Friday E-Mail Bag

Friday E-Mail Bag
Each Friday I publish your comments and answer your questions. To submit a comment or questions please e-mail me at mickeyplyler@hotmail.com.

Three quick notes for this weekend. A lot of fans will be coming to town this weekend and I wanted to ask that you support three things on this football weekend. First, Tom Winkopp and his people will have an open house at Valley Walk (behind the Esso Club) Saturday from 1-7 PM. Come by and learn about their most exciting project ever, Highpointe. Second, the women’s volleyball team leads the ACC and their final home game is tonight at 7:00 PM at Jervey Gym. They would love your support. Finally, the Clemson basketball team is special and they will play ODU Sunday at 2:00 PM in Littlejohn. Please make plans to stay in town and support the best basketball team I have seen at Clemson. Thanks for your consideration.

Hey Mickey...great work on the blog...."injuries are a part of the game", although used continually, does remain a fact....ask Southern Cal and more recently, ask the folks down in Columbia. Injuries are why quality depth is so crucial and I feel that the Tigers have an edge over BC in this regard.

As to the "pressure".....it is definitely real for me and for good reason. I found out on Wednesday of this week that I won a contest (sponsored by Dr. Pepper) that is out of this world....trip for two to the ACCCG....air, hotel, ground trans, meals, parties, tickets to the game, etc....why the pressure you ask ???

Being a huge TIGER FAN, need I say more. GO TIGERS ! BEAT BC !!

Thanks Mickey.....

Dennis

Dennis,

I know DeJuan Tribble is a great player but I would love to have Jacoby Ford available. I think a key will be how effective BC’s linebackers can be on their injured ankles. Also their long snapper injury might be a factor. Congrats on the contest. Hopefully the Tigers can win their contest and join you in Jacksonville.

Mickey,
I think Ray Ray would be a prime example of letting these guys know what "real pressure" is! Trying to rescue your little brother's future! Or James Davis and CJ Spiller trying to be the best father they can be! I am very excited about this game, but i want our guys to play fast and loose! I want 11 guys out there wanting to be the one that makes the play, not 11 guys hoping someone else will make a play! The tigers can't play fast and loose if they are scared of messing up! GO TIGERS!
Chris

Chris,
Great point about Ray Ray. It does put things into perspective. It took me a long time to realize perspective on things and I joke that really I was not an adult until the last year or so. Don’t get me wrong, I love to win and I think competition is one of the best things we have in this country but my perspective is different. I used to get nervous for football, basketball or baseball games. Heck on the golf course I would occasionally get the heart flowing a little faster. However, as corny as it may sound 9/11 was a big change for me. I sat in Death Valley and watched that halftime show and watched Senator McCain’s video and it changed me. You are right about playing loose and playing without fear. You should never standing over a golf shot scared of hooking the ball out of bounds. The Tigers need to stay focused on the process and not the outcome.

Hello Mickey:

I wanted to follow up on your comments about Death Valley. It really is a special place. When I lived in Johnstone Hall many years ago, it was always pretty cool to be able to walk over to the stadium for a game rather than having to drive somewhere off campus. I remember the construction of the upper deck, sending 80,000 balloons and so many other fond memories of Clemson football in that stadium. Go Tigers!

Kirk

Kirk,

We are lucky to have our stadium on campus too. I still drive by the stadium about four or five days a week just to get a peak.

Mick,
“What is competitive greatness? It´s being at your best when your best is needed. It´s enjoying the challenge when things become difficult, even very difficult.

True competitors know it´s exhilarating to be involved in something that´s very challenging. They don´t fear it. They seek it. Is it fun to do that which is ordinary, easy, simple, something anyone can do? Not at all.

Yet most of the tasks we do in our everyday lives are very simple. Anybody could do them. They will not produce the joy that comes from being involved with something that challenges your body, mind, and spirit.”-John Wooden

This football team has sought out this championship and they have not backed down in the face of adversity. I said it last week and I’ll say it again. I am proud of this team of men for the character they have brought to Clemson. This team will bring their best this week again. Will the fans do the same? We owe it to this group of Tigers. They’ve earned it!
Oregon thinks their stadium is louder than ours. We can end that controversy this week at 7:45 pm on Saturday night. Not only should we break the noise record that they now claim. We should do it for 60 minutes. Death Valley is known for “the most exciting 25 seconds in college football”. Why does it have to be just 25 seconds? Our fans can make it 3600 seconds. After Saturday, BC needs to remember Clemson forever as the place where they spent 60 minutes of Hell!!!

