Each Friday we publish your comments and questions in our e-mail bag section. To submit a question or comments please e-mail me at Mickeyplyler@hotmail.com.

Mickey,
You are dead wrong on coach Ted Roof at Duke. He is a terrible coach who plays his favorite players and does not listen to his other coaches. He should be a salesman the way he has fooled the AD at Duke.

He will loose at least 11 games with a bunch of starters coming back. Roof could not coach at the high school level. He is nothing but excuses. We need help at Duke.

Justin

Justin,
Thanks for the e-mail. Like many things in life sometimes we don’t have all of the facts before we form our opinions. I am impressed by his game day coaching and his attitude. I love his enthusiasm. I cannot speak for the day-to-day operations like you and do not have any inside to his past. I do agree that you need help at Duke. Keep me up to date with the program. Thanks again and good luck.

Mickey,
I have heard the athletic department @ Clemson and other schools for that matter, make statements that an athlete wants to leave and they have granted the athlete "a release" from his scholarship. What would the consequence be to the athlete, if any, if the University did not grant a release? Is this simply a formality? My understanding is that scholarships are only good for one year and usually renewed or rolled over each year.

Thanks,

Phil

Phil,
Athletes have to sit out another year and pay their own way for a year if they are not granted a release from their scholarship. This is a huge issue with Brandon Warren at FSU right now. It is sometimes a delicate subject.

Mickey,

I enjoy the blog, but have two questions. Who are our top five to ten recruiting targets this year, and will the 2008 class once again be an upgrade in talent? I know we had more players drafted this year than any other year since 1999, but I am expecting us to have even better showings the next couple of years with all of the young talent on our roster that could potentially come out. James Davis, CJ Spiller, Jacoby Ford, and several of the defensive linemen and defensive backs could all go in the first two rounds.
Tiger Fan

Tiger Fan,
Among the top targets this season are D’Quan Bowers, Andre Ellington, Brandon Barnes, Marquan Jones, Tavarius King, Jaron Brown, A.J. Harmon, Tyler Love, Kenneth Page, Zerbie Sanders, Dalton Freeman, Robert Quinn, Donte Rumph, Sam Hammonds, Brandon Thompson, Terrell Mannning, Jonathan Willard, Xavier Brewer, Charles Whitlock, Spencer Adams and Kenny Davis. Those are about 20 off of the top of my head and are in no order.

I agree that the draftable players at Clemson should continue to increase.

Mick,

What’s up with Steven Jackson? They red shirt him, he is hs all-america and he cannot beat out others for either punting or place kicking?

Can he still kick them out of the end zone on kickoff?

I live up in NJ so I did not see spring game but are others that good?

Maybe this is why other recruit (best in SC) agreed to sign with Clemson anyway - even though CU fan his entire life?

Please advise.
Thanks
Cufan

CUfan,
Steven hurt his back last season and red-shirted as a result. He is just a red-shirt freshman. Give him more time before you judge him. He will continue to work on consistency and I think his hard work will play off one day.

Mickey,

I heard an interview with someone from CU Tigers.com who mentioned that Billy Napier and some of the other coaches were going out further from Clemson than maybe they had done in the past to go after some of the top national prospects. There was an indication that maybe this was a bit of a change in philosophy now that Billy is the coordinator.

Do you think that we are focusing on more of the top 150 prospects on a national basis than in the past, and do you know how many of the top 150 would currently list Clemson as a top 5 or 10 choice?

As we have discussed before, it sure seems that we need to reach another level with recruiting (not that we have been bad, but a top 10 or 15 class) to legitimately have a chance to play for a conference championship on a regular basis.

Gregg

Gregg,
Napier is a recruiting machine. He works as hard as any coach I have ever been around. There is an old saying in recruiting that states, “You can’t sign em if you don’t recruit em.” I would say Clemson is in with more top 150-type players this year.

Mickey,
Do you think the NCAA will address oversigning anytime soon? Is this practice undermining the 85 scholly rule? If not, will Clemson begin this practice?

The ol' ball coach's lower tier players must be on pins and needles this summer waiting to see if their scholly will get yanked ... or perhaps, they will suddenly come to the realization (with the help of the coaching staff) that football is no longer for them (wink, wink).

Its disgraceful that he signs too many kids, filters out the ones he wants to keep, and then forces the others to the likes of SC State (an act in my opinion designed to keep players away from his competition).

How many do you think the coots will sign in '08? They'll need a pretty large number for that Top10 class they cherish so much.
clemchem

Clemchem,
You can only get away with what your administration will allow you to do. I can tell you that in recent years Clemson administration has not allowed oversigning. Some think it is a big deal and others do not.
