Friday E-Mail Bag
Each Friday I publish your comments and answer your questions. To submit a comment or questions please e-mail me at mickeyplyler@hotmail.com.

Mickey,
Can you comment on a few players for me, and their future at Clemson. Jeff Ogren, Akeem Robinson and Josh Miller, Ray Ray McElrathbey. I have a feeling these guys are just basicly waiting to graduate. Also, is Clemson STILL recruiting Hargrave WR, Dwight Jones?

Thanks for ya time.

Wayne

Wayne,

Ogren is starting to work harder and will get a longer look in the spring. Unfortunately for him he will have Aaron Kelly, Tyler Grisham, Rendrick Taylor, Jacoby Ford, Nelson Faerber, Xavier Dye, Brandon Clear, Brandon Ford and Marquan Jones to fight against for playing time next season.

Robinson is a great kid and a hard worker. He lacks pass receiving skills and is a little behind Palmer and Lithicum but I think Robinson still a player that has a future.

Ray Ray must come back from the injury but he will have a chance in the spring. He will have to battle Chambers and the freshman for the third tailback spot.

Dwight Jones will sign with North Carolina.

Mickey,
If you haven't noticed Mickey, take a look at this year's basketball poster...down towards the bottom.....

Together Everyone Achieves More

somewhat of a cliche and used a good bit in corporate America, but, I think it says volumes about how Coach Purnell and his Staff approach this game.

Coach Purnell and his Staff and TEAM are on the "cusp" of accomplishing greatness and I'm looking forward to witnessing all of it. Should be fun, to say the least.

Thanks for the blog....
Dennis

Dennis,

We have that poster in my son’s room and noticed it the first time I saw it. It is refreshing to see the team concept.

Hey Mick ,
Are any of the CU assistants getting any interview requests so far? I really hope we can hang on to Dabo, Napier, Blackwell and Rumph. I personally don't see the older guys like Scott or West leaving, IMO.

Kevin

Kevin,
None have interviewed so far but I would not be surprised to see some turnover on the staff. We won’t know until late December or early January.

Mickey,

Win it or spin it. Very well put Mickey.

I've been a part of this rivalry for 35 years. Fortunately, I've enjoyed 24 victories over the "spinners" but this year absolutely takes the "award" for the most outrageous spins in history.

How can "they" be so enamored with their mighty SEC one day and then make absurd statements about getting out the next......which has absolutely nothing to do with Clemson taking it to them for the 64th time in 105 games. And, yes, I'll say it .... we should have beaten them by 4 touchdowns !

Wonder what will happen to the masses when they see the billboard on I-26 just East of Columbia? Likely, many will jump off the interstates into the Broad River (and there are optional jump locations)....

Thanks for sharing Mickey...and to all you delusional gamecocks, BACK AWAY FROM THE EDGE !

Dennis

Dennis,
Spin is something we all do but it sure is nice not to have to rely on it. What is this about a billboard? Just kidding.

Mickey,
A player signs with a school, can not get in and goes to a prep school to qualify. Can other schools now recruit him again. I am sure you know Dwight Jones signed with North Carolina, did not qualify and went to prep school. It sure would be nice to sign him after the fact. Do you have any idea why Clemson was not allowed to sign him, and then send him to prep school.

Jack

Jack,
A player is free to sign with any school if he did not enroll in August but Jones is not going to Clemson. The AARC cooked that goose already.

Mick,
Thanks for your time in reading my email. I hope you are able to answer my question.

I will be in Myrtle Beach a few days next week for work. I am planning on trying to take in a practice or two for the North-South game. I was already planning on going to the game; being down there for work will just allow me more time to play around.

Who are we currently recruiting, involved with, or watching next week at the North-South game?

I would just like to know for fans-sake if there might be any future Tigers in the mix.

Also, I will be going to Columbia this Saturday for the Byrnes-Summerville game and the Chester-Wilson game. Anyone in either of those games have a chance to be a future Tiger 2008 and beyond?

Also, do you have the same such list for the Shrine Bowl.

