Got word late last night that I had lost a good friend and member of my

wife's family. Doc was my dentist growing up, and later on became a very good friend and golfing buddy. It was at his house after a day of golf that I discovered via old Super 8 movies that his wife had a nice, unmarried female first cousin, who just happened to be a couple of years younger than me. Introductions were made, and less than two months later, we had already decided to get married. (Although her mother resisted for awhile, and it was actually eight months before we DID get married.)
That was 38 years and two children ago, and we are still going strong. As I told Doc and his wife at family get togethers, if it had not been for them, I would not have MY family.
Doc suffered at the end of his life with dementia, as well as heart issues, and his time in hospice was relatively short, less than a week after he was put in hospice care. He is in a much better place now.
Hit 'em long and straight again, Doc. I'll rejoin you at some point down the road.
Please pray for his wife, three sons, and all the grandchildren that are grieving right now. They were, and will continue to be, a very close family.

One of my fondest golfing memories is of Doc and another couple of friends

playing along with me at our home course, for DIMES. I played for money at other times, with other people, but that particular group were just all good friends in addition to being all good golfers, as we all shot mid-70s at the time, and we were all playing well that day. We didn't even keep a running score, just by holes. I bet we passed the same dime back and forth between us all day long. Good play by one inspired good play by the rest. You know the kind of day I am talking about if you ever golfed. Others may call it being "in the zone". We hated to see the sun go down that day. I think another of us, who was the best golfer (A 2 to 3 handicapper), wound up with the dime at the end of the day, but who really cared? It was all about the fun, the companionship of good friends, and a day well spent.

Loosing good friends like that is hard. I lost one of my longtime scuba buddies a week ago. We owned a boat together and had quite a few adventures. Remember the good times and keep your memory of him alive. My prayers for his family and friends.

and when you are used to calling someone everytime Clemson has something Good Or Bad happen...it is a while before you stop reaching for the phone when a new event occurs...And, like you, happenstance helped me snag Mrs. Spud. I was out with my Coot Running Buddy (but not the asphalt kind of running buddy) and we were on the way out the door of Tramps in Greenville when a fraternity brother,Grant Calhoun grabbed me and said he wanted to introduce me to a girl he had been dating. My buddy,Jim Watson, said,"Come on Black! Let's go!". I said,"Jim, 1 minute.....One MINUTE...". And I walked over and Grant introduced me to the prettiest little Ware Shoals Hornet in blue jeans,a vest, and off white cowboy boots...Miss Betty Anne Dodson....and I immediately said,"Betty Anne, would you like a beer?...", and she said,"Sure"..and I said,"Grant...go get Betty Anne a Beer!"...and HE DID...and I immediately...EEEMMMEEEEDEEE UUUUHT LEEE!!! Said," BA...you wanna shag".....7 Months later we were engaged....Yesterday was our 41st anniversary.....
Young tnetters...Carpe Diem!!!!!
