Each Friday I publish your comments and answer your questions. To submit a comment or questions please e-mail me at mickeyplyler@hotmail.com.

Mickey,

A couple of questions:
1. Did UNC pull Gaines Adams' scholly near or on signing day?
2. Why did they pull the offer, he qualified?
3. According to Adams, he was ONLY offered schollys from Clemson and
UNC, is that true?
4. One of your beef's with the aarc was that this never happens, how's
this different from Jojo Cox?

Mickey, I know your site and scout says that he got other scholly
offers. But read these links, it's not what Gaines says.

Jim

Jim,

Adams committed to Clemson weeks before signing day and never considered UNC late. Therefore, I would be surprised if UNC had any contact with him and it would have been foolish to pull scholarship offers from kids you are not going to get. It is bad PR. Plus if they did then they screwed up. No wonder Bunting is gone. From my recollection those were the only two schools that recruited him.

I am not sure I understand number four. Gaines Adams qualified. If UNC pulled their scholarship offer then they missed out on a chance to sign a number four overall pick in the NFL draft.

Very seldom does a kid sign with a different school after a year of prep school. It happens but it is rare. I never said never. Plus several kids that the AARC originally turned down went on to qualify this year.

This situation is totally different than Jo Jo Cox. The circumstances are not even close to being the same. I am not sure what point you are trying to make.

Mickey,

How will or could losing Markish Jones and Stanley Hunter hurt Clemson this year (2007) and next year (2008)?

Thanks
Stuart

Stuart,

This has a bigger chance of being a factor in 2008. I did not think either would have a significant role this year. If Hunter gets here in the spring then he will not have missed too much. I doubt Jones ever plays a down at Clemson so the staff will try recruit another wide receiver to take his slot. How much this hurts will depend on who they sign in his place.

Mr. Plyler,

I know that this time of year is all about football, but Trevor's boys season is about to start up. I know that Clemson open against South Carolina on the 31st of August. I was wondering if you knew much about the team this year. I have not heard much about the team this year. I know that we have to replace Dane Richards and Frederico Moojen, who each scored 11 goals, as well as our goalie, Phil Marfuggi. Trevor's teams always make the NCAA, but is this year a rebuilding year? The ACC is always though in soccer. Also, who does he have coming in this year that might make an instant impact?

Thanks,

Brad

Brad,

I have not talked to Trevor in about a month but the last time I talked to him he was extremely excited about the upcoming season. Marfuggi will be missed but some think the other keeper was better at times last season. I do not think this is a rebuilding year. I will ask Trevor about his squad soon and put it on the blog. One thing I do know is the ACC is expected to be loaded again.

Mickey,

IF Coach Bowden is not at Clemson after this season, who could be? Because in my mind right now we are MUCH better off with coach Bowden and the staff we have in place than what we could possibly hire. I say this only because of a few simple things that Clemson does NOT have (nor will it anytime soon) that would attract a top quality coach and staff. Agree or disagree: Our facilities for the FOOTBALL program is C+ in its current state?? No way any big time coach would come here with the state of our football facilities and the LACK of progress to get them anywhere near at least a B+!! Agree or disagree: Our BOT and President are as anti-Clemson football as any towel waving USC fan??? Do you think Stave Spurrier would sit before the egghead AARC and debate whether or not a FULLY QUALIFIED player should be admitted??? Not a chance in Hades!!! Agree or disagree: Our administration is more concerned with being labeled a "football factory" than it is in actually letting our coaches, coach and deal with REAL problems not ridiculous perceptions. Agree or disagree: Our administration WILL scare away any viable improvement over coach Bowden. In my opinion we WILL NOT do any better than coach Bowden until changes in the administration are made or at least a LOT of concessions are made.

Steve

Steve,

I have no idea who would be on the list if Bowden is gone. I think the facilities have improved and are continuing to improve at a rapid pace. The Board and President say the right things about being supportive but in my opinion have not done everything they can do to back it up. Top 20 is a much bigger priority than football. I understand academics being a bigger priority but you have to realize that some things they do hamper the success of football. They should not pretend that it does not. Some of their actions do hurt. I think they think they want to win at the highest level but I am not sure they understand how. I do not agree that they are anti-Clemson or USC fans. I agree the administration is overly concerned about perception of the football factory issue. I agree that some candidates would not be interested because of the perception of the board and presidents by the coaching industry. However, I do not think it is quite the doom and gloom that you present. Dori Helms has helped. In my opinion her role being increased is a good thing. She gets it. Also Cecil Huey’s influence is not quite as direct as it once was. Clemson can win and can win under Bowden or his successor but it helps when everyone understands the environment of college football.

One quick note: The AARC originally turned down several signees that did qualify and are now a part of the program. Thank goodness they are now Tigers instead of Tar Heels, Gamecocks or Bulldogs.

Hello Mickey:

I agree with your assessment of what Tommy Bowden should emphasize in the future, but I would go a bit further with regard to how he acts toward his football players. I specifically think Tommy Bowden needs to shoulder the blame should the team lose a game. His players will give more of themselves if he takes a little bit more responsibility following a loss.

Tommy Bowden has to be himself, but he can also learn from others. Danny Ford was excellent at taking pressure off of his players and taking blame for losses, regardless of whether he deserved it or not. So, I suggest Coach Bowden think about shouldering the blame if the team loses a game. After all, he is the Head Coach!

Best,

Kirk

Kirk,

I hear Tommy different I guess but I can see how fans get upset by what he says to the media. Tommy West always took responsibility and they fired him. The key is to win more. In the end what you say in a press conference is not important but I see your point. How do we know that he does not tell his team this in private?

Mickey,

Your Audible blog-WOW !!!

I would never have come up with this one !! You are obviously much closer to the program than the average fan and have much more "hands on" insight.

My first reaction was that the position coaches would have the responsibilities you outline relative to getting close to the players. However, after some pondering, I'm really leaning towards your recommendation that Head Coach Tommy Bowden revamp his schedule to include the time necessary to develop a bond with his players....all 100 of them.

Also, my recommendation to Head Coach Tommy Bowden is that he "tell it like it is" and be Frank with no Fluff.

Thanks for the Audible !!!

Dennis

Dennis,

I agree that the assistants have a huge role in all of the suggestions as well. He has to be careful with telling it like it is though because that can be dangerous.
