Mickey,

I've been reading your blogs for a while now, and I must say- your last few entries have been quite disappointing. You're writing as if we have just dropped 2 straight to Monroe and Furman. Granted, we haven’t played our best against these two teams, but we all know how Clemson teams traditionally have played up to the talent level of their opponents. If a 38-10 victory against Furman with Harper going 16-19 with 3 TDs on a Saturday afternoon when half the crowd isn’t into the game isn’t enough for you, then maybe you (like many Tiger fans) are expecting way too much out of this young Tiger football team.

I agree with you that we should never let a team like Furman put up the numbers that they did on Saturday, but a win is a win is a win, and I’ll take it any day. After the way our defense played against FSU on the first game of the season, and the beautiful passes that Harper has been making since then, I think we have the potential to have a great season.

Let’s stop all this speculation and negative thinking and remember that we have a team that is 3-0, going for win #4 this weekend…
Go Tigers!
Patrick

Patrick,
Your e-mail has some validity to it. Believe it or not, I am extremely happy to be 3-0. I understand why the game plans have looked the way they have and I am the one that called the last two games glorified scrimmages.

But I have raved about Harper the last two weeks. I called the defensive game plan and effort against FSU brilliant.

Some of my e-mails have accused me of being an apologist the last two weeks. Some say I am too easy on the staff and team.

So let me clarify here. I am very happy to go 3-0. But I hope we play better the next three weeks than we did the last two. I have full confidence that this team can continue to go forward. However, I think it is OK to expect more than we have seen. Lastly, if you recall, I did say that will not judge the last two weeks until I see the next three games. I want to win as much as anyone else but if situations occur I think it is OK to bring up a negative.

Hello Mickey:

I usually ask you about Clemson football because I am in Georgia near the Alabama state line, so I don't read about the Tigers in the news. However, I am curious about the men's soccer team. What's up? They are 3-3. I thought they were expected to be a contender this year.

Also, how are our former football players doing in the NFL? I saw that Justin is out for the season with an injury and Tye is also out indefinitely with an injury. How are the other guys doing? THANKS!

Kirk

Kirk,

Coach Adair says this is a young team and he is encouraged about some things. However he is not satisfied with the results so far. I think they are having a hard time finishing. By that I mean they miss Dane Richards. This team has had opportunities but they have not been able to take advantage of the scoring chances. They have not had the goal-scoring finisher step up. Also understand that I have no idea what is going on in soccer but that is what I have heard so far.

Also I have to defer on the NFL stuff. I just have not had time to watch any of our guys yet. I hope to watch Gaines Adams more. I did see where Brian Dawkins had an incredible game Monday night.

Mickey,

Am i really hearing what a "tough test" this will be at NC State. Am I really hearing that UCF is a "quality loss" against a great football team. Yes UCF played Texas close but what you or anyone else fails to mention is that Arkansas State also played Texas close in Austin. I thought Lou Holtz would be the only one who could declare NC State a quality opponent. Has anyone mentioned that Wofford forced NC State to punt 8 times last Saturday? Amazing.

Tiger

Tiger,

I am hearing what you are preachin’ and I believe most of what you say as well. It’s not like we are playing the Steelers this weekend. But NC State is talented on offense with their skill players. Also this is a conference road game. I think this is a great example of let’s just worry about us. If Clemson plays the way it can this will be significant win. However, you and I both know there is no way to tell how this team will execute.

Mickey,

I read the blog every day and enjoy learning your perspective on the direction of Clemson athletics. I have two questions.

First, if we and other teams have such a difficult time preparing for Furman, Monroe, and Wake who all employ run oriented, misdirection offenses, then why don't we see more high profile offenses run the same thing? If whatever they are doing works so well against us with their personnel, then one would think it would work even better if they had Davis and Spiller in the backfield. Wouldn't other teams also have trouble defending that style of offense if they did not see it very often?

Second, what are the chances that we land a top 10 recruiting class? We already have some great players committed, and there are a ton of really good players out there to fill the last few spots which we seem to have a good chance to sign. Freeman, Page, Thompson, Mattes, Harper, Harris, Massie, and Whitlock all come to mind. Thoughts?

Again, thank you for all you do for Clemson sports fans.

Tiger fan

Tiger fan,

Thanks for the kind words. I don’t know why more coaches at higher profile schools don’t run more mis-direction packages. I think one of the reasons is that is difficult to recruit to. The NFL does not do it and many major programs love to tell recruits how they can get to the NFL through their program. Also coaches don’t want to be branded with a “gimmick” offense because it could hurt their future hires.

I think Clemson can reach the top 15 for sure and maybe top 12 if they win and they can close the deal on some of these prospects. I think they are in the top two with seven of the eight prospects you mentioned with Whitlock being the exception.

Hey Mickey,

I really enjoy the blog...great source of Clemson info for those of us unfortunate enough not to live in Clemson anymore. I was curious to see that Clemson has a lack of interest in Everett Dawkins, DE from Byrnes. I know we have gotten some really great DE prospects the past 3 classes, which should make us a little more selective, but with schools like Fla State, Tenn, Va Tech, Wake, Maryland, NC State, Mich State, and Wisconsin offering, can we really afford to ignore a local kid like this. Any inside info? Thanks and keep up the good work.

Mark

Mark,

Clemson has scouted Dawkins and will continue to do so. I think they like him but feel he is behind Bowers, Crittenton, Harmon, Thompson and a few other Des and DTs they are recruiting. At this time I don’t think they do not have room for him but will continue to evaluate.
