Things change, especially nowadays. Not surprising, especially with him. He is committing pretty late anyway.

I just expected us to be more successful since we are in "good shape" NIL wise.

It is illegal to offer a player NIL money to play at a school. Clemson is one of the few schools that is not cheating.

Well they need to get to cheating. The gap between Clemson and the elites is getting wider and wider. Clemson is barely out recruiting the coots right now for High School players and I won’t even bring up the portal.

Well, ya didn’t sign them. They committed, but that can always change. Hopefully they stick, but they aren’t signed. As a recruiting fan for decades, that’s always bugged me when people say a kid is signed when he’s only committed. Sorry to offend

Clemson needs to consistently make it back to the playoffs to help high school recruiting. Since high school players are also illegally being paid, Dabo is going to have to be creative.

What are you talking about? The problem is not players being illegally paid. Tampering is illegal and current disaster but players can be paid

Yes please don't bring up the portal bc we all know how it helped the Gamecocks this year. All you have to do is look at the top transfer portal from 247 last year and what they did to realize all this portal talk from Clemson fans is a laughable farce. The portal helps when a great team gets an elite QB. How did Jaylen Daniel's help LSU? How did Caleb Willia.s help the real USC? How did Hartman help Notre Dame? How did all those portal guys help Miami? Take FSU, with and without Jordan Travis. To be fair I didn't think FSU was a top 4 team with Travis much less without him. Clemson should have beat them but Clemson beat themselves. BC should have beat them but BC best themselves. Someone tell 5 teams that went from average to playoff contender bc of portal? We recruit high school guys to get better bc when you develop they get better year to year. What they are this year means nothing for next year.

I agree it takes more than 1 player but teams like Mizzou (among others) seem to be benefitting and it's moving the needle for their program. It appears quite a few mid tier schools are trying to buy their way to relativity which seems to be working. I'm more afraid of who we lose annually to the portal than who we acquire. NIL has changed the landscape completely. Go Tigers!!!

Dawk was kind of a second choice. Sapp asked he be considered. That worked out ok. I don't pay attention to ratings but to who the coaches wanted

Yeah the CJ guy is being recruited by non- power 5 like Charlotte and Marshall. That does seem to be 2nd choice.

Clemson had 4 freshmen playing on a top 10 defense this past year and you’re disappointed in recruiting? I’d gladly take those guys off your hands especially Woods.

they will have that dog in them they know how to fight for every bit of playing time
the whole HS athlete ranking system produces soft players honestly look at most of these guys . the hair dos , clothes and probably make up also the HS matters so much . just think
football is a fight. top ranked players come from prep schools. have you ever seen a rough school kid get beat up by a prep school kid

Oh my goodness, IMG, Mater Dei and st Thomas Aquinas are prep schools and they have dozens of guys in the NFL. I get your point, but it’s only partly true. A kid from Dallas Carter is gonna beat up a kid from St Marks, but then the Carter kid robs the liquor store and rapes a girl on his way home.

the only one that i know if was in the same recruiting class as TL16 who is in his 3rd NFL season
it's be over half a decade since an IMG recruit came through
Brent Venables was the only reason that pipeline ever existed

More portal strikeouts and fallbacks.

Not good when beating out Charlotte and Tenple for players. How do teams like FSU for the portal so well? And even South Carolina. I can see SC because they can play right away, but FSU and Bama are successful there also. As for non portal offers, it says it all when we are up against Temple and Charlotte for players.

We beat out those types of schools for Jonathan Brooks and he just rushed for over 1,100 yards before he hurt his knee. Players get missed all the time.

This is a weak finish to what started out as a good recruiting year. We are down to a third choice LB who has an offer from the likes of Towson State? I am sure he will give his all and try hard, but we are losing out to Ark? What in the Sam Hill are we doing? And don’t give me the “Dabo won’t use NIL $ to recruit players” crap b/c if everyone else is doing it with impunity, then it is effectively legal so get in the game.
But here’s what I think is the case yet no one says it out loud. Our ability to compete NIL wise is simply not on par with the big time programs and that is the real problem. So we play the holier than thou card and are falling further and further behind as a result. Now investing in real serious coaches that can get players into the NFL is a step in the right direction but is it enough to rectify the NIL $ imbalance? Who knows.

Bad enough to slip to 8 win seasons and the Gator Bowl from the CFP but after reading this thread it feels like we are headed to 6 win seasons and Mayonnaise and Birmingham Bowls.

That's how you build a roster. Lose experienced players to the portal and...
Dec 16, 2023, 2:43 PM
|

..then replace them with last-minute stolen Towson commitments.
It's not like we aren't trying AT ALL to get portal players, but this isn't looking good.

if you cant get top recruits you at least better have top coaches to coach up the mediocre players or you will find yourself at best .500 ball, if you dont have good players the top coaches wont come to your school
