So what your saying is over the past 10 years, Clemson has been a very average team in the ACC. More NCAA tournament appearances would help the perception of our basketball program. Go Tigers!!! Beat Arizona!!!

Genuinely curious in what context you’re administering iq tests since they’ve been completely purged from public education. Of the insane number of standardized tests my children have taken not a single one, even the ones for admission to gifted and talented programs, qualify as iq tests. The definition is “moderate or low quality.” Thats a wide range but certainly includes average. I wouldn’t opt to use the term when talking to a parent though.

Prior to the NCAAT, I had looked up the expenditures of teams ranked ahead of Clemson in the NET rankings (at the time). The first number here is the ranking by expenditures, ALL of the teams listed were ranked ahead of Clemson in NET at the time.

Sweet 16 participants:
3 Duke University ACC $14,492,257 5 University of Arizona Pac 12 $13,261,874 9 Marquette University Big East $11,457,181 21 The University of Tennessee-Knoxville SEC $9,674,480 23 Gonzaga University WCC $9,105,908 25 University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Big Ten $8,983,663 31 The University of Alabama SEC $8,387,815 34 University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill ACC $8,116,597 42 University of Connecticut Big East $7,582,613 43 North Carolina State University at Raleigh ACC $7,579,872 47 University of Houston American $7,460,535 52 Creighton University Big East $7,066,546 60 Purdue University-Main Campus Big Ten $6,605,655 68 Clemson University ACC $6,274,665 71 Iowa State University Big 12 $6,125,139 92 San Diego State University Mountain West $4,256,831
I wouldn't mind paying the coaches staff more, maybe even a lot more. But I would NEVER support paying them more unless a majority of the pay was incentive-based and not just baseline pay no matter what the record ends up being.
Something like this for HC salary seems more than fair.
* $100k for each ACC home win * $150k for each ACC road win (include ACC tournament wins) * $50k for each non-conference win * $25k bonus for each win over team ranked at the time of the win * $25k penalty for Quad 4 loss * $50k bonus for in-season tournament championship * $100k bonus if team is ranked in AP top 25 at the end of the season * $25k for each scholarship athlete graduated * $250k bonus for ACC regular season championship * $750k bonus for ACC tournament championship * $250k bonus for NCAA appearance, and for each NCAA tournament game won * $25k bonus for NIT appearance, and for each NIT game won * $1M bonus for NCAA Final Four appearance

I wouldn't put any stock in that link. Judge Keller posted today that basketball at Clemson is profitable which is untrue. It lost over 2 million in 2021-22 and 4 million in 22-23. We had operating expenses in basketball in 2022-23 of $15,626,778. That's dramatically higher than is typically alleged on this site. And that isn't taken from some rando site that is publishing unaligned, not standardized data. That's from Clemson's actual financials available here.
https://media.clemson.edu/finance/controller/annualreports/fy23-acfr.pdf
A quick perusal of a couple years data should show you why third party websites are unreliable. Clemson made a major change in its revenue reporting from '22 to '23. It's showing football and basketball with net operating losses last year. But that's because all media rights revenue was shifted to "non-program specific" whereas it had previously been divided between football and basketball. Now factor all the areas that can be calculated differently between schools. Determine capital expenses and whether they are reflected in these summaries. Does the school have a booster organization? How are those financials reflected. Clemson and IPTAY maintain a very different financial relationship than USCar and Gamecock Club.
You could pull up each schools data but I think you would quickly realize you can't make heads or tails of what most schools are doing. Clemson's reports are unusualy detailed and easy to understand. Pull up NC State's and basically the entire athletic department is a single line item.
In some schools that I have dug into, the major differences come down to coaching salary plus severances. Brad has worked his way to the 3rd highest base salary in the ACC. His total compensation often falls further down because of lack of incentives. Regardless his salary is very much in line with the 2 of the other 3 coaches from the ACC in the Sweet Sixteen. Only Jon Scheyer is reported to make significantly more but Duke doesn't actually share their budgets. I've seen reports that they pay him $9 million, but it makes no sense that they would pay him that much right out of the gate.

As a 60 year fan I'll take the Sweet 16 & pretty decent coach. I really like the players they've been getting and think this team might still be on the verge of playing their best game of the year.

If we have a losing season next year, will people argue "But we made the Sweet 16 last year, give him a pass." How long should that last?
Frank Martin was fired a few years after a Final Four! His teams had struggled, but he got up to having 2 consecutive winning seasons with 25 and 26 wins, made the Final Four. Things looked bright! Those first few years were erased from the memory banks. But following the Final Four, SCARs record was no so good:
17–16 16-16 18-13 6-15 (COVID) 18-13
Even SCAR had had enough. "Following the run to the Final Four, the Gamecocks failed to reach postseason play in Martin's remaining tenure. Martin was dismissed as the head coach of South Carolina on March 14, 2022.[10] At the time of his dismissal, he was the third winningest coach at South Carolina with a 171–147 (79–99 SEC) record."
Let's all hope that A) Brownell can actually take the team to a Final Four this year and B) the program does not fall off like it did the *last* time Brownell had success in the NCAAT. I do not relish more 16-15 and 17-16 seasons before he blips toward the positive again.

I think those are things that can, and should, be addressed in any contract extension. If we want and desire long term success, we should have a contract that addresses both the University's and it's designee's commitment and expectations as to what is the desired outcome.
People have whined and complained when I have said this, but Clemson needs to make sure it's needs are met in this document and eliminate all ambiguity.
Schools are investing millions of dollars into basketball and prioritizing it as a sport, as shown above. We continue to support a University that refuses to be serious about sports not named football and apparently also has an online fanbase not able to use any problem solving or critical thinking - just scream "fire coach" whenever it doesn't look good. Time to take the bull by the horns and make our needs known.
If we don't do it correctly, we only have ourselves to blame.

I haven't so much whined about it as I feel like it is just a deflection. I would love to read of a contract that say's you get "x" million per year with a heavy emphasis on bonuses for conference regular season championships, conference tournament championships, making the Final Four, and winning a National Title. Incentivizing anything below that significantly is ridiculous though we currently do it. I'd love a non-traditional buyout arrangement. Make the contract fully guaranteed with an automatic one year rollover. But have a clause that says any two year period with on postseason, any three year period without an NCAA appearance, or any 4 year period with failure to advance in the NCAA tournament triggers an option to dismiss with 1 year salary. But no coach or agent is gonna sign something like that.

Whining may have been a poor use of words. I'm not going to be the judge regarding any whining you have done over the year(s).
I personally just don't think many of the haters on here realistically thought he could pull it off and were hoping for some kind of Cliff Ellis 91-94 type of conference finish. I think that changed course with the #3 UNC road win. The team did it, despite the "fire brad" club and still have a shot at something even more. It would be special.
Asking for the sweet 16 every season may be a statistical dream. Kinda like asking the Baseball team to get to a super regional every year, but yes, I think Clemson can turn this into a win-win for basketball's long term outlook through a well negotiated contract extension.
But I expect some will still keep the strife going even during a successful season.

At the end of Week 9 we were the 1 team in the country by RPI and number 8 by NET. We had already beaten 5 eventual NCAA tourney teams. Why shouldn't we have believed? I know why most didn't, but I also know we proved we have the talent to beat anyone this season.

So, we weren’t the number 8 team in NET and number 1 team in RPI? You pretend to want better discourse on this site and turn around and engage in this kind of snark. Through the non-conference slate Clemson asserted itself as a potential 2 seed in the tournament and as a top 10 team by every metric. You also mocked my entirely fact based analysis that Brad performs erratically and loses when he shouldn’t more than his peers. But what turned around and happened? He entered conference play against a conference that had overall played terribly the previous two months and managed to lose games he shouldn’t have. You’re working this out both sides of your mouth so I’ll assume for here on out your just here to troll.

How do you possibly think this helps make your case. It’s dated March 2. Judge Keller is talking about how terrible Earl Grant and Mike Young are and Brownell turns around and loses to them in back to back games one week later. Enjoy your trolling coot. You obviously don’t know crap about basketball and obviously are only here to stir up ####.

I've said since at least December that he is almost certain to be back. I haven't actually called for him to be fired. I hope his contract is negotiated sensibly and with a broader view than just having made it to the Sweet Sixteen. He made it six years ago and has a single first exit between now and then.

I've said since December it would take a calamity to keep Clemson out of the tourney and therefore Brad would almost certainly be returning as coach. I'm posting these numbers as reaction to certain posters acting like making the Sweet 16 twice in the last decade is a miracle. You should expect that and more after investing what we have. Can Neff resist the temptation to overdo it in dealing with Brad. Can Brad actually make a back to back tournament next. It would be a supreme challenge. He'll probably have the lowest percentage of returning offense next year of his career. If he can navigate around that then #### Me, maybe he really is built for the transfer portal era. But if he relies on transfers and veterans completely and runs off his recruits and starts another 4 years to make the tourney cycle I'd hope we'd have the leeway to move on.

Over the longer haul we have been at the bottom of the ACC so this shows real improvement during CBB’s tenure. I hope JK passes this to CBB so he can show Neff to justify an even longer extension

There is no longer haul that includes these 15 teams. If you go by NCAA appearances, we're only ahead of GT (who we have a winning record against) and WF. By post season appearances those are also the only original ACC teams behind us. Would you like to take another stab at it?
FYI - it's completely disingenuous responses like this that keep me going. You'd be better saying nothing that worsening the situation by offering some so easily disprovable.

I think its the keeping strife going despite a successful season. Your words to JK a few weeks ago. At least that would be my take.

Misrepresenting the stats to pump the coach rather than the team is keeping the strife going. There are two sides and you and geech have proven time and time again which side your playing for.

It’s literally a list of facts presented without editorial. If that threatens you, that’s on you. You and your fellow Bros could just let it go. But can’t have anything that can even be construed as negative to Dear Leader even as your own spread completely false info. You need deprogramming.

I would say that this Clemson team has put itself in the position to have an amazing run. But some of us want to attend a Final Four before they die.

Yes, the ones with ambitions are the ones toxic towards the program not the ones who think 14 years of participation ribbons deserves the 3rd best salary in the conference because poor, pitiful, widdle Clemson could never be better.

Why are people doing this the week of the Sweet 16? I'm all for a new coach whenever it happens, this team is headed to the Sweet 16 for just the fifth time in the program's history. Now is not the time for this stuff.

Now go look at those programs history since 1980 up until 2013.
See where those University's basketball programs were in terms of the same metrics.
Or at least compare Clemson pre BB vs post BB.
If you do not like BB, so be it. But you cannot say this year his basketball program did not succeed above the norm for Clemson.
