Mickey,

I keep reading scrimmage reports that log Tribble Reese with the longest run from scrimmage. I believe the latest scrimmage logged him with a 70 yard run. I’m curious about this stat. Is he that fast? What kind of play is he running? How is this happening? You know anything about these long runs?

Thanks and love your blog,

Brian

Brian,

Reese has looked better but I would not expect 70-yard runs. He is not a burner but instead he is more of a passer. I think he is a very good third team quarterback but there is a difference between his skill set and Harper’s and Korn’s. One of the reasons that could contribute to his numbers is the fact that he usually is running with the third team offense against the third team defense.

Mickey,

I continue to enjoy your daily blogs Mickey...thanks....

I have a good friend that is quite knowledgeable when it comes to football. He actually played at Jacksonville State (AL) under Coach Pell and he continues to be involved in football as a volunteer coach at JL Mann. Moreover, he has followed Willie Korn thru his HS years and recently related to me that, in his opinion, Korn is the absolute best quarterback he has ever seen. He compares Korn to Pat Sullivan in terms of athletic ability, field presence, and smarts but feels that Korn's most prominent attribute is his leadership skill and magnetism.

My friend and I agree that we'll just have to wait and see how Korn's career will unfold. We both feel Korn will play some this year but Harper will be the "guy". Should injury (ugghhh) put Harper down, then Korn will be the "guy" and has the maturity and God given talent to handle the job, regardless of what history tells us.

Thanks again and keep up the interesting blogs!

Dennis

Dennis,

Thanks for the info. I had one Clemson coach tell me Thursday that Korn is the best true freshman quarterback he has ever seen. But he also said that Harper is holding off Korn and he expects Harper to be the starter until he stumbles. I think the staff feels very comfortable with either at this point. This is a position that should be improved this season and the long-term outlook is outstanding.

Mickey,

Many thanks for the blog. It is one of the must reads of my day. I really like our defensive staff but am concerned with how far off the Db’s line up from the opposing teams receivers. I am still trying to forget the nightmares I have from the Maryland game where they had way too much cushion on their short passes. Do you think there are plans to put the backs up close and make the receivers work to complete their route? I like an attacking defense and it seems to me we are more of a reacting defense.
Thanks,

Steve

Steve,

The corners this season are better cover guys but I still think you will see a majority of zone coverage. The coverage should be better but don’t expect Clemson to try to lock up in bump and run, tight man coverage.

Hello Mickey:

According to an espn.com article by Mark Schlabach, Clemson has been among the most overrated teams of the past 10 years. Sadly, I have to agree.

Most overrated teams in last 10 years:
1. Florida State (-63)
2. Tennessee (-58)
3. Washington (-42)
4. Miami (-35)
T5. Ohio State (-34)
T5. Nebraska (-34)
7. Florida (-33 1/2)
8. Michigan (-25)
9. Texas (-24)
10. Clemson (-22)

Best,

Kirk

Kirk,

It seems like six of those teams have won national titles in recent years. I would love to be included with those programs every year.

Mickey:

First of all, I want to let you know that I appreciate the quality of the show you produce each day. It makes for an enjoyable ride to work from Anderson to Greenville.

I wanted to ask a couple of question that I think are best suited for e-mail versus calling your show. The reason is that I don't think too many Clemson fans want a Georgia Tech fan wasting air time while they can be speculating about whether or not they should defer the kick off to the 2nd half!!
As a GT fan, I am obviously biased when listening to your show. It seems to me that you are not too high on our team this year or, in a bigger sense, the overall direction of our program. An example of this is how you ranked GT in each of your unit rankings. I was not able to hear your final rankings each day, but one that stood out to me was that you ranked our Offensive and Defensive lines VERY low (#6 and #9, I think).

Most national publications have GT with the best (or at least top 2) offensive and defensive lines in the conference. Collegefootballnews.com ranks both units as #1 (not that they are always right). Athlon, I think, ranked both units as top 5 units in the country. Why the difference?

Here are some other points about the direction of the program:
- One of only 6 schools that has been to 12 straight bowls
- 12 straight seasons of +.500 record in the ACC (longest of any school)
- One of only 4 I-A schools with a .500 record or better in conference since 1995
- Since 1995, second only to FSU in total ACC wins
- Beat one ranked team each of the last 12 seasons

I hope this does not seem like too much of a rant, but I feel like GT gets very little respect. All Clemson and S. Carolina fans are screaming about getting to a conference championship game and we have already done that. I would argue that GT is a better team than Clemson and S. Carolina over the past 5, 10, 15 and 20 years. We won the conference in 1990 and 1998, national champions in 1990 (or co-champions if you like) and won the Coastal division last year.

Again, sorry if this seems like the ramblings of a crazy man, but I am really interested in your thoughts. Thanks again for what you do.

Will

Will,

You are not crazy. A lot of people think Tech is a top 20 program right now. I am not sure that is the case but that is only my opinion and it means about the same as your opinion. I see a pretty good defense at Tech but mainly because of the defensive coordinator. I think you will miss Kenny Scott and KaMichael Hall. Obviously Calvin Johnson’s departure changes the offense. I think Tashard Choice is good but not as good as some GT fans think. I still want to see Taylor Bennett when he does not have Johnson. I could be wrong but I am looking at 8-4 or 7-5. Chan Gailey has not had a season where he lost less than five games at Tech yet.

Mickey,

I have seen you several times say that Willy Korn is the best quarterback recruit you have ever seen enroll at Clemson. Better than Woody? Better than Steve Fuller? If so, why? I saw both Fuller and Woody play and it's hard to believe that anyone could be better than them. Especially Woody when he had games with over 500 yards total offense [N.C. State], and that great game he played against Georgia Tech when he had the winning touchdown run in overtime. If Willy is better than that, then we Clemson fans have a lot of fun coming soon!

Harold

Harold,

I think Fuller is the best offensive player to ever play at Clemson and Woody was the most athletic offensive player to play here. At this stage Korn is more advanced than those guys. I think the future could not be any brighter.

Mickey,

First of all I want to say I am really enjoying your show in the mornings. You guys are doing a great job.

For well over 20 years my Grandfather has parked along the Avenue of Champions parallel to Little John. This year his parking was moved to Lot W. We really don't know where that is, but I have a feeling that he won't be as fortunate to be as close to the stadium as he was with his former parking place. Both my Grandparents attend all of the home football games (my grandfather is 80 and my grandmother is 77) and because of this move I feel they may have a little trouble getting to the stadium. Is there some sort of transportation to the stadium from some of the outer lots? I've noticed tons of University Golf Carts going up the Avenue of Champions over the years, but I wasn't sure if that was open to the public. And if not, why? It seems to me that a fraternity or some university service would do that. You probably could charge a couple of dollars, and I think people will pay it. Do you know of anything about this situation?

Thanks,

KPT

KPT,

Do you have to make your fake emailers praise your blog/dead air radio show EVERY time?