Thanks again and I appreciate all you do for Clemson.

Go Tigers,
Neil

Neil,
In Myrtle Beach I would watch Jonathan Willard. He is the only player that I think will eventually be a Tiger.

In Columbia check out Marcus Lattimore of Byrnes. The sophomore running back will be one of the nation’s top running backs in the class of 2010.

The Shrine Bowl list would include:
South Carolina-DaQuan Bowers, Andre Ellington, Brandon Ford, Dalton Freeman, Marquan Jones and Kenneth Page.

North Carolina-E.J Abrams-Ward and R.J. Mattes.

Hey Mickey
I was wanting to ask has Clemson’s out of conference schedule for next season been released. And are we going to open with Alabama next season. Thanks.
Travis

Travis,
Clemson’s schedule will not be announced in January but the Alabama game is still in the works. Both schools want it to work and they are working on the Georgia Dome availability. In the end I think it works out. The Tigers are scheduled to play Central Florida on September 13 and South Carolina on November 22. Clemson is also scheduled to play Louisiana Tech on the road next year.

Mickey,
It feels better than GOOD !! '08 is a leap year and I'm going to make a special point to take advantage of the extra day of celebrating another Tiger Victory over our In-State Rival.....February 29, 2008 will be a special day of celebrating another tremendous victory over the chickens.

What feels even better than Good as well, you ask ???....it has got to be the reaction of the Chickens......these" enamored with the Southeastern Conference chickens "are now saying they should get out of the SEC because they will never be able to beat FL, TN, GA, LSU, AR, etc....heck, they can't even beat their in-state rival with any consistency.

IT DOES FEEL GOOD !! 23 to 21 SCOREBOARD !!

Dennis

Dennis,
Thanks for the e-mail.

Mickey,

Love the show, but only get to listen from about 7:55 to 8:30 every day, so some of these ramblings may have been discussed already on the show. Just wanted to voice my opinion.

1) At the beginning of the season I think it is safe to say that Tiger Nation was expecting an 8-4 record and 9-3 at best. Why are we talking about the Bowden and the hot seat sitting at 9-3 with a win over Carolina? Every year it is the WAY we lose the games and the position that we are in that causes all the grumblings in Tiger Nation. No one expected Harper to be as good as he has been, but when he exploded at the beginning of the season then expectations shot through the roof and he we are again, grumbling. We lose to a below average team in GT on the road, crap up special teams against VT and have ridiculous play calling at time versus BC and Carolina. No excuse that we shouldn’t have had 31 points by the end of the 3rd quarter against SC. Bad play calling and time management of the clock kept them in the game into the 4th quarter.

2) Only in Clemson will you find us complaining after beating our rival. Carolina could have less than 100 yards offense, but as long as they win they would be happy. We are clearly at another level than they are in football. We are 2 points better than them, screw David from Spartanburg. Two weeks in a row we are passing the ball on 2nd and goal at the 2, at the 2 yard line with James Davis and we are passing?!?!?! At the 2 yard line against one of the worst rush defenses in the nation and we are passing the ball?!?!?! If you can’t get in on 3 tries from the two against the Carolina by using Davis, you don’t deserve to be playing football.

3) I saw Brandon Pilgrim at Waffle House after the game and then as I was leaving Aaron Kelly came in as well. Class acts, neither one of them came in looking around for attention, they just sat down to eat. I spoke to Aaron and Brandon and both of them were extremely thankful for the compliments and did not act boastful about their position in the community, class acts for sure.

4) Seriously, if you don’t believe in the Chicken Curse after this year as a Carolina fan or a Clemson fan. What will it take for you to believe in it? Honestly, 6-1 to 6-6 #6 to no votes at all in a matter of 5 games. Come on this is the perfect evidence that the Curse is real, alive and kicking.

Thanks guys, and keep up the good work. Go Tigers!

