Hello Mickey:
I had to laugh when I read your blog about the "quarterback controversy" at Clemson. Heck, I am glad Willy got some playing time. It is in the best interest of our team for the 2nd string QB to get as much playing time as possible in case we really need him (wish they had done that more when Proctor was the #2 QB). However, it is silly for people to suggest that we replace a guy that throws for five TDs and goes 20 of 26(?) with a freshman that has only been in our system for eight months.
You are correct. Willy may well work his way into the starting QB position, but it doesn't appear it will happen anytime soon.
Best,
Kirk
Kirk,
Thanks for the comments. The controversy is not there now. Bowden has made it clear who the number-one guy is. I think this is a great situation as long as everyone handles it well.
Hey Mickey....."best players on the field" is a very good thing ! Thanks Coaches !
Regarding Korn and Harper - I've said it before but it bears repeating......
Korn is going to play some to gain some valuable "live action" experience. Should something happen to Harper - and let's hope NOT - then we've got a guy that has been under center and taken a few hits. Thanks Coaches !
THERE IS NO CONTROVERSY !
Keep up the good work Mickey and thanks.
Dennis
Dennis,
I agree. Thanks for contributing. I think we agree this is a positive situation as long as the attitudes are good.
Mickey,
GOOD GOD you guys are getting all of this started up with the Clemson Quarter
backs, Harper is the starter until Willie is ready and from what I saw of him
last year in high school he will not be ready until next year and you guys are
adding fuel to the fire. I mean damn Harper has done nothing wrong at all so leave it alone talk about Mickey’s favorite sport male swimming.
Thompson
Thompson,
Where have we said anything different than your point? I do think Korn is better than you think at this time. Also the swimming comment went over my head. I guess I missed that one.
Mickey,
For a school that once prided itself as "Linebacker U", we seem to have done a poor job in recent years recruiting linebackers, missing out on such players as Lawrence Timmons, Dekota Watson, Gino Hayes, Bruce Taylor and others. As our defense seems designed to highlight linebacker play, why do you think we're missing out (Antonio Clay not withstanding)? This appears to be the weakest part of our defense next year. Who do you think we'll sign in the upcoming class? How good is Jonathan Willard?
Thanks,
John
John,
Clemson has missed on high profile guys and Timmons and Hayes have been great ones. I am not sold on Dekota Watson yet and who knows on Taylor. Also those guys went to traditional powers. I think Clemson has hit on some players as the staff loves Scotty Cooper and Brandon Maye. Willard is a good player and I think they will probably sign one or two more linebackers for this class with the best bets being Rollins at this point. They are also in on a few big time wars on players like Jerrell Harris.
Mickey,
Just a follow up. Duke is now 0-2 and it looks like they might go winless the rest of the season. It’s the same old story. Coach Roof only uses the kids he likes and not the best players. Just look at Joe Surgan, missed three field goals on Saturday and he is still kicking. Some good reporter should find out what the bond is between these two. Duke needs a new coach who will not pull the wool over the AD's eyes. Someone should talk to the players. Its time for Roof to go!!!!
Thanks,
Justin
Justin,
I can’t argue with the results. I think we can agree that the Duke job is perhaps the most difficult in the South but if Wake can do it then so can Duke. In the end wins are the only thing that matters and Duke can’t win. I am not sure if he needs to go but I know he needs to win and soon.
Hey Mick,
Forget the rankings or stars....
IN your opinion, rank the top 3 out of these RBs and which one
Do you see at Clemson the most.
Jamie Harper
Carlton Thomas
Averin Collier
Covaughn Deboskie
Dontavius Jackson
Chris Jordan
Eric Smith
Onterio McCalebb
Ryan Williams
All of them great backs...I really like Mcalebb
Thanks #21
#21,
I think Harper is the back the staff has targeted as their top choice. Jackson would be very high on that list also but Harper gives them speed and power. Smith is a big back that the lack but Harper may be the best combination of the three. Those would be the top three and I think Jackson will go to Georgia, Smith to Auburn and Harper to Clemson. I also know that South Carolina thinks Harper is the best of that bunch.
You know Mickey, I don’t really think your observation that neither Hutchinson or Capote were recruited by FSU and that they were less talented than those players they replaced was necessary or relevant. Everyone can assess talent but not everyone has a widely read sports blog. Before someone who has a widely read sports blog makes such a negative assessment about players who have just contributed to a significant Clemson victory, he should ask himself; is what I am about to write beneficial in promoting Clemson football or is it written just to display my acumen at assessing offensive linemen?. Lots of talented tackles and guards were not recruited by FSU, just as many were not recruited by Clemson. What I mean to say on a fundamental level is that in my opinion your comment sucked, in every way shape and form.
Michael
Michael,
It is fairly obvious to me or anyone who pays attention that a guy is a second or third team guy for a reason and if your top two players at one position get hurt then you should expect a drop off. I never said either were bad players but I said a third option is not as good as the first two. I am not going to only write what is beneficial to a program and who is to say what is beneficial or not. I agree about FSU not being the measuring stick for offensive linemen but your other arguments are not as strong. Here is a secret: Tribble Reese is not as good as Harper or Korn, Sadat Chambers is not as good as James Davis or C.J. Spiller.
