Morning Mick.
I read your article on Clemson's Running Backs (06/25); good job on the breakdown, man. However you left off fullback Alex Pearson! Please tell me that was by accident!
My case: Alex is one of those rare, big-bruisers of running backs that, when given the ball, can steamroll over opponents but he's not given the chance, which is tragic! He's what, 6'2 and 245 pounds, has great hands and decent running skills. He could be the next Kevin Mack, Chris Lancaster, or Chad Jasmin, and those backs do very well at Clemson!
Nothing against Davis/Spiller, they're two of the very best in all of college football. But neither can run through the line and drag defenders for 3-5 extra yards like I'm thinking Pearson can...again, if given the chance. He's a total bull. Why won't the coaches use him this way? All he is now is a blocking back and in rare cases a receiver. I think he has untapped potential in the running game, and I'd like to see him get the ball at least sparingly. If he can perform like I think he can, it opens up another option when the offense is in 3rd-and-five situations.
He could add a whole other dimension to the offense, the running game, and have an impact on the playbook. If given the chance. Thoughts, Mick?

MAH,
Please don’t take this the wrong way. I like Alex Pearson. However, this response might not sound like it. He is a good, solid contributor. I did not include him with the running backs because I consider him more of a Tight End/H-Back. In fact he spends more time with Coach Napier. I like Alex but you can’t compare him to Mack, Lancaster or Jasmin. Pearson has never had a rush in his career. He has had four receptions for 27 yards and two touchdowns but he is not Mack, Lancaster or Jasmin. Pearson has a role in the offense and he does it well but that role calls for his play as an H-Back.

I love our backs but is our line going to be good enough to open holes for them. We started well last year and then the running game disappeared (including the bowl game).
Will the OL be good enough?
What has to change so that we maintain our running game all year long?
CU Fan
CU Fan,
There are new faces on the offensive line so there should always been concern. With that said, this group is talented despite not being experienced.
Last year I was talking to Brad Scott and he said the offensive linemen were watching film before the Georgia Tech game. The film that day was on the previous year’s Tech contest and a couple of linemen made telling comments. One said, “Coach we had some nice against them last year and Reggie (Merriweather) had some nice runs but James and C.J. should have more success with the same holes this year.” Clemson missed James Davis in the Tech game of 2005 but the linemen were right in 2006 because Davis rushed for 216 yards and Spiller had 116 yards rushing and 50 more receiving.
In your final question, it is difficult to run the ball consistently all year. If you go back and look at game-by-game stats you will see that most teams don’t run it as well in November because the competition gets better. Last year I think the Tigers needed to stay committed to the run even after Virginia Tech shut down the run. I don’t think they ran it enough late in the season.
Mickey,
Hopefully I'm not too early for next week's mailbag.
I'm questioning the rationale of Clemson's scheduling when we have series scheduled against the likes of Auburn and Pitt only to have them cancelled for fluff teams like Louisiana-Monroe and Temple.
Why aren't we scheduling more opponents like Georgia and Texas A&M, teams that are traditionally strong and will provide a good game at least from their perspective. I think most Clemson fans would have the Tigers play good teams from BCS conferences instead of investing time and money to see a host of stat-padding games against lambs-to-slaughter who's sole purpose is to stroke the egos of the coaching staff and players in the name of cleaning out the teething problems of the team.
What are your thoughts on this?

Apoorva,
It is ironic that you sent your e-mail in just a few days before the news about Auburn coming on in 2010 and 2011.
Scheduling is difficult. Sometimes you cancel a series but you have to be accommodating when the other school initiates the canceling also. The schedules are done too far in advance in my opinion. Too much can happen and this increases the chance they can be cancelled.
I wish schools would schedule games four years in advance. This would make it easier to keep the date and series.
Also remember with schedules that you have a lot of factors and concerns. Administrators have to think about money first and home and home series sometimes lost revenue opportunities.

I was surprised that Harbin and Marquez were drafter higher than Andy. Even Hogan (I think?) Why was that? Why was Andy drafter lower this year than last? Who has the best chance of making Major Leagues in your opinion?
Thanks for your columns and radio show etc.
David class of 68
David,
D’Alessio is a power guy that goes on hot streaks but scouts were concerned about the holes in his swing. He is a run producer but has some issues. He was drafted lower this year because he was a senior and had no leverage. This happens a lot. I hate to say this but I do not see Harbin, Smith, Hogan or D’Alessio as great MLB prospects. I think Harbin may get a chance down the road but I am not sure he is a long time big leaguer. Hope I am wrong on all four guys’ accounts.
Mickey,
I know this has been discussed ad nauseum, but the mediocrity and inconsistent play of TB's teams leads me to believe that 2007 will be another 7 win campaign. I also believe that 2008 could be special. However, two consecutive losses to USC will cause a Tiger Nation implosion and Terry Don (if he's still at Clemson) will be besieged with calls for TB's dismissal. Spurrier is, by far, the better coach and his boast to his recruits of never losing to the Tigers again could become factual. The stars and moon aren't aligned right if SC catches up. Spurrier is "da man". I fear TB isn't. Right or wrong?
Rick
Rick,
Spurrier is one of the top coaches in the country and no one can claim otherwise. However, I would steer away from the doom and gloom at this point. Football seasons can be long and momentum can change many times. For example after the Georgia Tech game last year I bet you had a different attitude. Let Clemson lose a couple before you fire Bowden just yet.