Joel

Joel,
Thanks for the e-mail. To comment on questions:
1-I don’t think Clemson’s fan base is a whole lot different than most of the college football powers. Fans sometimes think they are entitled to wins and just can’t understand how their teams could lose.
2-I agree. You will never find me complain about a win. I will take a pretty win, ugly win, average win or whatever kind of win you want to give me.
3-I understand those are two great young men as are most of the guys Bowden and his staff have brought into the program.
4-Ole Pitchfork might have done a long-term number on our feathered friends.

Mickey,
Has anyone given CTB any credit for the two blocked punts Sat. night? He gets all the blame on special teams just wondering if he gets any of the credit?
Jason

Jason,
Great point. If Bowden gets the blame for getting punts blocked for the Tigers then he should get some credit for blocking the opponents kicks. But we all know that is not how it works.

Mickey,

A win over USC, even an ugly win, makes us all feel so good. Had we lost the game against the Gamecocks, that would have been a heartbreaking loss with all of the missed opportunities. Thankfully, the Tigers prevailed at the end.

The following is part of a post that was posted by a Clemson fan on the web.

While watching the game and again on replay last night I noticed Davis and Spiller shaking their heads last night coming out of a huddle in the first half.

The first was Davis after leaving a sideline huddle with Dabo and everyone. He came back out onto the field it seemed shaking his head with disgust. Seemed like he was ticked at a crappy play call. This was the play when they had the ball around the 10 yard line and scored on a pass to Nelson for the TD.

Then towards the end of the first half with about 40 seconds left when we drove down close Spiller came out of a sideline huddle with the coaches and was a little more noticeably animated with something. He was very upset, waving his arms and shaking his head.

I don't know the specifics like this fan, but I clearly did see Spiller appearing to be very upset about what looked like a play call while on the field. We all love those two guys being on our team, but are they getting too big for their britches? Did you notice any of these negative gestures by our two players?

A final comment. The defense played well enough this year for us to be 12-0 right now instead of 9-3, and my congratulations to them for an outstanding year.

David

David,
I did notice the gestures. I would chalk it up to just the competitive nature of the players. Davis and Spiller are good kids that want to win.

I also think the defense played outstanding the entire season and I think the future is even brighter on defense.

Mickey,
I, like you, entered this season with no expectations. As the season progressed I followed the Tigers with growing hopes, only to have them dashed by the GT and VT games. Unlike previous years, the loses did not rip my heart out as much as before, because I have grown calluses from all the previous loses and in the end, it’s just a game. My question or comment is:

“What is the correct perception of this team and program and what do you take from the USC game?

Was the game against USC a hard fought victory against a fired up rival that needed a great effort and high intensity to overcome a vaunted foe?

or

Was it a lucky win against a lesser talented opponent, a team unable to finish a game, unable to execute and completely playing down to the competition?

I really feel like there is a “it” or “spark” that is missing from the program – a person or value that is not stepping up or being taught. This is the third(?) year that the tigers have not gotten over the hump. They clearly have the talent to be a dominating team in the ACC and nation, but something is missing and I don’t know who to blame or point out, but “it” is certainly missing. After the USC game, I didn’t feel relieved that we had won, more along the lines of being extremely disappointed that the Tigers had allowed USC to even be in the game, that it had even come down to a kick to win. I don’t fault the effort of the players and denigrate them in any fashion, but this is frustrating. There is got to be an underlying level of frustration in the Tiger nation waiting to bubble to the surface, waiting to say – what the heck? Do we give TB more time and assume he will get over the hump because he has gotten us this far or do we pull a Tampa Bay Bucs and fire a Dungy for a Gruden hoping that a different attitude with the same talent can get us to the “promised land”?

What’s the correct perception and how much do our expectations taint our perceptions?

Thanks,

Eric – CU ’90

PS – please print more letters from USC kooks like cockyTJ – classic stuff! Lol

Eric,
Good e-mail. I think there is not a clear answer to your question. I think the program is on good shape and I think it is getting better. They have lost some games they should have won. You do have to give the staff credit for recruiting such good players. Bowden needs to win the conference soon but the program continues to make strides so firing is not a factor this year. I think we have to look at the future and still feel good. There is so much instability in college football and now is not the time to make a move.
