Dabo; Bowden; Spence; TDP; Players; Recruits; Fans
Dabo; Bowden; Spence; TDP; Players; Recruits; The Fans
What a crazy day Monday turned out to be. I just wanted to give some quick thoughts on a bunch of subjects that came to the forefront Monday:
Dabo
I want to get into more detail about Dabo later this week and in the coming weeks but I wanted to share a little story today. The most intelligent man I know is Dr. Byron Harder, Clemson’s long time team physician. Dr. Harder made a 1600 on the SAT and got all of the answers right on the first millionaire winner on “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire” before they put the choices up. He is a genius that reads the dictionary daily.
I respect Dr. Harder as much as anyone I know but not only for his intelligence. I respect his judgment. He told his son, Bill, who you may remember from his Clemson basketball days, about Dabo four years ago. I remember Bill sharing his father’s thoughts with me soon after. Dr. Harder has been at Clemson since the 1960s and was recently inducted into the Clemson University Hall of Fame. Dr. Harder has been around every Clemson coach in every sport for over 30 years. He has seen the good and the bad and he has seen success and failure. It was his wisdom that noticed something special about Dabo very early in his time here.
Dr. Harder told his son that Dabo has “it”. He said he has the personality and the charisma. He said Dabo had enough fire and enough substance. But he also said that Dabo was a leader and he was a high character guy.
Dr. Harder realized early in Dabo’s potential to be a head coach and I was pleased to see Dr. Harder and Mrs. Harder at Dabo’s press conference last night.
Dabo-Part II
I think it says a lot that Dabo was picked by the athletic director to be on the presidential task force on the AARC issue. I understand he impressed the administration with his hard work to make Clemson even better.
In a few short years, Dabo has impressed a bunch of people in this community.
I remember hearing about his wife, Kathleen’s scare from a medical issue. Dabo and his family handled the situation with class and their faith was evident throughout that process. Kathleen is 100% healthy now and she is a major part of his success as well.
More Dabo Notes
When Clemson first hired Dabo Swinney, I remembered him as a player and a coach that recruited well at Alabama but I did not know him personally. I picked up the phone and called his good friend Danny Pearman. The former Clemson tight end coached with Dabo at Alabama and he gave Dabo rave reviews. He told me Dabo is the most optimistic person he has ever been around. Pearman said Dabo thought he was going to sign every prospect he was recruiting and he was going to win every game he ever coached. Pearman told me that Dabo will be a hit in Clemson because he is exactly what Clemson was about. He said Dabo was a great husband and a great father. He said he was a spiritual leader and a great molder of young men. Pearman said his alma mater should be proud to have Dabo as the new wide receiver coach and he would serve Clemson well.
At his press conference last night I noticed a couple of things. Remember that Dabo woke up Monday morning as the wide receiver coach then a few hours later walked into a room to face reporters as the head coach of the Tigers.
First, I thought Dabo hit a home run in Monday’s press conference. The main reason he was so good Monday night was the fact that Dabo is comfortable in his own skin. He is straight forward and honest. Dabo was Dabo Monday night and that was all he needed to be.
Also, he said the right things. He was polished and he said exactly what Clemson fans wanted to hear. He sounded like a leader and inspired me to follow.
Bowden
I commend Tommy Bowden on handling today’s events in a first class way. He did it first class for nine and a half years and continued to handle himself well all of the way to the finish line. I personally think Bowden stepped down today because he thought it was best for the program. I will always remember him as a classy man.
He is the third winningest coach in Clemson history and belongs in the Clemson Athletic Hall of Fame.
I personally hope he and Linda stay in the area. Clemson will be a better place if Tommy and Linda are a part of the community.
Spence
Rob Spence is one of the greatest men I have ever met. His faith is as strong as anyone I have ever been around. One of the few people more impressive than Spence is his terrific wife Susan. I will be forever grateful that I was able to learn from them and hope I can call on them as friends in the future. Today, I hurt more for Rob and Susan than anyone in this situation. They will lean upon their faith and I know they will emerge even stronger.
TDP
I was impressed by the leadership Terry Don Phillips showed during the past few days. He has been working tirelessly over the past few days and I commend him for his vision.
I think Phillips is serious when he says he will give Dabo full consideration. I also believe he will be entertaining a ton of national and regional interest in this job. Clemson is a good job and if given the freedom, Phillips will make a good hire.
The Players
I understand the players are shocked and I hurt for them today. They learned a hard lesson that life gives us today and they had to learn it at an early age. I would not make any negative judgments on any statements they make this week. Remember these are young people and they have a lot on their plate at this time.
The Recruits
I don’t blame any prospect for anything they say at this point. They are also in shock. Remember signing day is a long way off. Be patient.
The Fans
I must admit I have not been myself lately. I have been down in the dumps and depressed. I have been hurting since the Maryland game. Hurting.
However, after I sat in Dabo’s press conference the hurt was gone. I can’t wait to get into the Valley early Saturday and I am not going to leave the game with a voice. I am all in with Dabo and will do everything a fan can do to make the coaches and players know how much I am behind them Saturday.
Clemson has been divided as of late. But Saturday I hope we can all come together and be one again. I can’t wait to greet this team and Dabo when they reach the top of the Hill Saturday. I can’t wait to see the Valley full Saturday. I can’t wait to hear it rockin’ again.
Clemson is a family and it personally feels so good to be back. I can’t wait to see the rest of the family Saturday.

