118 - Houston Oilers Select Pat Crain with Pick 118 of 1964 AFL Draft

At Clemson:

For decades, FB Pat Crain (1962-1964) held a unique distinction at Clemson. According to Wikipedia:

“Some highlights of Crain's career include being selected to the 1963 all ACC team and being the only player in Clemson history to record a reception and an interception in a game until Justin Miller did it in 2002.”

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pat_Crain

According to Sports-Reference.com, Crain registered the following stats at Clemson:

- 339 Carries for 1191 Yards (3.5 Average)
- 10 Rushing Touchdowns
- 3 Receptions for 28 Yards (9.3 Average)

https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/players/pat-crain-1.html

In the 1960s the fullback position was used very differently than it is today. Staying with Sports-Reference.com:

- Crain’s 348 yards led Clemson in rushing in 1962

https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/schools/clemson/1962.html

- Crain’s 513 yards led Clemson in rushing in 1963

https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/schools/clemson/1963.html

- Crain’s 330 yards led Clemson in rushing in 1964

https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/schools/clemson/1964.html

Perhaps some of you young folks might not be overly familiar with newspapers, but there was a time when a printed newspaper was an important source of information. Here is a copy of the Greenville News from November 6, 1963:

https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-greenville-news-pat-crain-likes-foot/121797459/

After Clemson:

Crain was drafted by the Houston Oilers AND by the Chicago Bears in 1964. The Houston Oilers selected Pat Crain with the 118th pick (15th Round) of the 1964 AFL Draft. The Chicago Bears then selected Pat Carin with the 23rd pick (2nd Round) of the 1964 NFL Draft. Perhaps, the AFL teams thought he was planning to sign only with an NFL team.

I was not able to find a record of his playing in either league, however. Nor was I able to find information on what Crain did after his playing days ended. If anyone has any info it would be greatly appreciated!

Before Clemson:

In Summer 2017, OL Jordan McFadden announced his commitment in style … to Virginia Tech. According to GoUpstate.com:

“Jordan McFadden had a pool party back in the summer to announce his commitment to Virginia Tech.

When it came time to dive in, McFadden made his splash with Clemson.

Dorman’s Shrine Bowl offensive lineman switched his commitment earlier this month, and made his college choice official on Wednesday.

“If you had told me when I first started playing high school football that I’d be signing with Clemson, I wouldn’t have believed you at all,” he said. “I’m just blessed. Clemson is my dream school and I’m just really excited about it.”

Clemson Nation is very grateful that McFadden ultimately chose the Tigers!

At Clemson:

After redshirting in 2018, it did not take long for Jordan Mcfadden to become a mainstay on Clemson’s OL. According to excerpts from his bio on ClemsonTigers.com:

“Technician who became one of Clemson’s most respected team leaders by the end of his five-year career spanning the 2018-22 seasons … three-year starter who played 2,960 career snaps from scrimmage, the third-most of any offensive tackle in program history and the seventh-most of any Clemson player across all positions as of the conclusion of the 2022 season … two-time All-ACC honoree who started the final 39 of his 56 career games.

2022: Voted by his teammates as a permanent team captain … earned the Jacobs Blocking Trophy, presented to the top blocker in the ACC, Clemson’s 10th all-time selection for the award and its first since multi-time All-American Mitch Hyatt won the honor in consecutive years in 2017-18 … first-team All-ACC honoree … garnered first-team All-ACC honors from the AP and Phil Steele … second-team All-ACC selection by College Football Network … third-team All-ACC selection according to Pro Football Focus … started all 14 games for Clemson, and his 989 offensive snaps tied for the fourth-most by an offensive tackle in a season in program history

2021: Second-team All-ACC selection … also collected second-team all-conference honors from the AP, PFF and Phil Steele … played a team-high 872 offensive snaps over 13 games (all starts), finishing the year as one of only four Clemson offensive or defensive players to start every game … his 872 snaps were the most by a Clemson offensive tackle since 2016 (Mitch Hyatt, 994)

2020: Started all 12 games at right tackle, playing 767 snaps as Clemson led the ACC as the only team to allow fewer than two sacks per game … earned second-team All-ACC honors from PFF

2019: Played 315 snaps over 14 games

2018: Played 17 snaps in three games while redshirting”

After Clemson:

The Los Angeles Chargers selected Jordan McFadden with the 156th pick (5th Round) in the 2023 NFL Draft. Here are selected excerpts of how the Chargers introduced McFadden to their fans:

1. Veteran Experience

The Chargers are getting someone with tons of snaps under his belt along the line of scrimmage.

McFadden joins the Bolts as a three-year starter at Clemson, one of the most respected football programs in the country…

2. A Force in the ACC

McFadden was as sturdy as they came along the offensive line in the ACC.
He was awarded the Jacobs Blocking Trophy, presented to the top blocker in the ACC, in 2022 for his stellar season at left tackle. McFadden was also a First-Team All-ACC honoree in his final collegiate season…

3. Keeping the QB Clean

According to Pro Football Focus, McFadden allowed just two QB hits in his entire career (1,584 snaps).

He was also a force in the run game, amassing over 1,300 run blocking snaps in his career at Clemson.

4. Leadership Qualities

Perhaps one of McFadden's biggest skills isn't on the football field, as he was one of Clemson's team leaders in his time at the university.

In 2022, he was voted by his teammates as a permanent team captain as he was well-respected by the entire program.

5. Multi-Sport Athlete

McFadden played both football and basketball growing up and into high school. He was a three-year letterman in basketball at Dorman and was a part of the team that went on to win back-to-back regional championships.

Nice introduction indeed!

According to Pro-Football-Reference.com, McFadden played in 12 games as a rookie in 2023 for the Chargers. He started two of those games.

Well done, Mr. McFadden! Keep up the great work! Tiger Nation is behind you all the way!

Of Note:
Not every OL gets a 4+ minute highlight video. It really speaks to McFadden’s talents:
