We need a few “red marks” on the board to help me settle a bit . . . Looking for Chloe, Sidney and Melena to find one soon! God Bless You Annabelle!!!

I’m interested in how we play the short Par 3, 8th Hole today . . . Everyone love a 100 yd approach shot . . . Right???
On Day 1, we played it @ -1 (1 Birdie, 4 Pars)
Day 2 @ Even Par (5 Pars)
Day 3 @ +3 (3 Bogeys, 2 Pars)

Come on TIGERS . . . Settle in and play to your potential . . . Please???

We must play better . . . Quickly!!!

We can afford a couple of +2 or +3 Rounds . . . but +5 through 9 Holes and +7 through 8 Holes is using up ALL of the cushion we had built.

Come On TIGERS . . . Focus! We are not a “Given” to make the Top 8 today . . . We must EARN it.

Started the day thinking third was a reasonable best case scenario.
Now holding 4th or just dropping to 5th is good. Avoid the top three in the quarters.

Definitely need some red boxes. Yellow would be nice, but those seem to be rare.

All of our women are now through the front 9. We shot +9 which isn't great but we are still tied for 5th and have a 9 shot lead over the 9th place team. I'm hoping we can get a few shots back on the back 9. Annabelle played great at -2 on the front, currently T4 in the individual tournament.

Chloe and Melena were just dreadful and need to stop the bleeding. I was hoping we would build some kind of momentum for the match play round, but all of those bogies (and more) can't be helping anyone's confidence. Hopefully, they can at least stop the bleeding on the inward nine.

We seem to be settling in a bit. Only +2 so far on the back. Annabelle and Isabella are carrying us so far. Each of them have 3 birdees and no one else has any birdees to this point. I'm hoping this is just a case of last round nerves and we can relax and just play our best in match play (assuming our spot in the Top 8 is realized).

Yes they were playing with house money after Round 1, but they have not played well as a team after that. Course got tougher as tourney went on, but putting up under-par rounds wasn't an impossibility. Wonder how much of it is mental.

Right now Annabelle is in good position for an A-A finish (best of my understanding, Top 15 individual finish garners that honor).

Hopefully the girls can get right mentally if they hang on b/c after today the mindset changes. Spend 4 days trying to outlast 22 other teams in stroke play, then have to flip gears to match play & trying to be better than the player the other team lines up against you - with the ultimate team goal hanging in the balance.

It feels like we came into the day just trying to hold on to our position. Not sure we had the right mindset or the nerves got us. Watch where WF or Arkansas finishes because we probably have to be 1 stroke ahead of that to hold on to 8th.

It looks like Wake is done at +22 which is tied for 9th. We can't give up more than 3 more shots or potentially risk a playoff for the last spot. Arkansas still has some holes to go and could pass Wake and make it even tougher for us.

This was what I was hoping we could avoid...

The chasers (Auburn, Oregon,Arky) finishing on the front nine.

A very tense route to an excellent result. Started 4th and moving to 3rd looked unlikely early.
Finishing 4 or 5 was a good end (4 plays 5 tomorrow).
Take the ugly route to a good result. MANY teams would trade places.

Clemson avoids the top 3 that have been the most consistent.

Who has see highs and lows? - Clemson and USC, the 4/5 matchup

Clemson 280, 293, 293, 304
USC 299, 283, 296, 287

Which team will bring their best game to the quarterfinals?

While I am sure the numbers back them up, the Golf Channel repeatedly mentioned that finishing on the back nine (16-18) was harder than finishing on the front nine (7-9).

Clemson did not go by the numbers.
+7 on 7-9
+1 on 16-18 when the fight for seeding and staying in the top 8 was at a peak. They earned the #5 spot on the hardest holes.

Thank you skeeta56 and everyone else for the wonderful posts.

A couple thoughts. One, if coach Hester doesn't win coach of the year, then no-one else should. As skeeta56 and others pointed out, she lost her best player halfway through the season. She's had to mix up the lineup which is difficult because everyone wants to play. She also lost her trusted assistant and friend unexpectedly halfway through.

Second, we're still a relatively young team, less Annabelle. They haven't played in this kind of pressure. Yes, Annabelle has been in the national spotlight her entire career. She and Grewal played in pro tournaments.

The other 4 ladies, with the exception of some conference media and acc broadcasts, have never played in a tournament with galleries, with cameramen walking behind them.

It's a different animal when you look up at golf Channel towers and personalities you've only watched on TV. That said, I don't think the team choked at all. Just the opposite. If my heart was racing 160 beats, then what was there's doing. I'd get nervous playing in my country club tournament.

So, yes, we're all super proud of these young ladies and their historic accomplishments forever etched in Clemson lore.

Great post. Before the tournament started I said all I want is to get to match play and we certainly did that. All of these girls have played in a lot of tournaments fron the time they were very young, but like all golfers nerves, patience, and concentration can get shaky. But they did what they had to do. I think a sigh of relief and a reset will give them a boost in match play, so I am not going to be surprised at more success.

Thanks tigerlinks. I think you hit it on the nail. They can sit back, celebrate with family and team, and reset. A lot of pressure off because you jerk one in the pond off the tee, no big deal, just one hole.

Imo, all the pressure shifts to usc. Melena can be a dog in matchplay. So can Isabella.

Not gonna lie...that was not a fun round to follow. Have to imagine that if an earthquake leveled this course, alot of the players & coaches out there this weekend probably wouldn't shed too many tears. It flat out humbled several teams & nobody escaped unscathed.

But, our girls managed to survive and advance - they now find themselves as the ACC's lone contender among a final 8 w/ multiple SEC & P12 schools. As I said in an earlier post, now it's a different mindset - not just with match play, but with what's at stake. Hopefully our coaches & players can get their mindsets right & go shock the world the next 2 days.

Congrats to Annabelle Pancake for finishing 7th in the individual race & as only 1 of 9 players to finish stroke play under par. Her performance (from what I've been able to read up on) should give her All-American honors for the season

I have played at LaCosta and am pretty sure the course they are playing is the one I played. It had just been renovated before I played it, about seven or eight years ago, but has since been renovated by Gil Hanse. I did not much like the course when I played it and even watching yesterday did not give me much of a feel for it, except I think it sets up better for match play than medal play, as single bad holes will not kill you. If you noticed on our gal's cards, there were way too many blue and black squares. In match play they are no worse than a par if the opponent makes birdie, as you merely just lose the hole. I feel good about today, but regardless I could not be prouder than what this team has accomplished!
