Bama boosters suddenly cancel all NIL contracts when Saban retired? It seems like they are setting Coach Deboer up for a certain fail, just from attrition alone.
If I were a player on Bama's roster, this would have been my thought process:
1) Coach Saban is gone as coach, but obviously believes in the new guy, he and Mrs. Terri were front and center at the introductory presser.
2) This coach just took his team, which most would argue was not nearly as athletically talented as Bama, to the National Title Game. Which, by the way, is one step farther than Coach Saban was able to take this group this year.
3) So, assuming I do NOT just want to be a straight up mercenary, and the NIL money did NOT change from what it was, why don't I stick it out here, for at least one year, and give the new guy a chance to succeed?
But, apparently, what has happened is that someone has gotten in these kids ears and proclaimed that "If you hit the free market, your value will be off the charts, and you should go for that!"
Someone on Coot radio, which I was listening to this morning on my way back home from a blood draw, actually made sense about this. He said, "Bama fans actually thought they were raking in all these recruits because Bama was such a proud brand, and ANYBODY would be lucky to play for them. But, what was REALLY happening is, they were coming to play for NICK SABAN, who just happened to BE at Alabama. Now that he is gone, Bama is just another school in the SEC." Or something to that effect, which really does seem to be the case.
One defection in particular has struck a nerve with the Bama un-faithful. Isaiah Bond, who caught the miracle 4th down pass in the Iron Bowl to keep Bama's season alive, has not only hit the transfer portal, but new rumor has it he is transferring to...AUBURN! (Right now, the Portal shows him crystal balling to Texas, which is now STILL in the SEC, but not the dagger in the heart that AUBURN would be.)
If this keeps up, Bama is going to be in similar shape numbers wise to Colorado at one point. But, the difference is, Neon Deion himself ran most of those off as not being good enough. I sincerely doubt that is the case at Bama. If it were, these kids would not be finding new homes almost before they even hit the portal. It's almost like they knew where they were going in advance of getting in the portal, which we all know couldn't be the case, because that would be TAMPERING, and TAMPERING is ILLEGAL.

There is a lot going on right now. The portal and NIL are only two reason “things have changed” … added top of the coaching changes …

Just look at what Dan Devine did to Rudy when Ara Parseghian left ND. Rudy and the rest should have hit the portal and saved them from having to deal with that a$$hole...

From 1983 to 2006, bama won 3 conference titles and 1 national title. Saban from 2007 until 2024.... 7 conference titles and 6 Nattys.
I'd say the players probably went there because of Saban.

I think it goes to show that players were going to play for Saban, not for Bama. The dynasty was always the Nick Saban dynasty, not the Alabama dynasty. NIL or not, Saban could sell these players on coming to play for him and practicing every week against NFL talent and being coached in a way that would put them on their best path to the NFL.
Now that all of that is gone they can either:
A) Stick it out and hope the new guy will get me there
B) Leave and either auction their services off to the highest bidder or program they think can get them to the next level.

and was relying on the Saban mystique to recruit. Now that he's gone, they're just another SEC team (albeit one with a winning tradition).

A number of those players were in Saban's office 24 hours after season end asking for more $$$. Some already had better deals in place from other schools before the season ended. That is tampering, but who cares at this point. Only mensa candidate schools like FSU get caught because of their shoddy protocol. Even if you are caught, who cares. The penalties don't measure up to the potential gain.

Their coach (CFB goat) retired… the grass does look greener elsewhere, especially with other teams circling like buzzards with wads of money…
