Overall Report Analysis-Grades and Comments:
Offense-Rushing
Interior running game-FSU does not allow much running room because of their great speed at linebacker but the Tigers made most of their plays between the tackles. To get 151 yards rushing against FSU was a great tribute to this offense. I liked the quick hitters and direct running game Saturday. The running game opened up the play action passing game all night.
Perimeter running game-The Tigers got 38 yards from Jacoby Ford on the perimeter but the game plan was more interior running game against FSU’s speed.
Option game-N/A.
Draws-The Tigers ran the draw well the few times I saw it Saturday.
Short yardage running game-Clemson converted most short yardage attempts including the final touchdown.
Yards after contact-FSU tackles very well but James Davis had several nice runs after contact.
Offense-Passing
Pass protection-Clemson gave up zero sacks against FSU. That is a great stat against a program that has prided itself with pressuring the quarterback.
Underneath passing game-Fantastic. Proctor was able to check down and hit the underneath man with accuracy.
Intermediate passing game-Once again this was a key to the contest. Proctor hit Taylor, Grisham and Kelly on intermediate routes that kept drives going. Proctor was once again outstanding.
Vertical passing game-Outstanding. Proctor hit vertical passes to Taylor, Stuckey and Davis for big plays. The vertical passing game has become perhaps Proctor’s best asset.
Screens-FSU did a nice job of sniffing out the wide receiver screens.
Drops-I counted only two drops the entire night.
Yards after catch-As good as to be expected versus a fast defense.
QB throws on time-Proctor not only threw it on time but again this week he waited until receivers broke open when he had to.
Offense-Overall
First down yardage-It was feat or famine on first down all night. They hit big plays on first down often but also left themselves in bad second down yardage often.
Third down conversion-6 of 14 was very good against this type of defense.
Big Plays-Clemson hit on 7 plays of 18 yards or more. This was a big key to the game.
Trick plays-Nice reverse call to Jacoby Ford and I guess the hurry up snap on the final drive could go into this category.
Defense-Overall
Tackling-Good except in the fourth quarter when FSU began to wear down the Tigers. Clemson limited FSU’s big plays because of good open field tackling.
First down yardage-The Tigers did a great job of getting FSU behind the chains for most of the night.
Third down conversion-Clemson held FSU to 7 of 17. The defense got off of the filed including the big stop by Scott on Surratt late.
Limit of Big Plays-Clemson’s secondary did a nice job. FSU had one play over 15 yards the entire night.
Defense-Running game
Interior running game-The Tigers played well against the run in the first half but got worn down in the second half. FSU cannot run the football but Clemson did a nice job of limiting them here again.
Perimeter running game-The perimeter running game was not existent for the Noles’. Clemson pursued the ball well and shut down Booker.
Option game-N/A
Draws-The Tigers limited FSU’s draw game almost the entire night.
Short yardage running game-The Noles converted most short yardages with the fullback but Scott’s key stop late was another key to the Clemson win.
Yards after contact-The Tigers were OK here. The fourth quarter saw some yards after contact for FSU.
Defense-Passing Game
Pressure-Outstanding. This was the best pass rush of the young season. Adams, Merling, and Jackson put pressure on Weatherford all night.
Underneath passing game coverage-Good. FSU tried to put the passing game on the perimeter with a few throws in the flats but Coleman and crew tackled well.
Intermediate passing game coverage-Good. Clemson held FSU to 102 yards through the air.
Vertical passing game coverage-Clemson gave up zero big plays in the passing game. FSU did not have time to throw it deep and the secondary did a nice job here.
Screens-Clemson limited FSU’s screen game.
Passes broken up-This was not a huge success but Weatherford was not accurate enough to get some of the balls broken up.
Open field tackling-Excellent.
Special Teams
Kickoff returns-Blocking, returners-The only kick off return Clemson had went for 25 yards.
Kick off coverage-Great. The Tigers held FSU to 14 yards per kick off return. This was a great improvement.
Punt return/block-Blocking, returners-OK. The punts were fielded but only returned for small gains.
Punt coverage-Snap, protection, punt, coverage-Excellent. The snaps were good. The protection was excellent. The punts averaged 39 yards and the coverage allowed only nine yards on four returns.
Field Goals/extra points-snap, hold, protection, kick-If not for this break down the game would not have been close. Two awful efforts that cost the Tigers a bunch of points.
Overall Team
Energy, Enthusiasm, Leadership-Outstanding. I commend Coach Bowden and his staff and the players for not having a hangover from the BC game. They were excited and ready to play.
Coaching
Emotionally prepared-Excellent. This might be the biggest news of the night. Bowden had his team focused and ready to play.
Game plan-Great. Spence was aggressive once again. The miss-direction was nice and the passing game was very aggressive. Defense did a nice job of helping young players. Better defensive pressure package this week.
Adjustments-Great job of adjusting to FSU getting set slow on defense. Also nice two-point adjustment.
Personnel-Davis was the man on offense and the substitution pattern was better.
Time outs-Good challenge by Bowden on the punt fumble but he should not have had to challenge it if the officials made the right call to begin with.