Mickey - Thanks for your updates. Sorry some on Tigernet turned on you because they don't understand what being a reporter is all about. You did your job and some of us are thankful. Keep up the good work.
As a side note, I do enjoy your blog, but really wish you'd keep your politics to yourself. I do care what you think about our football team, but could care less what you think about Sarah Palin.

Dr. Harder is a wonderful person. My dad and Dr. Harder's wife, Mickey, grew up together. While I was at Clemson, being from the Lowcountry, I was lucky to have two wonderful family friends, and great Clemson families, that I could call on anytime day or night if need be, Dr. Harder & Colonel Lew Jordan. Clemson is lucky to have both those families!
Pearman was a friend of mine in school, and he knows as much as anyone the biggest thing we are missing is the toughness and swagger we had under Ford. It really is astounding all the connections we have to Alabama. From Frank Howard, to Ford, to Dabo, and so many in between. Dabo even mentioned some of those from the past, including McCorvey and Oliver! Since Ford, we have lacked an identity and fire. We need those back! Is it Dabo? We'll see. If not, Bud Foster and Will Muschamp are the kind of guys we need to look at!!

I've been hard on the past situation happening @ CLEMSON and Tommy Bowden. I too as are most CLEMSON People passionate folks. I do feel for Tommy Bowden as a human being and his family, however he was Coaching in a sport and @ a program that has not had very much success over the last 18 years , constant success anyway. I like thousands of others @ Clemson , Sports Writers all over the U.S., thought this "WOULD BE THE YEAR", so @ 3-3 and an Offense that looks completely anemic,go figure. However the way Tommy handled it and saw that maybe him being gone might start a spark with "HIS PLAYERS" showed me more of a really good FOOTBALL COACH than I never realized was there! SO COACH BOWDEN I HOPE YOUR FUTURE ENDEVORS WILL BE SUCESSFUL! Mark M. Smith

If Dabo is not retain as head coach after this season then all of the recruiting ties we have all go down the drain. The only one that should have left was Spence. TB you will be missed dearly.

Mickey, While I almost always enjoy your blog, and always read it I really wish you would step away from the FAITH thing when discussing a coach's merit. If you have to then perhaps you would be more comfortable at that school just up the road in Greenville. I have two brothers-in-law that are BJU grads, and you often sound way too mush like them. I watched the Coach Swinney press conf. last night & I really liked the way the coach handeled it. He seems to have the fire that we need to be sucessful on the field . I wish him much sucess & hope that TDP gives him consideration for the Head JoB . GO TIGERS

This Saturday might just be the loudest and most excited that Death Valley has been since the Miami game. I'm pumped.

albundy13,
I am sorry if you are offended by my emphasis on faith but I cannot lie. It is important to me and this blog will always reflect that. Sorry. Hopefully you can overlook that segment when it arises.

MICKEY PLEASE TELL ALL OF YOUR READERS THAT DO NOT LIKE STORIES AND COMMENTS ABOUT YOUR FAITH THAT THEY DON'T HAVE TO
READ IT. A PERSON'S FAITH IS WHO THEY ARE, IT IS A PART OF THEM. GOD AND FOOTBALL CAN GO TOGETHER!

I don't believe in God, but I don't have a problem with Mickey's writing about faith.
I haven't noticed him preaching or trying to convert those of us who don't believe---he is just stating the facts as he knows them about the faith of the people who are important to the Clemson "faithful".

Im sure Susan understands you were just doing your job. She knows you are a man of great faith. Lets just all get behind Dabo, fill up DV, and beat those Yellowjackets. Clemson 35 gatech 17
Go Tigers!

I,too agree that Mickey and Spence mention their faith way too many times they speak or blog!!! I don't care who YOU are--only about what this blog and a coach is about --Clemson Football!! Leave the rest out.
Aside from that --- Great blog!! I too will be screaming my support for Dabo and every ONE of our players this Saturday!! GO TIGERS!!!

Tell us about this confrontation you got into with a coach.