David,
The last two weeks I struggle to get to Saturday because of your e-mails. It is hard enough to wait with the anticipation and then you throw some John Wooden on me. How do you expect me to concentrate on the rest of my work week if you keep sending me these motivational e-mails. Stop it now. It can’t get here fast enough!

Mickey,

Regarding your statement that "I am not sure anyone could have ever envisioned this type of season for a first year starter at quarterback," I refer you to my Aug 30 email to you. Nothing Cullen has done has surprised me. He has worked harder, studied longer, and been more patient than probably any Clemson player before him. He is smart, talented, and just a great kid. And it won't bother him a bit if he continues right on through next year flying under the radar, but I don't expect him to be so lucky.

You made another comment after the third or forth game that you had every confidence in the staff to put the right people in the right places. I think we would all like to ask the staff why Cullen didn't get an opportunity last year when it became evident that Proctor's confidence was shattered. I don't buy in to the line that he wasn't ready. I think maybe he just wasn't properly prepared by the staff. But I do think the staff is a little smarter now along those lines.

Can't wait until Saturday night. GO TIGERS!

Allen

Allen,
Great e-mail. I have apologized to Harper on the radio for doubting him. He has had an unbelievable season and needs to reap every benefit he can from it. However, I hope he continues to play with a chip on his shoulder. I still can’t imagine why he did not play last season.

Mickey,

Giving Spur-God two weeks to prepare is not good. Plus, SC must win to go
to a bowl. Not good, either. I would hate to beat BC and then lose to SC.
The SC game is decidedly in their favor.

Also, remember when the women's basketball team was winning 20-25 games a
year. Any chance of getting Coach Davis back? I know we're young and have
injuries, but can McKinney get it done? Losing to Western Carolina is not
acceptable.

Here's hoping Death Valley will be absolutely nuts on Saturday night.

Rick

Rick,
Clemson had two weeks last year and lost. I think USC has bigger issues than the open date. They have issues along both lines of scrimmage.

The athletic department has done a lot of good and some bad in recent years but nothing worse than the Jim Davis decision. They dropped the ball there and individuals should be held accountable for that.

Mickey,

I'm an ol graduate now located in south Alabama (commonly referred to as LA). Most of my viewing of the Tigers is when I can get them on TV. Watching today, with all the jumping, yelling, etc., it appears that something is missing. Just a thought, but, what about a TIGER RAG to wave in circles as band plays Tiger Rag etc. Fans are jumping with hands in the air, however, if 82,000 were dressed in orange and waving an orange hand towel (golf towel) it would appear to me to be better. I'm not speaking of one of the little Tiger Rag handkerchiefs, I mean something to wave in a circle that can be seen on TV. In August & September, could be handy as a sweat towel also.

Your thoughts!
Bill---Class of 64

Bill,

In your state both Alabama and Auburn have the pom-poms throughout the stands and I guess that is OK. Sometimes TV does not do the crowd noise justice though. Anything that would promote more orange is fine with me. Hopefully we can get this Clemson-Alabama game on the schedule in Atlanta next year.

Comments:

A little disappointed no emails were directed towards the basketball team. I have to say that Olgesby and Stitt carried the team last night and it just shows how great those two can be in the future.

I'm excited about the three core sports this year... should be a great year for the Tigers!

The only thing worse than towels, rags, or pom-poms is "thunder sticks". I've always thought towel-waving to be one of the sorriest gimmicks in sports. I laugh out loud whenever I hear someone say "Terrible Towel" during a Steelers game...how can a sportscaster say that with a straight face?

Tiger rags in people hands would quiet the clapping. We tried those stupid blow up noise sticks and that game was super quiet. Leave the hands open for more noise!!
