If I had that much money, you wouldn’t catch me posting in here. I’d be out there popping bottles, golfing at some fancy private club, and letting the ladies take their best shot at getting me to settle down.

That’s what my gramps always said.
My father just bought a brand new truck, he has been driving the same F350 diesel since 1999. MFer has 350k miles on it. I told him the same thing, “can’t take it with you”. Glad he has a sweet ride for the rest of his life.
Keeping the diesel at the lake and it’s still a dang nice truck. Prob can go 500k easy with the maintenance he always had done. Dual cab, full bed. Runs like a dime.

My retirement account is about 10% of my portfolio. I am trying to build a portfolio that has houses around the world... thats my goal. Will I hit it... dont know. It will be a fun pursuit though. It will be nice to go visit different places, see different cultures, see different climates/regions. That is what I want my retirement portfolio to look like. And, to me, it is going to be much more fun than putting money in an account.

Let us cosplay this fantasy a bit too. Sounds intriguing.
I almost talked a buddy into splitting a house in Aruba, Portugal and U.S. with me, and our families would just rotate thru the 3 houses at different times.

One in Mars Hill, one in Franklin NC. The next options that are on a the docket: Montenegro, Spain, Jackson Hole, vineyard in western NC, tropics somewhere between St. Barts and Montserrat. After discussing with the wife, we agreed on the house in the tropics. It will do a couple of things; one, it will be different than the mountain setting. Two, it will be an international property that is fairly close by.
I have family that moved to Nepal that we would like to go visit. I would love to be able to hop to them by hitting Spain, then Montenegro. But I havent done an international property yet, so having something a little more accessible would be ideal.
The vineyard will be a longer and greater investment... it takes several years before it produces. I would like to build an event hall looking over the vineyard for weddings and, well, events. Then also have several houses/cabins around it for people to stay in.
Thats why those two got moved down the list.

We do have a friend who is a realtor there so he could get us a heads up on whats available and whats good. It is funny when doing searches in different areas and setting prices at about a 2 million dollar max. Tropical islands... 4-6 bedrooms, 4000 sqft villa, Wears Valleyish area... 4-5 bedroom 3200 sqft house, Jackson Hole... 2-3 bedrooms, 1200 sqft run down condo.

Not gonna lie, you are the prime reason Teton County is unsustainable

I got friends who live there, well, outside Teton County in a rental in Hoback, their rent is about 30% of what it could be, the homeowner just doesn't need the money and rents it cheap because he likes them. If he dies and his family inherit his properties, they will be out.
Anyways, the market there is ridiculous because EVERYTHING is an AirBnB, mostly owned by people who live outside the US. Locals would HATE you for buying the "cheapest" thing you could get and then renting it out for profit. It is a good business, but it ruins communities like that for locals.
Vail, Aspen, Telluride, JHole, all are the same way. Teton County might be the worst though.

One of the things I talked about that I enjoy is the culture of different places (yes, even within the US). I was reading about someone who bought a property in an Italian town (not touristy) and then tried to advertise it like crazy and buy more property there. Like you said, probably really profitable, but the locals hated them. Eventually, the locals wouldnt do anything for them, so they had to try to get building supplies from out of town, management from out of town... it became unsustainable for them and they moved.
I dont really want that... I want it to be more integrated into the community... that is what a lot of the draw is.
Unfortunately, all desirable areas are becoming like that. Even upstate SC is like that. House prices have doubled in just a couple of years. Or, look at IE. Houses that were 500k where he is at are now 2 mil.

Always interesting the different ways people make/save money. All my leftover money goes into stock market. No real estate besides primary home.
Temporarily owned condos in Charlotte and Myrtle, and a vacation house near Fripp 15-years ago, but rental income didn't cover carrying costs and sold all at a loss before real estate went haywire.
Whereas 10-years ago I should have bought every piece of property I could find in Mt Pleasant.

which is now in 18 years. DOH!
But It would be neat to have the different properties and which ever one is not booked, just go stay there for a certain time. Or, like if some of them are seasonal, stay in them during the off season. But, ultimately I would like to have land and be able to be at least partially self sustaining. Either option would be fun.

I don’t mean to brag but I currently have a three bedroom apartment and only one roommate. No taxes, self-insure, and upgraded this spring to a view of an undeveloped lot instead of the parking lot.
Next time you have to unclog a toilet remember that FastChad just calls the landlord and makes him run the snake.
