Friday E-Mail Bag

Each Friday I publish your comments and answer your questions. To submit a comment or questions please e-mail me at mickeyplyler@hotmail.com.

Mickey,
I was fortunate enough to have earned a Master's degree at LSU and a doctorate at Clemson and in doing so, spent a significant portion of my life in the academic "world". It has been my experience that a large proportion of university faculty understand how successful athletic programs are in fact, beneficial to their own positions and provide a means for their own professional advancement.

Those faculty members/administrators who dislike athletics are usually those that are/have been unsuccessful in their careers and athletic programs provide an easy excuse for their own failings.

Mickey, it's all about money. Faculty who work to discredit or hinder the establishment and maintenance of successful athletic programs are envious of the money donated to these programs by alumni/university supporters. These same faculty members are more often than not, delusional in that they actually think that if athletic programs did not exist, these same alumni/university supporters would donate that same money to their academic pursuits.

On numerous occasions you have mentioned during WCCP broadcast and written in your Tigernet blogs that several members of the Clemson University administration have negative opinions of athletic programs at the university level. I would ask that you request that these individuals make an "appearance" on your morning radio program in order to support their position. After all, these individuals are State employees and should be made accessible to the public who in fact, pay their salaries.

Thanks,
Donald, Ph.D.

Donald,
Thanks for the e-mail. I have always known that the friction existed on many campuses. However, I am very good friends with several members of the Clemson faculty who are huge sports fans. I am not sure what percentage are anti-athletics but it does exist. I would love to have them on my radio show. Since some have tried to discredit the movement among powerful Clemson fans, I would love to answer any questions they have and have them answer our questions. A vice-president attacked my integrity and crediblity but you and I both know they will not respond now that it has been proven they were worng at that time. It did not take a Ph. D. to understand that they would not come on my show in a million years.

Mr. Plyler,
Thank you for bringing Clemson fans insight each and every day! Great Job! I was wondering if Tommy Bowden and staff have ever spoken with/reviewed/or visited Pete Carroll’s 2-back philosophy. Though Lendale White and Reggie Bush were two different types of runners, Carroll found away to use their talent to spread defenses thin. I think it would be great time investment for our coaching staff! Tell me what you think of this offensive set up! Assuming Rendrick Taylor could block like a TE. I think this would create so many miss matches that it would drive defensive coordinators crazy!!!!
Chris

Chris,
Thanks for the kind words. The staff visits with other college and pro teams in attempts to better their schemes on both sides of the ball. I would look for some creative things on offense this year. Spiller’s versatility gives them many options. I do not think that Taylor will ever play tight end though.

Mickey,
I was hoping you could help me out by posting this on your blog in the Friday E-Mail Bag.

The Atlanta Clemson Club has received approval from the Georgia DMV to begin collecting applications for Clemson license plates in the state of Georgia. I, like most other Georgia Tigers I’m sure, am tired of seeing UGA and GT plates all over the place. The state has finally granted us permission to strike back. Before production can be started, 1000 applications must be received. That’s where I need your help. As of March 28, only 262 applications have been received. I know there are more than 262 Tigers in the state of Georgia, and I’m hoping they just aren’t aware that this has been approved and is available. I hope by posting this on your blog, more Georgia Tigers can be reached and we can get this project moving a little quicker.

All of the relevant information can be found on the Atlanta Clemson Club website at

Thanks Mickey and keep up the good work. We really appreciate all you do for the Clemson family.
Brian

Brian,

Thanks for the nice words. I hope this helps spread the world. Let me know what else we could do to help. Thanks.

Hello Mickey:

Thank you for your review of the review. The outcome of this process was better than I expected. As you pointed out, there are really only two things that continue to be an issue: 1) A student athlete can be qualified, but not accepted, and 2) the non-voting athletic representative on the AARC. Nonetheless, it seems that common sense has prevailed for the most part.

Best,

Kirk

Kirk,
It was better than I expected. I would also say the personnel on the AARC would need to change in one case. Now the key is for the people to implement the policies. The people were the key before and remain the key. It was interesting to see how the quotes from the higher ups changed after the review. It was nice to see Ms. Helms step up and admit the changes were needed and will help. Where are the others that criticized things earlier?

Mickey,

Why is it that we see SC and other SEC teams playing baseball on TV but rarely see Clemson and the other ACC teams on? The few times that I catch an ACC game, it's usually either GT, FSU, UM or UNC. SEC teams are strong in baseball, but the ACC is just as strong as was shown in last year's CWS and current rankings. Why don't we have significant baseball contracts with ESPN, Fox, and other major networks (NOT CSS!)?

PawBoy

PawBoy,
I am not sure who selects the games for Sports South or any of the cable networks. College baseball is becoming more popular and I think you will continue to see more games on TV in the future. Hopefully that also means more Clemson games.
