Mickey,

Thank you for the commentary on the baseball team's swagger this year. I agree that it is early in the season and we don't want the Tigers to peak early, then fade. However, I also agree that confidence (swagger) is necessary in any sport because you can't succeed if you don't believe you will. Henry Ford said, "The man that says he can and the man that says he cannot are both right." I hope Ryan is continuing to make improvements and future plans for college.

Best,

Kirk

Kirk,
Thanks for the comments about Ryan. The college baseball season is long and there is always a concern about peaking too soon but this year’s baseball team still has so much to work on. They are still trying to figure out their bullpen situation. I am still not sure if there is a true closer there right now. I am not sure who Jack trusts in the bullpen. This team still has defensive concerns. They have made too many errors in the first part of this season. I am not sure about who will eventually be the catcher. Maybe Nester’s bat will come alive. Maybe Pohl will beat him out. Maybe both catchers will split time. The point is that this team cannot get complacent because they still have so much to work on. I do like the core of this team though. This team has enough offense to be dangerous and I still think they may have enough pitching. One thing to watch though is the schedule because it will intensify soon.

Mickey,

I'm guessing you'll put out a blog about the women’s bball coaching search at some point this week and I'd like to hear what you have to say, and maybe you can change my mind, but I think we need to get rid of it. Our Athletic Department killed this program about 10 years ago and we've been watching the slow death ever since. It’s time we cut the fat and get rid of it. They aren't any good and they can't draw any fans, I'm not sure even if they become good they will draw that many fans people just don't care about women’s basketball. I say drop it and lets bring in softball. There are tons of good reasons why here's a few:
1. We are in the South which is a softball hotbed, there is a lot of talent to draw from just like baseball. This would allow for building the program quickly and maintaining it for the long term.
2. If you piggy back games together with baseball you could draw good crowds. Clemson supports baseball in a huge way and I think if you tied the two together with back to back games and things like that they would support softball much the same way.
3. The university would still be maintaining a women’s program, developing young people, and all those other clichés things they say about minor sports.
4. This is just a perception thing, but which sounds better, 1,000 people at a women's bball game or 1,000 people at a softball game? I think the perception would be that softball is huge and well supported whereas bball is not and that would make a big difference .
What do you think?

Richard

Richard,
Thanks for the e-mail but I disagree about dropping women’s basketball. I am not a big fan of the sport but I do understand the significance of the sport. Adding softball would mean you would have to build a facility. I am not sure where you would put the facility and therefore I don’t think you could draw from piggy backing games. Another issue is time. Baseball lasts about three hours and I am not sure people will sit through two hours of softball then three hours of baseball. I am not totally against adding softball but I don’t think it should be done by dropping women’s basketball. I do like the idea of thinking outside of the box though. Thanks for the insightful e-mail.

Mickey,
Do you know how James Davis my favorite Clemson player (Along with the Judge) is doing with his rehab with the Browns? Any information would be appreciated since I have not heard anything in months on his physical condition.

Harold

Harold,
The last I heard is that James’ shoulder is rehabbing well. I heard he will be ready to go full speed when their camp opens. However, James has had shoulder problems in the past and shoulders are a big concern for running backs.

Thanks Mickey for any help you can provide about helping the cause in naming the training room after Herman McGee.

By experience I can say he truly showed no favorites, whether you were the team star or the last walk-on on the depth chart, you were one of Herman's boys. He treated everyone the same. He and Col. Rick Robbins taught me some of the most valuable lessons I learned at Clemson. Love for country, and you cannot judge a man by the color of his skin. When those two men died, I cried over both of them. Somehow Clemson Orange lost some of it's luster when they passed. I never knew a football player in my 4 years of being an equipment manager that didn't love Herman, whether they were from the deep south (Alabama) all the way to New Jersey.

John G

John G,
I did not know Herman McGee or Col. Robbins but have heard from so many people how wonderful both gentlemen were. I understand it is people like these gentlemen that made Clemson so great. I would encourage anyone that felt compelled to write the athletic department in an attempt to name the training room after Mr. McGee. I think there are enough powerful people who could get involved to get this done. I will write a blog soon about the subject in hopes to bring a little more attention to your cause.
