UNC more valuable due to increased TV market

Neither BIG or SEC have a school in the state of NC. Adding UNC would automatically make their network a must carry channel in the highest penetration TV package offered by cable tv providers in this TV market. Follow the $$$

Wrong markets are the old way of thinking. It’s about eyeballs now.

100 percent correct. Even ESPN going to streaming. Cable bundle is dead so markers is not the analysis that matters

Using this logic, wouldn’t the BIG then pick FSU, given that Florida is a larger state than NC?

You serious Clark? It’s 2024 my friend. Metrics and platforms are a little different now. It’s all about your ability to attract eyeballs for football no matter where they are situated geographically. That is why TV execs cut checks.

Your analysis is full of holes.
It's about eyeballs, not geography. Nobody watches UNC football compared to Clemson.
If you understood where television football market value came from you you'd already know this.
(Having a heck of a time comprehending just how stupid people have become...it really is no wonder our country is burning. Critical thinking skills are non-existent.)

I’m sure he’s referencing carriage fees through traditional cable and satellite providers. But B1G and SEC networks are already included in all the major carriers in North Carolina. There might be a bump in the rate per subscriber but this is not the future of sports broadcasting and will play little role in the next generation of contracts.

So too are regional "markets" that people just love to harp on. Hey ACC can add Orlando Tech for the huge Orlando market! LOLOLOL g-t-f-o-o-h.

If this were true the SEC will be trading South Carolina (Columbia 76th largest TV market in US) with Clemson (Greenville-Spartanburg 36th largest TV market in US)

Might be a good idea to consider why people watch

certain teams play games.
Ask yourself this: which would draw a bigger national audience: Clemson vs UGA...or UNC vs UGA. The answer rejects your supposition point blank.
Now, the SEC may indeed consider UNC for its market. But you do actually believe they will sit still and allow B1G teams to be playing sports throughout the year right in the SEC's own backyard at Clemson? Thinking so is foolhardy at best, my friend.

“Footprint” means absolutely nothing. A team could be in Podunk South Dakota, but if people watch them on TV that’s what matters. Likewise a team can be on NY and nobody watches them.
Sure do wish this was common knowledge. So many poor takes on “market”.

It is eyeballs and not markets, but there is no question that UNC brings a ton of eyeballs from the State of North Carolina and across the nation itself. Charlotte is a UNC town. The Triangle is obviously UNC. Add that to major markets and you can see the desire to have it. If UNC was any good at football, it would be worth many times more. Clemson's brand is pretty strong too.

In today's TV market people watch from anywhere. It's like pro-football. I have a friend whose whole family is Seahawks fans even though none of them have ever been to the state of Washington let alone Seattle. College is not much different. I grew up in New England, but we watched college football from the south or the B1G. UNC has a low viewership rating overall and that might be the deciding factor. The idea of a B1G or and SEC team in NC is not a bad observation though because there is a real opportunity for market growth if they do well.

No. It wouldn't. The difference in the number of households that carry the SEC or Big 10 network, compared to the ACC network, is roughly 2 million households. These conference networks are, for the most part, already bundled together, so if you're getting one, you're probably be getting the others too. They would like a foothold in NC, but it's not because of markets, and hasn't been for almost a decade at this point with most going DTC and carriage fees dropping.
