing defense, 50th in scoring defense and 83rd in pass defense. He has a good relationship with several members of the current Clemson staff.

Comments:

Why would either of the AL assistants be interested in leaving a top 5 program to take the same job at Clemson?

My choices, in order, would be Smart or Steele, Chavis, Rhodes, Hobby.

Garverick - this doesn't make it clear, but only one of the two (Smart or Steele) or maybe neither (meaning Saban has control) have playcalling duties for the defense. The one who is lower on the totum pole could probably be had in the right situation.

MY FIRST CHOICE IS,ANYTHING THAT IS A NOTCH BETTER THAN VK.AND VERY AGRESSIVE

I would be happy with any of the above, including Hobby. From what I watched of Duke this year, Hobby maximizes his talent. Even though we beat them soundly, I thought they played good fundamental defense against us, were solid tacklers and didn't get caught out of position often. Also, I'm not promoting him above any of these guys, but is Charlie Harbison not getting any consideration?

All of the above look good to me, but young blood may be what we need. All of the younger guys have good experience, and some have either played or coached at the NFL level. It definetly brings credibility to good young players. I was dissappointed that VK had to b@tch on his way out. I know his defenses have finished ranked in the top 25, but how much are those stats are against sub-par opponents? We have too much talent on defense to be playing zone defense. Great job of Dabo to have a different defensive philosophy!

MP--I believe that J. Chavis had a short stay at Va. tech just prior to his taking the job @ Tennessee. Son't see that in his resume.

All of these guys seem like decent candidates, but I really hope Dabo hires a guy who plays an aggressive style of press man coverage. Since that is what we have heard Dabo prefers, I would be surprised to see us pick Chavis (who, from what I understand, plays a lot of zone coverage).

I think youth is good here. I would love to see what Kirby Smart could do as our DC. It would also be nice to get Marion Hobby back on the Clemson sideline.

Apparently the #1 qualification we are looking for is Tennessee Alum.... 3/5 are UT grads

Judge_Keller,

Chavis is one of the founders of press man and very aggressive defenses in the college game. He has only used zone the past few years.

You have to adjust your defense to compensate for your offense. Reggie Herring can tell you about that. VK felt like he HAD to play zone because our offense has had as many 3-&-outs as anybody the past few years.

Offense & defense do not operate in a vacuum independent of each other. For a team to be successful they have to compliment each other!

There is a reason the old saying "the best defense is a great offense" has been around so long. Smash mouth football will ALWAYS be successful, it eats the clock, scores points, keeps the other teams' O on the bench, and wears down the other team so you can dominate the 4th qtr. It also allows the D to rest so they can be aggressive when they are on the field. Alabama says hello to those that say "Danny Ford ball" can't win today!!

Did Chavis and Steele play together at Dillon High School by any chance in the 70s? If so, I bet that defense was nasty.

My favorite is Reggie Herring who is now with the Dallas Cowboys. Reggie had the fire in him like no one. Great choice. I know he still loves Clemson

All - Some great analysis and comments.
I'm worried about our weakness at safety next year. What type of system would help us with this known weakness for next year?

I do like all of the candidates and feel confident in Dabo's selection. I'm all in with whomever it is.

We've recruited very well the past few years and have some amazing talent already on campus in our secondary. we lose experience, but next year will probably be a talent upgrade there.

lol, yea, I'm sure Reggie hates seeing clemson struggle this year, but i bet he also chuckled when bowden resigned. he's human and i'd be very surprised if he didn't at least think "i told you so" at least once.

with dabo's commitment to a more traditional offense and his love of aggressive defense, it would be great seeing reggie light a danny ford style fire under some arses on our sideline again.

Posted by flatiger66 on December 10, 2008 at 09:15 PM EST #

flatiger, I usually oppose your opinions at most every turn as a natural course of thinking, but I must say I am in total agreement with your comments here. I do wonder, though, why Dabo had to twist VKs arm to get him to be more aggressive even when the offense started to get it together at season's end. I believe that is why we parted company.

VK simply loves the zone, which he and Dabo disagreed on, but VK sealed his fate the first three days after TB "resigned". He was upset and pissed TB was forced out, then even more upset HE didn't get to be interim HC. He was popping off in a big way publicly and showing his disappointment with both decisions in a VERY public way! That was dumb and classless. I can only imagine how big of an arse he must of been being around the AD offices. A lot of people knew he as history within only a few days of TB leaving. Even IF Dabo had asked him to stay her would of left.

Posted by flatiger66 on December 11, 2008 at 12:29 AM EST #

I think we can do better than VK. I never liked his "bend but don't break" style. I think that is why we got burned so many times on the 3rd and 25's so much.

Posted by Big Tuna on December 11, 2008 at 04:50 AM EST #

I agree with flagtiger66. Short of being the HC himself, I think VK would have ended up at his alma mater with Bill Snyder anyways. He is already assistant HC there and probably thinks he might end up with a Jimbo/Muschamp type deal if they have even moderate success.

Good god, holy alternative universe theory Batman, people publicly agreeing with me on Tnet. I need to write something controversial cause we just can't have this kind of thing going on around here, it might create a space-time continuum disturbance, or worse!! ;-)

I hear that Charlie Harbison is a candidate for DC. His stats are very good.
