RPO game

One thing I think I noticed yesterday is that Clemson used far less of the RPO game. The RPO (Run Pass Option) allows the QB to read a defender (a DE usually) and make a decision on whether to give to a RB, keep it, or pass. If it all works correctly, you should have an advantage in numbers. But Clemson has had issues for a long time now - the QB would make the wrong read, the RB would make the wrong read, the receiver would, an OL would not block correctly - and that's been the issue, they've simply never gotten all 11 on the same page.
So, at least on the surface, it looks like they backed off as many RPO's and just let the players play. I will ask Coach Swinney tonight and see what he says

I applaud the departure from it as it wasn’t working. Cade really needs to add strength to be an effective runner anyway unless he has a huge hole.

Something is different for the last two games. Spending that much time reading defenses when they change before you snap the ball does not make much sense.

And Dabo pretty much told him he doesn’t know what he’s talking about. Said we ran a bunch of RPOs against GT, but ran them so smoothly you just couldn’t tell.
Take it as you will.

No doubt. The biggest difference is in the blocking. If you’re gonna run block then run block. If you’re gonna pass block then pass block. That RPO half blocking half ending up downfield when you throw robs linemen of aggression I believe.

I noticed that as well and do think Cade is better with less critical decision points. Let’s keep that going. And - let’s scrap our new RPO play (Run Punt Option)! Burn that playsheet.

One has to wonder what would have been if we'd stopped it last year. Perhaps certain coach(s) from outside circle had an honest conversation with Dabo.

It took far too long to realize we were terrible at executing the RPO. It never worked for us. Very thankful we’re finally trashing it. We’re much better without it.

I'd still like to keep some zone reads to keep the defense on their toes. That way it's still just straight up run blocking and not the half run half pass blocking crap

No expert here, but it does seem like we’re having to dumb ourselves down to match our current talent and ability. That RPO can be extremely effective if run properly. Remember Connor Shaw carving us up in 2012? Maybe we have to give it up for now, but if Cade can put on some weight and strength, there’s a place for it, IMO.

Agreed! I noticed this as well and hope we continue to move away from RPO gameplan with the current offensive unit ....It can be very effective if run right but it all hinges on QB play and the last time I recall having a QB running it the way it's supposed to be run was DW4

It was the beginning of the real end inside the 5 against Syracuse last year.
Stubborn Dabo certainly takes a while to come around to facts, it seems.

And don’t this before Miami.
Not being able to score on a bad Wake team should have led to more changes like ‘less RPO’..but it seems we were convinced that we would go on the road to Miami & NCSU and win by doing the same thing. Glad that we have come around…but we had no business losing at Miami…and at NCSU for that matter. Here’s to a good finish!

My money is Cades injury is still bugging him so they don't want him to tweak it worse trying to run an Rpo.

I’m glad we rehired Dabo to fix the issues.
He’s mad and determined now to win another Championship.
It will take a deep healthy team to win a Championship under the new playoff format,
Our secondary looks incredible, a couple really nice WR”s and the number 1 LB, look 👀 out.

Just let Cade throw and hand the ball off, he seems far more comfortable doing that. He can still create with his legs if we get off-schedule, but it's obvious that the RPO was hindering his ability to produce out there.

Been saying that since the Dook game....for whatever reason, Cade can't run the RPO correctly. O Line and RB's can't either. Hence the fumbles/bad exchanges, missed blocking assignments, etc. It's been hard to watch.

Well the RPO game plan was a Tony Elliot thing I believe, and if Garrett is going to be our OC, he should be the OC and not care any about how TE done things regardless, and just be himself playing the game his way. I think the RPO game plan has hung around bc that what Dabo understood better....

Thank goodness! A lot of issues over the last few years seemed to stem from RPO. DW4 and TL16 seemed almost always to make the exact right decision, or at least could make a misread a not-so-bad play. DJU and Klubnik, not so much.
But I really thought that the RPO made the O-line indecisive and soft, especially since they never really knew if the play behind them was going to turn into a run or pass. If you played run and pancaked someone, then might get called for being downfield if it was actually a pass. If you played pass and it was a run, you failed to make a hole.
I prefer seeing all 11 players being on the same page from the start.

need some RPO in this offense, has been a clemson staple for years, but we are just gonna have to learn how to do it before we continue to do it, only to have costly turnovers and stalled drives because of it

IMO, when the OL knows it's a pass or a run, they can block better. Trying to block for what could be a run or could maybe be a pass limits them. Now they can pass block or be bulldozers on the run and who cares how far down the field they go.
We all (well most of us anyway) had to crawl before we could walk.

But apparently. All most of the fans on here know is that first downs are good and touchdowns are even better.

We did abandon it with DJ because DJ bless his heart was much worse than Cade at the RPO.
Deshaun & Trevor thrived with it because they had Renfrow on 3rd down and really good WR’s. If our DL was stronger in 2019 we would have another National Championship too!

The RPO only works once the run is established. If the run is working well, then don't have to pass but enough to keep Defense honest. I am becoming a fan of the Mike BoBo smash you offense and less a fan of motion and misdirection. It has its place, but shouldn't be your base b