In 10 years of press conferences, TB always sounded limp to me. But I loved the energy, optimism, and enthusiasm that Dabo exuded. He sounds like a PLAYER'S coach (like Pete Carroll or Mark Richt)... Go balls-out AND have fun. He must be smart and tough because he fired Spence. And he's giving Korn a shot.
Obviously Bowden did not "step down" because they’re paying him until 12/2, and the full $3.5M buyout. TB used his AD buddy at Arkansas to coerce Clemson. So if TB were a decent man, he wouldn't take the full $3.5M. He did nothing to earn it, and he's already independently wealthy.
Who was responsible for granting TB a $4M buyout a few months ago? Fire THAT guy.
I feel worse for Spence. But he made a lot of money and he will land on his feet.
The players should have new hope and play hard for the love of the game, the team, & the NFL.
Clemson would have lost recruits if something hadn’t been done. Winning matters.
Hope lives! Go Tigers! 11-3!

The support that is being genereated now surprises me . Why could we not say what we had to say on the manyh blogs that are out and leave it. If you ask me the team did not give up the fans gave up on the team. That part to me sucks and to say that you are going to be extra supportive when actually we should have been supportive of the tigers all along. What gives!!!! If you are a true fan you are a fan regardless and support the team.

Razz,
Nothing personal but are telling us that if you were let go from your present employe you would not expect what was negotiated in your salary package upon leaving the company. I take it the severance package that might have be included would leave on the table. I bet not. I know I would bee looking for what was promised to me regardless. That is a contract that is not carried out is grounds for legal action if placed in writing which I'm sure it was. This kind of talk amazes me. LOL!!! I guess we all should work for free and expect nothing. I think not.

I think Dabo's news conference has excited all of us Clemson alumni and fans! He sounded like a coach who wants to get back to smash-mouth football. I hope we go 6-0 over the next 2 months, although that would be extremely difficult. If we end up hiring a new head coach, I hope at least Dabo and Napier are retained. Both of them are the kind of winners we need, especially in a transition period.
Posted by EGTiger83 on October 14, 2008 at 02:28 PM EDT #
AirJockey: One could argue that Tommy Bowden used his buddy to bluff Clemson out of $3.5M fair and square, and so he should take the full buyout. But is that in line with Christ's teachings? Personally, I would not take the whole buy-out if I were in Bowden's position. But that's just my morality. He certainly has the LEGAL right to take it all.

Atheist that I am, I missed the fact that Arkansas is mentioned in the Bible---as are football contract buyouts for that matter.

"In line with" Christ teachings on football contracts. :) There, I corrected my error.
Let's face it, he was fired. Just that no one likes to say that about a decent, high profile person anymore.
If he actually quit and TDP will be sending him the 3.5 million anyway, then TDP should be fired. Excuse me, should "have a parting of the ways" with Clemson.

With all the fond things Mickey said about TB and RS I can't believe they are gone. (sobbing to myself) I know TB leaves with a pocket full of change, not so sure about RS and they knew that this day would come eventually. Very few coaches get to ride off into the sunset own their own terms. I am certain TB's pain is short lived however when those buyout checks start hitting the ol' bank account. Goodbye Tommy and Rob, goodluck and goodnight now !!!!!!!!!!

All this disention concerning TB and RS has brought out the good and bad in each of us. Whether you supported the team or not before is unimportant but is is very important to turn the page and come together as true Tiger Fans. The past is gone. Let it stay gone!! We know something (?) new is on the horizon; all of us hope that it is change for the better. This change needs to be allowed to take place without all the venom that so many have exhibited at each other, the coaches and the administration. Lets forgive, forget and move on.

Stop crying for TB. College football is big business, and TB is an adult from a coaching family. He knows the deal! This "poor TB" crap is nonsense! If this were an SEC school, or any program with Top 20 aspirations, TB would of been fired YEARS ago! If TB were a corporate CEO instead of a football CEO he would of been fired long ago. All this Christian BS and all the intangibles you TB lovers use to support TB are the reasons he wasn't fired long before now. Ultimately it's like TDP said, sooner or later you have to perform, which in football means win!
In 10 years, TB had multiple staff changes, but couldn't get over the hump. Simply firing Spence was NOT the solution. He NEVER developed a very good offensive line. His record in a weak ACC was barely over .500, and his bowl record, and record at home when ranked vs. non-ranked teams was pathetic! The only big wins he ever had came when his job was on the line.

Regarding recruiting - If you think we were going to have a great recruiting class this year you are blind. Lotson and others were already looking elsewhere! Bringing in a quality coach will resolve the recruiting and we won't miss a beat, especially if the new coach retains Dabo & Napier to coordinate recruiting!
So please stop crying over TB. He had his chance, but wasn't good enough. He is still leaving Clemson a multi-millionnaire! I wish we could all under-perform at our jobs yet be paid so well!

"I would not make any negative judgments on any statements they make this week. Remember these are young people and they have a lot on their plate at this time."
I will have to strongly disagree with you one this one point Mickey. Cullen Harper's comments were stupid, disrespectful, selfish, thoughtless, low class, and did I mention stupid.
#1. You don't pile on when a man is down.
#2. You especially don't pile on a man when he's down while at the same time that you show yourself to be no better a performer nor leader yourself.
I have thought about this and I think Dabo should consider removing him from the team altogether. It would send a signal that needs to be sent.
